Q: Is there a term for the science fiction trope where a character lists two historical things and a future thing?

WickethewokIn Babylon 5 for example, a character lists famous bombings like "Hiroshima, Dresden, San Diego" with the first items in the list being real and the last being fictional. This dialog technique of casually tying the past into a fictional future seems to be common in franchises with world-building ...

Q: How could Sirius have rounded up the old Order of the Phoenix?

AlexWhen Voldemort returns in Goblet of Fire, Dumbledore attempts to reorganize the Order of the Phoenix as soon as possible. In pursuit thereof he gives the following instructions to Sirius: Sirius, I need you to set off at once. You are to alert Remus Lupin, Arabella Figg, Mundungus Fletche...

Why is this site 99% Harry Potter?

@CorvoAttano It's not. Only about 10% of the questions are about Harry Potter:

Q: story identification-I think it's and indie movie about alien abduction. saw it on popcorn time

Victor Hugo Hernandez HernandeA you wakes up at a place similar to an hospital and begins to run away from there. Seems to be in earth and he's being chased. At some point he realizes he has super strength, like an orange glow comes out from his arms. At the end he realizes he's not on earth, he's on a spaceship that imitates...

Why?

@b_jonas just hide the feed ;)

@CorvoAttano Because the books are riddled with inconsistencies and holes that confuse people and they ask about them. Perfect for collecting a little rep to reach any privileges you might want without doing any real work.

Q: Short story about a romance during a nuclear crisis; title was possibly "I Remember"

Malcolm BrownI am looking for a short story I read probably 50 years ago, which had an ongoing refrain "I remember ... " about a romance that occurs while a nuclear crisis gradually builds up and finally the bomb is dropped. The title may have been along the lines of "I Remember"

11:06 AM
@Edlothiad That's rather unnecessarily snarky and dismissive of the people who do put effort into writing quality answers to Harry Potter questions. Just because you don't like them doesn't make them worthless or an "easy way to farm rep".
Researching Harry Potter questions is no less "real work" than answering other questions on this site.

SeamusthedogDoes anyone know the names of other kinds of money used in Sci-if movies? I know of credits in Star Wars and units in Guardians of the Galaxy but can't think of any others.

@CorvoAttano Try @FuzzyBoots or @Adamant. They're both high up on the DC answerer list and pingable in chat.
@SQB Are you thinking of Agents of Nothing, perhaps? Or one of these:

Q: Short Story About Interminable Rain on Venus

tbrooksideIt's not All Summer in a Day. This was a story about explorers on Venus who are separated from their base (possibly they're lost, possibly they suffered equipment failure, possibly they're just traveling from base to base) who are slowly being driven insane because it never stops raining. Yeah, the Comic Book Shop.

Woah, it's been dead for a long time

1:08 PM
@SQB @Jenayah Want me to unfreeze that room? I'm a bit worried that doing so might siphon off a lot of activity from here, but I can if you want :-)

@Randal'Thor from where I stand, better to unfreeze that when there's really too much talk about comics in TREU it's becoming unbearable for the other people :p
So far we've discussed like not even a page of messages about comics, so I'm fine with keeping in TREU... And my computer prefers it when I have less tabs opened :p

SQB
I'm very much in favour of keeping conversation as much in one room as possible, only splitting off if people start complaining.

Good, then we're all on the same page.
(the page of a comic, perhaps :-P )

Q: Jedi's getting busy

SeamusthedogIt is implied that strength in the Force can be passed down to your offspring so why are Jedi's not allowed to have families? Sure it would be better for the order to have members strong with the Force? I think that it is canon that Jedi's can have casual relationships but no permanent attachment...

1:28 PM
@Mithrandir I disagree, I've not made any comments with regards to all answers, nor have I stated that there aren't any users who put in effort, or that their answers are never of high quality. You're welcome to misinterpret my words like that, however that's not what I'd said.

@Edlothiad It does sound dismissive to say people can get HP rep "without doing any real work".
And nobody said you'd accused all HP answerers of not putting in effort or producing quality.

Harry Potter questions do also tend to be easier to research because their usually about rather minor inconsistencies which are riddled throughout the text, or a little piece of information which was thrown away in one book and possibly answered in a throw away. Those can be, rather quickly, googled and the information compiled. I feel like I'm quite a prime example of that, given I have 269 score from 9 answers, an average of 30 upvotes per answer, and I've never read the books.
@Randal'Thor dismissive of the people who do put effort into writing quality answers to Harry Potter questions.
That's stating I dismiss those who put in effort. Which, implies, I'm stating all answers are low quality.
Which I didn't do. I merely said, it's definitely one of the many easy ways to farm rep, relevant since the mass of question make it easier than most.

@Edlothiad Yes, because saying "HP is a place for easy rep without doing much work" lessens the achievements of those who have earned rep from good work there.
Word of advice: when you've said something that's offended someone, it's often better to simply apologise than to have a long argument about misinterpretations.

Again, I said the conditions are perfect for getting rep to access privileges without doing any real work.
Being accused of doing things I haven't, I don't see how I'm being terrible trying to clarify a stance. Although I'll remember that piece of advice.

Q: Which characters smoke in Harry Potter?

