Q: Why shouldn't we use the word 'here' in a textlink

Paul OlyslagerOver the years of surfing on the web I have found numerous examples of people telling to not use the word "here" in a textlink. Personally I like the idea of using the word, because it is so straightforward for your visitors to know where to click. The only reason that I can truly think of is fo...

here's something to keep in mind when writing questions and answers

11 hours later…

ghost town (-:

8:40 PM
here or in Albania? );

here (-:

Yes
it's really sad
I hope the chat activity will grow with the site

8:56 PM
it's always quiet on weekends though. so is linguistics.SE

yes thats true
usually I also don't have time during the weekends.... but this weekend I'm visiting my parents and there isn't a lot to do ;)
I just saw an interesting event is taking place in LaTeX.SE
it's called answer the unanswered. people are meeting in the chat and try to answer the still unanswered questions. maybe we should keep this in mind when the site is growing and we will have more unanswered question.

I think it is an interesting idea to add a lot of quality to the site.

latex is a foreign language to me

yes it has a steep learning curve
but i think this answer the unanswered event in the chat is a nice idea

9:12 PM
Can't believe I gave recommendations about how to drink. Talk about stereotypical Eastern European..

are you leaving there? in your profile or homepage I read you're from sweden

Yeah, I'm currently residing in Sweden, for the last few years. But I'm from Bulgaria

ah nice
i planned to go there this summer

Ah great!
What places are you going to visit?

i'm not yet sure. I hadn't time this summer because the trip through russia, the baltics and poland took to long, but I'll go there next summer. I'll definitively visit Sofia and the I plan to travel through the country to the Black Sea

9:23 PM
Ahh... The coast is great, but there are way too many tourist-y areas there. There are a few camping places which are nice, and a lot of young people are going there. But the main resorts.. I'd avoid them, you won't find them any different from similar places in Greece or Spain. Definitely go for the northern coast -- much less populated, and better places

I heard Varna is very touristic, but if possible I'll go there with our camper or by train and so we're flexible and can go to more remote and less touristic areas ;)
but when time comes I'll definitely ask here for more hints ;)

Absolutely, I'd be happy to help :)
and yes, Varna in the tourist season is kind of crowded, but is a good "starting base" for travelling around the northern coast coast.

and in sweden are you more in the southern part or really in the north?

I'm in the southern part of Sweden, in a smallish city called Jönköping. It's halfway between Copenhagen and Stockholm. So yeah, it's southern Sweden. Then again, I was shocked to discover that the northernmost towns (like Luleå) are almost as far from here as Bulgaria is :)

ah Jönköping... I was there two years ago.. drove their with my car
haha I can imagine
but for me all other countries are just huge :D im living in a very small one

9:34 PM
Yeah, it's a completely different perspective.. Before travelling more than 100 km seemed like a long way to go.. and now I routinely visit nearby cities two hours away by car, and don't think much of it

yes that true
it really depends on the perspetive

9:52 PM
BTW the "Answer the unanswered" session in TeX-SE is very helpful -- we're 20 questions down already for an hour or so since the beginning.

ah you're also active in the latex community? i never heard of such an event. do you know if it also takes place e.g. in SO?

no, as far as I know it's unique to TeX-SE (and yes, I'm active there as well)
The first session last month was a big success, and so it was decided this will take place every month in a weekend for half a day to clean up. Just a few months ago we were at 220+ unanswered questions, and growing, and now we're below 180. So I'd say it works pretty well
@hippietrail: Still in Albania?

yep in berat

What's there to do?

Q: Do native English speakers use the word "touristic"?

hippietrailA word usage that always annoys me and feels like Euroenglish to me is "touristic". I don't believe I've ever seen it printed or heard it used by a native English speaker and I've travelled in most of the English speaking countries and work in tourism. But it's very very common to hear "tourist...

bulgaria is great, varna is not

10:07 PM
True enough, if you have been there in the middle of the season
It's a great city to live in otherwise

in berat i can lie in bed playing with my laptop
sofia i loved even ruse was nice but varna and burgas no

You loved Sofia?! You're probably the first person I hear saying that :-)

actually berat is a beautiful historic unesco protected town. and it has a backpacker hostel
i heard people not like sofia and i don't know what they didn't like... lack of disneyland? (-:
two hours away by car is far? (-:
i've been to Jönköping by the way

Seems everybody has, at one point or another
"See Jönköping and die"

Maybe because it is on the route from copenhagen to stockholm :)

10:15 PM
Yeah, that helps also, doesn't it :)

that was my reason i think

have you ever been in liechtenstein?

i have been through lichtenstein on rollerblades
