Q: Book about a boarding school girl connected by soul to a boy she can't kiss

LaurethI read this book between 2013 and 2015. In the book, a girl's parents die (they may have been related to supernatural hunters or hunted). She is put in a boarding school where she is attracted to a boy. It turns out that she is attracted because her soul was once his. They fight romance because i...

Q: Trying to identify an old sci-fi novel: a group of space travellers visiting a planet previously long-inhabited but regressed?

R.HamperI know this is a very long shot, but for years I've been trying to ID a sci-fi novel, quite likely the first I ever read. Published pre-1982. Fairly short paperback, like an old Tor novel. Novella? Single story, not part of anthology. A group of space travellers (likely human) come to visit (cra...

Q: In Stake Land, any clear explanation as to why the travelers did not stay in the town?

releseabeThe man and his "apprentice" manage to gain admittance to an apparently well-defended town which is very functional -- the kid gets a haircut, there is food, etc. But soon they leave and are subject to not just the obvious dangers but simple privations -- they sleep in a car, there is no running ...

Q: Old fantasy book series with the two main characters being a human male and a spiderling-type female character

Jason LewisI read this book or series of books when I was a kid, maybe 27 - 30 years ago (I am 42 now) so the books are older than that. It involves a group of people that get separated, I believe it’s time travel related or alternate universes. The only real detail I remember is the lead male character has...

Q: Book about a water planet, part of a human empire

GarrettI read the book about 3–5 years ago, though that doesn't mean much as the book felt very old. The book had a blue cover with a silhouette of a boat floating in front of an orange sun right on the front. The style of art seemed older to me. The plot involves a human empire that colonized many p...

Q: Dont know the name to the SciFi Movie

WindlichtI was living at that time in Germany. So the movie was in German. However, Germany was not known back then to make that type of movie. So I assume it came from somewhere else and was dubbed. It was not an animated movie. It probably was in the late 80s that I watched it. I recall three main char...

Q: Identifying some robot YA books

FluxxI'm trying to find some 2010s YA books with robots and cybernetics. One of them had a male protagonist with a missing father who was caught up in a war between humans and robots. Q: Fantasy 3? book series in a castle with only one sane person

parvusAll this is from memory, so some stuff is likely incorrect: I read a first volume of a trilogy, now more than 20 years ago. Q: What is the relationship between Alice and McFeen in "The Vanderlark"?

Rand al'ThorMargaret St. Clair's short story "The Vanderlark" is set on a spaceship in deep space with a crew of two, Alice and McFeen (or Mac). @Slartibartfast Heh. "What is your stance on the greengrocers' apostrophe, and what do you feel is an appropriate punishment for their use?" :D
20:52
@JohnEye hey! :)
@TheLethalCarrot time to walk Stella, I guess you don't want yet another live reading of me telling the story of my first answer here :D
So John, the story begins some three years ago, back when I had been lurking on SFF.SE for a couple weeks, after discovering the Stack Exchange network through the Hot Network Questions list displayed on Stack Overflow
SFF.SE seemed like the stack I'd be the most interested in, so i had been browsing various questions and topic for some time; it quickly became evident that I was enjoying reading and searching for story-id answers (though my searches had found nothing so far, and I could not identify any work by remembering having seen/read it)
By that time, while I still did not have an account, I had gathered the (very) basics of how to write a relevant story-id answer.
So imagine my excitement when some day, a random new user asks for a fantasy book I've read, enjoyed (heck, it was easily my favorite series as a kid then teen, and I still love the stuff), and could name right away!
Furthermore this is a French series (the asker was likely French, and so am I), so the probability of it being identified right away was pretty thin
So I create my account, write the answer, take time to translate the specifics to the best I can (the book never got an English translation that I know of), fervently ensuring my first post conveys that I took the time to get acquainted with the local rules
And when I finally post it, that ducker of an asker had suddenly remembered it, written a one-liner of a self-answer, and pretty much took off! D-:
That booby answer did not even contain the series' title, only a picture of the covers! D-:
So here's the story of my first answer on this site.
21:13
Speaking of story-ID, this post has an answer confirmed in comments; I feel like someone should post it as an actual answer. (I noticed it because the OP went to award mkennedy a bounty on a different post.)
Eventually I kept on searching for other story-id questions, and I honed my skills in that domain. It's a fun pastime, both for the thrill of the hunt and the feeling of having helped someone halfway across the globe finding that one thing they couldn't find for years :)
@JohnEye as per the second part of that question, I've told the story in an unsolicited way a couple of times (too many times if you ask @TheLethalCarrot! :P ), and I've had people ask me about it after reading my profile page, I think, three times
Eh - I did tell that story a number of times... chat.stackexchange.com/…
And if you're wondering, the question was this one.
21:30
My first couple answers were also story-id questions that I had an immediate recognition of.
21:52
I'm trying to formulate a question whose intention would be to elicit a potential candidate's expectation of the time burden of moderating, to see how realistic their commitment would be, but I don't know enough about how much work it actually is. Is there a viable question here? It also relates to how much said candidate would view auditing chat and q/a traffic as "work" vs. something they would do anyway, but again, I don't know how to pose that as a question.
@Jenayah lucky for me my phone was dead :P
@DavidW Could just keep it simple like:

A: 2016 Moderator Election Q&A - Question Collection

Wad CheberHow often, and for how long, are you willing to be on the site each day/week? Our current mods are fantastic, but it is sometimes difficult to find one when you need one. What are your normal usage patterns here?

I’m trying to word one about how involved a mod should be in the community but however I word it, it just ends up being a leading question. And anyway anyone active enough on the site should be aware of issues presented about the mod team in the past
I'm thinking of a question about people's activity on other sites, but worried that it might be perceived as implying some kind of expectation.
There's good and bad aspects (a mod who's active on some of the neighbouring sites like Literature or Movies & TV could make a good ambassador, while a mod who's only active on SFF could be seen as more committed to this specific site), but I'm not thinking of it as a way to distinguish "good" from "bad" candidates, just as a bit of information about the people running.
Not sure what you’d gain from that really. Not sure what aspect would make one more favourable. And you can garner most of that information from profile pages anyway

Q: What's it like being a Science Fiction & Fantasy moderator?

TheLethalCarrotWorkplace currently have a meta on going which asks a few questions to the moderators, it was also asked back in 2014. Whilst these have been posted alongside elections to give moderator candidates a small insight into what they are nominating themselves for I think the questions and their answer...

@TheLethalCarrot No. They’ve been going since then with one fewer moderator.
