Q: Q: book involving a pink creature that time travels

OsitoMy sister and I have very vague recollections of this chapter book - the creature was either an elephant or elephant-like, spoke very fast (dialogue may have been written without punctuation or spacing), and had a strange name. Not much to go on, I know!

Q: Why did Marvel characters from the 80s often have blue hair?

EoinLooking at 1980s X-men comic books, I notice so many characters had blue hair, for example, Wolverine, Beast, Mr.Sinister, and tons of no-name extras. Probably this goes beyond the X-men, but that’s the comic I have in front of me to verify this phenomenon. I suspect it had something to do with...

Q: Trying to find the specific issue/issue number of a Marvel Comic that feature a bonus story of Dr. Strange vs. Loki?

Helbent IVPlot Details/Summary This particularly story was sort of a "bonus" story at the end of another Marvel comic. It may have been a Marvel Double Feature, but I don't think it was. I think it was tacked on to an Avengers comic, but that may not be the case. The story is short, but quite clever, wit...

Q: Is there anything in Marvel canon comparing the power levels/abilities between Johnny Storm (The Human Torch) and Jim Hammond (the original Torch)?

Helbent IVPlot Details/Summary This question is inspired by a 1970s reprint of a Fantastic Four Annual I read as a kid. The premise of the story was that the original Human Torch - Jim Hammond - was reactivated/reborn by The Mad Thinker(?) and sent after the Fantastic Four, with Johnny Storm being the fir...

@DavidW usually I'd probably ask myself whether I'd want to take part in the election (as a nominee I mean), but right now, seeing that I'm having less time to actively spend on SE, I don't think it's very wise, either for the site or myself :/
I'm touched, though

Shawn BeachyMany years ago I read a YA series that I'm trying to find now. Weird that they do that on posts that don't even have images in them. Like it's not only a bot but a stupid (well, poorly coded) bot.

@TheLethalCarrot Yeah, I figured the same but this way no one can say they weren't directed to the company.
There was a similar post on the same question.
20:21
Aye good point
it’s the 3rd on that post, guess the bit is targeting the same posts
I thought that question was already protected after the second one actually
@TheLethalCarrot Are the contents of the post at least hidden in the revision history for 10k+ users?
I think they should be, since there was one helpful spam flag even though not enough to spam-nuke the post altogether.
That's pretty important when there's harmful links involved.
There only needs to be 1 red flag to hide the contents to 10k+ users unless they click through I believe
unlesd the flag is declined before deletion I imagine
Yes, the contents are hidden.
and the one JNat altered the revision history on we can’t see anything obvisouly
more can’t see the link at all rather
It is very strange that the bot has targeted the same post 3 times though. It makes me wonder how it's picking the posts it's replying to.
20:29
@TheLethalCarrot Thought so, just wanted to be absolutely sure.
That’s one of the reasons I’m not that fussed if it’s red flag deleted or 20k deletion as long as you flag first. It’s hidden either way for all users
I thought it made a difference in how the user was penalized?
It does but in my opinion, especially for spammers like this, the difference doesn’t really matter
deleting it is more important
Well, yes, especially for spam that's trying to get people to click on suspicious links it's important for them to disappear, I agree speed is good.

@Randal'Thor Mith checked the auto flag count a week or so back and apparently it was 5 not 3

