I posted on Sci Fi SE when many of the hidden ones were still unknown because they'd only appear in future episodes, although we have already made educated guesses about some of them.
scifi.stackexchange.com/q/110555/4918 "Who is this Star Wars character?" (very stylized art) identifies all but one in the question
@Jenayah ^^
https://scifi.stackexchange.com/q/122501/4918 "
Identify a Marvel character with a two-piece magenta mask that does not cover the mouth" question identifies the other characters on the pajama

Hi! My question was flagged as off topic but said it might be good to post in this chat. scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/195093/…
I am not well versed, but it seems like every sci-fi book/movie which takes place in what first appears as a utopia almost always devolves into revealing itself as a dystopia.

Are there any stories I should take a look at where the plot takes place in the context of an actual utopia? I would also be happy with stories that are optimistic sci-fi where the technology is actually the positive force in the story.
2

@ProGirlXOXO You could ask that on the Lit chat too.

@b_jonas thanks!

@ProGirlXOXO Also, how about the utopic city in Jules Verne's Les Cinq Cents Millions de la Bégum? I'm not saying it's a very good description, but it isn't described in a way that reveals it's a dystopia. Obviously it's a bit old.
@ProGirlXOXO Uh, post this part in the Lit chat too, to give context

12:17 AM
@b_jonas wikipedia says "It is remarkable as the first published book in which Verne was cautionary and to some degree pessimistic about the development of science and technology." So maybe I should read a bunch of earlier Jules Verne?

@ProGirlXOXO Sure, but that's mostly about the other city, the one that is making weapons instead of wellfare.
And tries to use the ultimate weapon to destroy the utopic city.

@b_jonas ah thanks for clarifying

It's a novel in two parts, about two people who inherit a huge fortune, and then each found a city to their own image.
How large scale utopia do you want? Could the books with a single group of up to thirty shipwrecked people stuck on a remote island count, if they manage to create a good life for themselves? I'm thinking mostly of L'Île mystérieuse obviously, because Deux ans de vacances wouldn't count as utopistic.
I don't recall any Isaac Asimov or Stanisław Lem stories that could be described as pure utopias that don't continue by revealing serious problems. There could be a hidden one that I don't recall off-hand, but I don't think so. That's not the kind of thing they write.

12:33 AM
Never heard of most of these so they're just going on my reading list. Thanks!
I thought Brave New World was a utopia until I read the author blurb in the book cover
I think a small group could be a utopia but it'd be hard for me to sustain my disbelief.. sounds like a boring existence.

What should be the usage guide for this tag?
^
The scope too? Would it be limited to the original work? Or all the TV, Theatre, Movies adaptations?

I was going to say it should be obvious use it for the book but didn't realise everything technically falls under it as an adaptation

Maybe we can make do with adding the , in conjunction?
But that won't work with all the movies

2 options either use that tag for the original book and define it's usage to that and then create a tag for everything or just get rid of that tag and have one tag for everything

Should we do it ourselves or start a meta for it?

1:35 PM
There's only 1 question so do it yourself if you want
If you're unsure of the route to go on start a meta
Or wait for feedback here

Righto. A Meta would be better I guess so that the Chatroom doesn't get cluttered with all this

@TheLethalCarrot saw that. Thanks.

@SQB As a note, I pointed out ... somewhere in that answer list... the left nav has to be black text, so we can't put the starfield down the sides...

SQB
@Catija I missed that, but I suspected as much.
@Catija Why does it have to be black?

@Catija Assuming we were to design a new background image that was lighter would it be possible to get a background image rather than some bland block colour?

3:30 PM
The entire point of the update is to make the layout elements as similar between the sites as possible for a more unified experience. Every time we change something on the network, it causes a cascade of bugs on different sites with custom elements, so we end up spending a ton of time fixing those bugs rather than actually working on features for the site, particularly ones people have been begging or years.
Having things be as similar as possible makes it less likely that something will break.
@TheLethalCarrot Possibly, but probably not until after the full network rollout is done. The sidebars can be a pattern as long as it doesn't obscure the text's readability. Y'all are free to have a separate discussion about solutions for this if you want. Things like replacing the top bar black with the star field is probably easy to revert... though I'm not certain... new elements are different.

SQB
@Catija I appreciate that. But of course that needs to be balanced with the desire for each Stack to have its own look and feel.

There's a balance between keeping the sites predictable and easy to transition between - which is something many users have concerns about - and between giving sites their own unique elements. I don't think that not having a dark themed sidebar is a defining element that otherwise prevents y'all from having a special look and feel. How flexible this is may change in the future but, for the time being... this is one of the rules.

SQB
I see.

... and, not to try to pass the buck on things... there are some of these that I don't understand, either... Right now we have someone who's going through and redoing 60+ different sites and trying to do it in a short period of time so that they can move on to actually enhancing the left nav to be more useful to everyone along with some other features... it's possible things will change in the future, or not... but at this point, this is what it is.

SQB
I understand. I don't have to like it, but I understand that you all are doing this to ultimately improve the Stack Network.

3:42 PM
In general, I think they're doing a really good job with things, even if I get a lot of unkind responses or downvotes on my announcement posts. But I've been talking with this team for a few weeks and they really do have the best interest of the network in mind, which I think is good. We want to be able to give y'all the Features you've been requesting for years and I'm so excited to see what happens in the next year or two.

SQB
> "Logic clearly dictates that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few."

I'd dig the black gutters that web herald mocked up for now with hope for white-on-black navigation in the future.
(I wonder if we'd get so used to the grey sidebar that white-on-black would look weird by that point.)

