Q: Even in the 1960s, was the UI/.computer systems of The Enterprise being criticized?

releseabeI am sure modern youngsters if they have the patience to watch STOS find the limitations of the Enterprise in some respects hilarious -- Yeoman Rand actually hands Kirk reports; the transporter seems to require manual intervention (how scary); Spock has to bend over a tiny view screen; etc. It se...

Q: Looking for a short story that involves two individuals on a different planet, they encounter a black cube(?), which has inhabitants inside

SacredAngelNot sure the specifics, but everything the title says has what I knew of the story. I think they took a peek into this black shape, and discovered there was things living inside, but they were doing something that made the two people repulse, not sure. It was written to be unnerving though.

Q: What is the significance of the pyramids?

AdamantIn 1899, a large gray-black pyramid appears in the simulations in various forms: as the first lock to escape the simulation, in a gigantic form outside Maura's father's office, and so forth. Perhaps the most interesting pyramid is the alchemical symbol for earth, 🜃, which appears in numerous pla...

Q: What 80s children’s fantasy movie has a scene with a court jester who snaps his fingers and disappears?

BobbyI’m looking for a children’s fantasy movie that I remember watching part of in the late 80s. The only scene I can remember features a kid and a magical court jester outside near a forest. I think the court jester tells him a riddle and then says something about being a fool and then snaps his fin...

@SQB I'd be willing to leave it open
@Slartibartfast @Michael I haven't had the pleasure of reading any of Greg Bears books, are there any particularly noteworthy ones you can think of?
Perhaps it would be worth adding them to the meta post?

Q: Looking for short story about AI being tested for going out of control

CoyktoA story that starts with scientists asking AI what is its name and it says something silly (like Sally, or something). They make a little laugh of this and proceed with some other questions. AI realises humans are disgusting and there is a way for it to get out of control and launch nukes or some...

@AncientSwordRage Difficult to narrow it down - I hadn't realised quite how prolific he was. Personally, Eon is a favourite for the world building and characterisation, but YMMV.
@Michael any of them worth adding to the post, when I check it looked like he wrote for some big SF franchises

Q: Given the immense speeds achieved even at impulse, how does human reaction time affect space battles?

releseabeI believe when the Enterprise is engaged against an enemy ship, both ships have to have dropped out of warp and operate at sub-light speeds. But this is still many kilometers per second. Does any canon or even non-canon story address how humans or humanoids are able to make the maneuvers and fire...

@SQB The question is really about a potential inspiration for an inspiration, so I'd rule it off-topic. Otherwise we end up allowing questions about bible stories...
@AncientSwordRage Blood Music is of course a classic, and Eon is also definitely notable. The Forge of God was also good. I don't clearly recall all the Queen of Angels series, but I do remember enjoying / (Slant). It's not all good though; I'd recommend skipping Dead Lines and Vitals.

The science fiction TV series Firefly, well known for its loyal-to-fanatic following among fans and for its early cancellation after a single season, has few enough episodes that it’s easy to watch and rewatch them all and to analyse and compare them individually. What follows is my very subjective opinion on ranking the episodes, from ... Read more

Q: Classic SF-Movie in which a man assembles a device from packages