@Catija whilst you’re here, any chance of us having the site theme design revisited at some point? Things have been quiet on that end for a bit
Seems to be back online now.
Apparently "Redis just ate it" according to Adam.
@TheLethalCarrot Unlikely, honestly. There hasn't been any discussion of themes at all so, really... unless there's some move to add dark mode to some sites or we have tons of designers who have time to work on designs, I don't think there's going to be any work on that sort of thing. :(
Which, to be fair... I feel really terrible about because I was the one out here assuring y'all that it'd happen eventually ... but we've gone through... like three different teams since then and there's just nothing on the schedule for it.
I think the dark mode thing (particularly for y'all) might be the best option - you're probably the easiest site to add dark mode to, since the site was designed that way.
Thank goodness Puzzling was in time to get its theme before whatever happened at SE to put themes/design off the agenda.
And Science Fiction & Fantasy shouldn't complain too much, we've already got one of the most customised chats.
20:56
Aaron just got a team - he's got two devs now, so who knows what he'll work on with those riches of people but they have some pretty big things to do first, like making the entire site responsive to different screen sizes, making the site more accessible, and making some major improvements to the editor.
Getting the "whoa, that background is so weird/different" reaction is completely the norm for anyone who drops links to SFF chat in other rooms.
:D I think the one thing that I'm not a fan of here is the bright green of new messages.
Nothing else in the design is green.
@Catija aye there’s more important things to work on, and it’s good to see things being worked on!, just noseying for info really :)
@Catija Wait what? Green?
dark mode would be good if it gets pushed out to the network proper though
20:58
Am I colour-blind or forgetting something?
green of the text as a new message comes in
Ohh right, sorry.
I was looking at the message backgrounds and only seeing blue and grey.
The momentary green text is kind of funky.
I'm so used to it that I didn't even think of that :-D
I understand. :) We're focusing on stuff that we think is... really important to make the site truly usable... that's why we're looking at outdated content and making review work better and having better onboarding for new users - that stuff is really integral to a great experience using the site and, while a design is important for branding and a feeling of "home"... it's kinda pretty secondary to that other stuff.
@Catija A lot of that seems like the kind of stuff that should've been kept updated gradually over the last decade, but (from an outsider perspective) it took some rejigging of SE organisation for someone to actually get it on the agenda to do.
A lot of the "wah, don't move my cheese" reactions from network regulars who've been used to it the old way for a decade ... probably wouldn't have happened if they'd been used to it getting regularly updated during that decade.
It was 3-5 years of not doing work on the platform.
21:02
I use the term "decade" loosely :-P Like the 6-8 weeks meme.
Better on boarding for new users is probably one of the most important things but relatively difficult to get right
People Don’t Read (TM)

Yep! I saw it. :)
Oh, I almsot forgot.
Sci Fi SE chat, do you know which famous Sci Fi author we celebrate today by convention and with what item?
@Randal'Thor I don't mind the black background, but I hate how the background is visible behind the chat lines text, so I override that client-side.
By hiding the whole background, because that's easier.
@b_jonas I cheated.
But actually that doesn't mention any authors, just Star Wars and actors and stuff.
Given that you mention an item, I'm going to guess Towel Day?
@Randal'Thor Yes, today is Towel day
in honor of Douglas Adams
We even have a post about Douglas Adams today scifi.stackexchange.com/q/247431/4918
Good idea, let's put that to the starboard
Rand: will the proposal scifi.meta.stackexchange.com/a/13243/4918 get deleted, or should we just edit it to note it's been chosen?
Those towels aren't nearly floofy enough.
I just Googled "fluffy towels" :-P If anyone's got a better picture, happy to replace.
I dunno that I'd expect a galactic hitchhiker's towel to be nice and white and fluffy and neatly rolled.
Yeah. I got the same result.
@DavidW depends on how long they've been hitchhiking.
White towels get dirty but are much easier to clean. So they seem sensible.
Fluffy seems like it might make some uses difficult, though.
I'm picturing something more like this: shutterstock.com/es/image-photo/…
21:27
But it likely increases absorbency.
Though I have to say this one is somewhat disconcerting: shutterstock.com/es/image-photo/…
You’re just making me think of Towelie
@DavidW they look like Stella’s towels haha
Those could be the 3 towels I just used last week to wash the dog. Light-and-dark green stripes, grey and formerly-white.
Is someone sneaking into the basement to take pictures of my laundry?
I swear the grey towel even has a band of stitching across it that looks like that.
21:40
@Catija ^ are these betteer?
22:12
@b_jonas Ha. Maybe. I like the colors. It's odd. I was hoping for towels that resembled long shag carpet. ;)
I've confirmed with SD that y'all are still set at 3. Though, if you think spam is sitting around too long, maybe it's worth considering going to 4? I think they've got a ton of data to show their accuracy.
Our spam is mostly gone instantly. And of those that aren’t Smokey normally misses it anyway in my experience
