Q: Oldest Stargate

Paul LangMy question is why is it assumed that SGU star gates the oldest design gate? I am aware of off handed comments made by the creator of the series and of the comic adaptation of it but if you go with the 60000000 years they claim the math doesn’t work right to be within the confines of the known un...

Q: Fiction book about a boy who finds out he has some kind of powers from another boy while at school and joins some government-like group with him

AirszI read this book in middle school around 2013 maybe, about a 12-14 year old boy, (Boy A) who meets (Boy B) after somehow making a table flip with his mind in the cafeteria; (Boy B) tells him that he has some kind of powers and there's a facility with other kids like him who use some kind of chip ...

Q: Looking for a sf-novel about a young girl waking up on another planet

Martin HeljedalYA science fiction. I read this in the mid-late 1990s. I do not know when it was written. The story is about a young girl who wakes up from stasis on a planet. I dont remember if the ship had crashed or landed there, but she is the only one woken up. The rest of the crew is alive and wakes at the...

Well, as it turns out, the book I was looking for is The Gift by Peter Dickinson, so I won't be writing that request after all.
Dutch translation had titled it Davy's Talent.

Q: How much was Luke's speeder worth?

Terence EdenIn the film "A New Hope", Ben Kenobi promises to pay Han Solo "2,000 now" for passage to Alderaan. In order to pay this, he tells Luke to sell his speeder. I assume both Luke and Ben have some modest savings. And, perhaps, they borrowed some credits from someone. But is it ever stated - or is it ...

Q: Novel: The apocalypse began, monsters spawned and people got special powers

jaytI'm looking for a novel I read a year or so ago where the main character was injured. When the apocalypse began, monsters spawned and people got special powers. MC's main power was ice. MC used knowledge from the future to use crystals from the bodies of the monsters to power up while protecting ...

Q: French Snowbound murder mystery with clerical 'detective' adapted for movie

PotatoCrispI'm asking this question about a movie here because I firmly believe it was dramatised from a book using a well known literary character. I want to identify the book so I can read it. The movie: This is an old, probably french, classic black and white film (possibly italian co-production?). The p...

Q: Book about a guy who discovers he has super-hearing and then other powers

sara venvilleIt starts out with us finding out the main character has superpowers because he can hear his neighbours' kettle going off and various other things that he shouldn't be able to hear. He finds out his parents used to be in an Avengers-like team but something happened that caused them to all lose th...

Hrm. Fixing accents. I have a quote from a book description here. The quote is from the online blurb of the book (same at Amazon).
But the book title has the correct accents on "Anadûnê" so it looks like the missing accents in the text are an artifact of online (probably machine) transcription.
So do I correct the text with the missing accents, or leave it alone?

Q: Are the Star Wars and Dragonlance deities comparable?

G_Hosa_PhatIn season 3 of Star Wars Rebels, we are introduced to the Bendu - a powerful and ancient Force-wielding entity that lives on the planet Atollon where the Ghost's crew and the rest of Phoenix Squadron have set up Chopper Base. At one point, the Bendu, speaking with Kanan Jarrus and Ezra Bridger, m...

Q: Book, alien uses mindcontrol machine to manipulate a mob of humans

LAKI read this around 1981, in the US, in English, in paperback most likely. I feel like it dated to the 50, 60s or early 70s at the latest. The only scene I remember is: A man (the protagonist, I believe) watches an alien creature, who I think was somewhat caterpillar-like, use a machine to manip...

Q: Anime about two girls who transport a loner kid from a classroom to a fantasy world

DanThere's also this alien they can ask a question every time they complete stuff for him. Like saving a village. Also another task is in the "real" current Japan. Q: Where did the Wizarding magic originate?

Nate DawgThe Wizarding World in Harry Potter is a vast place with magic, monsters, and evil-doers. There are spells to do just about anything, from cooking and cleaning to doing schoolwork, or from committing acts of evil; all kinds of things. Where did the magic originate? And why do Wizards only control...

@AncientSwordRage Thanks!
Why do people seem to think "validate my head-canon?" isn't opinion-based?
18:14
@DavidW because you can validate it with actual-canon, or give good subjective answer based on solid reasoning
not that it's the only way to answer
Meh. It's still head-canon.
Heh. "Flag on. Flag off."
Cue developer training montage.

Q: Book title where a space faring character is turned inside out

DougLooking for the title of a book. A spaceship malfunction results in an individual being turned inside out with their organs now on the outside of their body. They are still alive, for a moment. This is a vague starting point, as there are many similar stories of horrific ways to die in space of...

18:53
@DavidW so?
"Does Harry have a beard?" Is a valid question whether they say it's their head canon or not.
Not sure what you were implying by that...
It's a dig at all the Drarry fan-fic.
"Who's the best Wizard duelist?" Is also answerable even if the posters head canon is Dobby
But if it's unacceptable, fine.
@DavidW I misinterpreted/knee jerk deleted it
Apologies
It's fine, it's just chat.
18:57
But! "My head canon is that dumbledor has the best beard, who do you think it is?" Is 100% POB and should be flagged/closed.
@AncientSwordRage But that's not how a head-canon question would be asked, it would by "Why is Dobby the best Wizzard?"
@DavidW ok that just needs a frame challenge though?
"Dobby isn't a Wizard, but the greatest wizard if all time is often stated to be Dumbledor... Etc
It's not much different to "is X the first use of Y in a story"
I get that a frame challenge is a reasonable response, it just seems to often spend too much effort on too low-value a question.
I'd rather just downvote and move on.
And occasionally make fun of it in chat, except that someone takes all the fun out of the latter. ;)
@DavidW that's completely valid
@DavidW I'm a moderator, I thought sucking the fun out of everything was my job?
Oh right. Sometimes I forget and I treat you like a normal person.

Q: Book title where characters slow down perceived time in order to time travel

DougLooking for the title of a book where a small number of people (5-10) are passengers on a space ship that constitutes a time traveling MacGuffin. Q: Why can’t jedi/sith destroy the opponent’s lightsaber by sliding down it and cutting the tip of its hilt?

PhilippeI’ve seen a lot of questions regarding why isn’t there a guard on lightsabers, but none of them (nor the answers) I’ve seen tackle on the subject of the lightsabers weak spot (at least in my mind, I may be mistaken). When two jedi/sith are in a duel, often times they not only hit each other, but ...
