@Donald.McLean Ahoy! I loved the IR view of Jupiter. The detail is incredible, considering the distance it was shot from. (I.e. not as good as Galileo or Cassini, but a massive improvement from the Hubble shots of the Shoemaker-Levy impact.)
What's really interesting is the difference between the view at 2.12 microns (the photogenic one) and the one shot at 3.23 microns, which is basically just a blob: blogs.nasa.gov/webb/2022/07/14/…
To my layman's eye, it looks like the one at 2.12 microns is a combination of reflected sunlight and partially-transmitted internal heat: The bright regions in the North and South Equatorial Belts are concentrated towards the centre of Jupiter, so probably reflected sunlight, while the polar regions are uniformly bright, so more likely radiated heat.
Whereas the 3.23 micron image seems to be dominated by Jupiter's overall heat emissions.
@Donald.McLean That makes a lot of sense; Jupiter would be relatively hot compared to distant galaxies.
