@DavidW just had a thought about self-publishing. I don't think it's inherently bad, but its not 'mainstream' because if it was, it could have gone via a traditional publisher.
Because it's not mainstream it's hard to find/get hold of, so people are less picky
Sometimes that might mean lower quality but not always
Whereas traditional publishing never lets any non-mainstream through
@AncientSwordRage the thing is, at least in principle, one of the purposes of tradpub is to filter out stuff that is just badly written
It also filters out a bunch of stuff that's good, but not in that publisher's wheelhouse/budget/etc, or that they don't think is salable, or w/e
Selfpub lacks both of those filters, so it contains good stuff that tradpub is too shy to touch, but it also contains a lot of bad stuff that can't be traditionally published not because it's "not mainstream" but because it's just really bad
(and you do occasionally get non-mainstream tradpub stuff -- but big publishers are by their nature risk-averse, so you're more likely to see it coming from smaller indie outfits)
Tradpub is like a restaurant that only does one type of food but fairly well, and self-pub is a restaurant that has all sort son the menu; some good some bad.

Q: Old (pre-1970) novel with plot point about insufficient tech level to reproduce a broken gizmo

EthanI don't think this was really a big deal in the story, just some on-going issue the protagonist was dealing with while carrying on with whatever the major plot was. It stuck in my head for some reason. I think I read this before 1970. It could have been a fix-up novel from a series of short st...

Q: Are Omega and Boba genetic twins?

Peter NielsenBoba Fett and Omega are both unmodified clones of Jango Fett, it seems; does that mean that Boba and Omega are genetically identical? They definitely don't sound or look the same. Plus, Omega is female. Are they genetically identical? If not, what are the differences? (Obviously, a different gend...

Q: Looking for short story about scientist who goes into the past to change evolution

katI read this story when I was 10 and haven't stopped trying to find it, it may have been in an older anthology book. It may have been titled "The Lottery", and it was about a scientist sent to the very far past with a machine that gave out evolutionary lines to make extinct. The scientist was on a...

Can anyone suggest a "good" dragon book?
I need to think of a book for a reading group I go to, and we thought it would be nice to discuss a book about dragons that didn't start with a waif finding a dragon egg and bonding with the hatchling. So no McCaffrey or Paolini.
It would be nice to have a book that had something new and interesting to say about dragons, their role in the universe and the way they interact with humans. I feel as though I have read books like this so I'm off to riffle through my book collection, but if anyone can think of a good book of this type all suggestions will be gratefully received.

Q: Trantor’s population too low?

StephenSTrantor is stated to have a population of “forty billions”. I haven’t found any mention of Trantor’s surface area, but if we assume it is similar to Earth’s 510,065,623 km², then that means a mere 78 people per km², or less than one person per hectare. Even if we assume reasonable losses of land ...

Q: Trying to identify a period war movie that came out 10 to 20 years ago

Élio PereiraI remember watching a war movie 10 to 20 years ago, when I was a still teenager, with some noteworthy scenes. I would like to watch it again. However, I am not able to recall its name and I only remember a few scenes. The movie seemed to be about a war that happened between the Napoleonic Wars an...

@JohnRennie One of the series by Robin Hobb, The Rain Wild Chronicles, might fit. There is a lot about the interaction between dragons and humans though, with some chapters being from a dragon's point of view.
Possible problems with the suggestion are that it does start with a bunch of young outcasts bonding with a bunch of young dragons. Additionally, another one of her series, Liveship traders, gives a foundation for what is happening in Rain Wild Chronicles.

Q: A short story about (not) reading Shakespeare in class

AlfredI read this short story maybe 15-20 years ago, but it might be older than that. With hindsight, it is pretty prophetic. Even for France, now.... It is about an english teacher (in an english-speaking country, probably the US, maternal not foreign language) in high school. She wants to have her st...

Q: Short post apocalyptic story about evil gang

Danny Mc GI read it in the 1980s in some unremembered book of short stories. The tale takes place maybe a generation after nuclear war, in a cabin hidden in the backwoods of America. A man and woman and their early teens daughter live in near starvation amid a snowy landscape, they were (I think) hippies, ...

Q: What are the differences in the description of Medusald, the Golden Hall at Edoras?

M. A. GoldingI recently read that the description of the Golden Hall I am familiar with might be incomplete. In The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Book Three, Chapter 6, "the King of the Golden Hall" there are descriptions of Edoras, the village where the King of Rohan resides, and of Medusald, the Golde...

Q: Stargate teleportation vs Star Trek's: very different technology?

releseabeIt is my impression from what little I know of Stargate is that their method of teleportation does something like warp space: there is no disassembly and reassembly of objects and beings and this avoids in the latter case many philosophical issues such as whether the reassembled being is really t...

Q: Revolt of Third World; South African gold mines nuked

H.A. TreesongIn the 1980s I read a book about a fictional future rise of the Third World. It wasn't well written and I don't remember much about it, but one detail was that apartheid South Afica still existed and was brought down by (nuclear?) explosions in its gold mines.