5:56 PM
Finished reading the Meta thread (the main one).
There were two main arguments, as reminded above:
1/ less bugs when launching new stuff
2/ uniformity is better
I mean, everyone wants 1/, obviously. Can't argue with devs trying to reduce the time wasted on known bugs.
2/ is...
... how exactly can you praise "community", to the point it's like checkmark 1 of raising out of Beta, and want to unify 140+ communities under the same banner?
Nobody is actually part of 140+ communities, is it? (flagging, Charcoal stuff excepted - that's not "actual" community, no offense)
This thing contradicts itself from head to tail
@RobertCartaino Surely the goal should be to standardise things to improve the lives of developers whilst also retaining a suitable level of customisation for those sites that desire it? Of course there is a balance to be reached. However in my opinion these standardisation proposals swing too far in the "make the lives of devs easier" direction. Note that I am talking about the skinning/theming proposals, not the remainder of the layout changes described in the OP. — Steven Rands Mar 13 at 16:56
I'm going to repeat something here that I wrote in a mod chat a while: I'm frustrated, and I'm losing faith in Stack Exchange to be able to rise to the mission they've set themselves. When I see SE work on side project after side project, instead of helping individual sites succeed, it feels like they've given up. "There is nothing more we can do to help you. How about a new top bar?" — Zyerah Mar 14 at 18:38
Those are two very relevant comments.

user132126
I think if we want to have nicer looking websites, there needs a way to monetize the stacks.

user132126
I'm hoping SO can find ways to get the income they need to be successful.

user132126
So if developer time needs to be put into stuff that's making products that actually make money, and allow the network to continue to even exist, then that's understandable.

@WebHead In 2015 they decided to refocus on Stack Overflow, and their efforts in capacity as helping the world of developers as their main market.
Before:
After:
Illustrates their shift in focus pretty succinctly

user132126
They also raised funding specifically for those.

6:10 PM
So for now it looks like their primary concern is finding ways to grow & develop resources for software developers

user132126
Which makes sense from a business standpoint. Tech companies want to hire better developers, and want their developers to have access to tools they need to succeed (such as SO).

@doppelgreener And we are still waiting for the promised Hello Kitty Q&A.

user132126
Ah, documentation. That was an interesting idea.

Viewpoint character is a nurse in a special military camp, modern day, constructed near some sort of intermittent time warp. At random intervals, soldiers from a R...

Q: What are the longest rivers in Middle-earth?

Pelle LundkvistI was trying to find a list of the lengths of the Great Rivers of Middle-earth It would be interesting to see some size comparisons between the Great Rivers of Beleriand like Sirion and Gelion and the ones of Middle-earth in the Third Age. There are different maps showing how Beleriand and Third...

@Loong oh I thought that was an unofficial Anime.SE logo ahah
Hey, question.I'm not going to make that an actual proposition, it's just curiosity: would you be okay with ads for some time if it meant keeping SFF's "old" design?
(or whatever site with a cool design, like RPG, Worldbuilding and stuff)

@Jenayah won't help; they already have plans for stuff like that. see meta.stackexchange.com/questions/306737/…

@Mithrandir nah it's not a meta question, just asking what you 5-6 guys present right now think
Assuming the ads are images or stuff

Q: Which characters are reincarnations?

AdamantOn Ice Fantasy Destiny, some of the characters are reincarnated. For instance, Luo Luo, clearly, is Li Luo, and Feng Suo is Ka Suo. There are also some characters who are not reincarnated at all (Feng Tian, Ying Kong Shi), and at least one character who was reincarnated with all her memories in a...

Q: X-Men fanfic starring misspelled X-Men and their logical powers

FuzzyBootsI was quoting Rouge Angles of Satin (Warning: TVTropes link!) to someone and it made me flash back to a fanfic I read, possibly on the FFML (FanFic Mailing List) around the year 2000, which had a story about the X-Men, but using common misspellings for their names and giving them powers that matc...

Q: Christian conversion X-men fanfic involving Wolfsbane and Wolverine in Limbo, autumnal theme

FuzzyBootsI read it probably 15 years ago (1998-2002), while in college. It was on a website devoted to fanfic, but might have originated on the FFML (FanFiction Mailing List). It started with Rahne being trained by Wolverine in the Danger Room shortly after the whole Genosha mutate thing (she was struggli...

Q: Who are Li Luo and Ka Suo's past reincarnations?

AdamantIn one of Li Luo's past reincarnations (before Luo Luo), she's speaking with one of Ka Suo's reincarnations and says that he was able to escape death by writing "a poem in seven steps." This is clearly a reference to "The Quatrain of Seven Steps," suggesting that Ka Suo's preincarnation is Cao Zh...

I've been browsing through some new designs
Academia, U&L, RPG Meta etc
it's still way less good than it was before but it's not as bad.
Blame SFF's dark theme :/
But well, I mean we can't reasonably keep that ugly "black and then gray all of a sudden" design can we?
Gather your graphist/creative friends
there's work to do

Q: Looking for a 80s Novel Series about post apocalypse world where 4 soldiers try and bring order

RobertLooking for a novel series I read in the 1980s about 4 soldiers (the leader was a US Marine Force Recon member). There was also a Navy Officer, Green Beret soldier and Air Force fighter pilot. They were some sort of special team put together by the last president before the war...and now travel ...

Q: Do starfleet ships still have prefix numbers?

ServitorIn Star Trek the Wrath of Khan, it is revealed that all starships have a prefix number, allowing other ships to order a starfleet vessel to lower its shields. This was created in case a vessel is captured by an enemy. By the 24th century and beyond, is there any evidence that starfleet vessels s...