TheAshThere are very few wizards or witches in Harry Potter who smoke. The only one I'm aware of is Mundungus Fletcher. (Of course, Vernon Dursley does as well, but he isn't a wizard.) Is there anyone else who smokes?

0
Q: Is there an in-universe reason why so few Harry Potter characters smoke?

TheAshVery few wizards smoke in Harry Potter. However, drinking is glorified and quite regular. Is there an in-universe reason for this disparity of the Wizard World to the Muggle world, where smoking is more common?

1:38 PM
I've also never stated that those conditions were limited to Harry Potter, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯, guess I'm only digging my grave deeper.

Oh great, Harry Potter answers. Just look at me if you want a bad example. I don't have well-researched answers, and most of my HP answers don't get much score. Then I got bored on the Harry Potter answers and now rarely give any, plus I'm a bit scared of the Dark Lord.
@Marvin Seriously? Haven't you noticed that nobody smokes in works written in 1900 because there's been a push for that from Holywood?
I mean, come on.
Plus, most of the characters in the first few books are children under 15 years old.

@Edlothiad I appreciate (and agree with) the intent of what you said, but that doesn't change the fact that the way it came out would offend some people.

Although at least I have enough answer score that if I ever churn out the remaining 60 answers, I'll get the golden hammer.

So many people have that golden hammer by now.

Smoking is taboo in the UK? :o

Eh, might depend on where you compare it to.

I'm from France remember? :D

A lot of people smoke here, but there are laws restricting where you can do it.
E.g. no smoking in enclosed public places like cafes, buses, etc.
Maybe not even in open public places like railway stations.

1:53 PM
@Randal'Thor aye same there

I don't know how much of this is EU law and how much is UK-specific.

Smoking among general populace is pretty taboo ime, people I know often receive negative comments for smoking and there's a general sense of disgust around the activity.

I think that varies among different circles of people.
IME, smoking is more widespread among the working class.

Q: Any stories about aliens invading/taking over Mars instead of Earth?

SethCamdAlien invasion stories all seem to have the same old boring story line, they arrive on Earth, and they proceed to bomb the whole world, as if Earth would be livable after leveling it with that much firepower. That made me wonder, if I were an alien invasion force, are there cleverer, neater way...

Wish that disgust was sensed the same way back home
All environments smoke... And imposing the smoke on others sucks

@CorvoAttano: Unfortunately, most of my knowledge comes from Wikipedia and healthy use of Google. I'll occasionally binge a storyline via the collections I can get from my library, but that's about it.

Q: What's the source for this claim that Data ages?

ThePopMachineThis Screenrant article (sorry) claims that Data's physical appearance is programmed to age at the same rate as a human being. This element of his body was likely written in to allow Brent Spiner to portray the character for as long he wanted. What's the source for this claim?

Q: How do you take your Tauntaun, medium or rare?

SeamusthedogDo any human in the Star Wars Galaxy eat meat? In the films at least there are a few scenes of people eating but it only seems to be fruits or veg. Jabba eats a frog type thing and Chewie smells the meat the Ewoks leave out as a trap but no humans seem to eat any non veggie stuff.

> 'I didn't want to be famous' - Ottawa Citizen

If ever there was a time for J.K. Rowling to light up a cigarette, you would
have to think now would be it. After all, she used to smoke "like a
chimney," the room she is sitting in at the Royal York Hotel reeks of smoke,
there are ashtrays scattered about, and she's even more nervous about her
mammoth SkyDome reading than she was on Sunday, when she first disclosed the
fact at a well-attended press conference. So, wouldn't a deeply puffed ciggy
go a long way right now? "I gave up May 10, 2000," the 34-year-old single
If anyone wants to write an answer, that might be a good place to start.
Tobacco smoking in the United Kingdom is prevalent among a sizeable, but continuously reducing minority of the population. Smoking is legally permitted, with certain conditions upon location arising from the bans enacted separately in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. It has been argued that smoking puts considerable strain upon the NHS due to the health problems which can be directly linked with smoking. Successive UK Governments have endeavoured to reduce the prevalence of smoking. As part of this commitment, the NHS currently offers free help to smokers who want to quit. =...
Prevalence of tobacco consumption is reported by the World Health Organization (WHO), which focuses on smoking (not smokeless chewing tobacco) due to reported data limitations. Smoking has therefore been studied more extensively than any other form of consumption.Smoking is generally five times higher among men than women; however, the gender gap declines with younger age. In developed countries smoking rates for men have peaked and have begun to decline, and also started to stall or decline for women.Smoking prevalence has changed little since the mid-1990s, before which time it declined in English...

Q: What is Aunt Muriel's maiden name?

user103390We know Ron Weasley had a great-aunt named Muriel. However, this was on his mother's side, so they wouldn't share a name. If Muriel is related to Molly on her father's side, she could be Muriel Prewett, but we don't know if she is. Is anything known on the topic?

@Randal'Thor in favour of the newer question, which has the better description.

@SQB The dupe policy doesn't distinguish between those two kinds of 'acceptance'.

@Randal'Thor but I do. I tend to favour green check marks.
Great story. I like the ambiguous ending.
