Q: Are Star Trek’s dermal regenerators more advanced than Star Wars Synthskin?

BillI’m trying to figure out if Star Trek’s dermal regenerators are more advanced than Star War’s synthskin. Dermal regenerators regrow skin but I wonder if spraying an open wound with synthskin would be just as good if not better. The Last Jedi junior novelization said Kylo Ren waited too long for b...

Q: Why do the Wakandans speak English?

AdamantIn the MCU, the inhabitants of the nation of Wakanda largely speak English (although other languages, such as Xhosa, Zulu, and Igbo, are also heard). It's not simply that they are cosmopolitan and happen to know English: this is the case even when people are speaking among themselves, not foreign...

Q: Old anime movie involving a boy raised by a robot and a ship called 'Siegfried'

KayA boy was raised by a robot guy and I remember there was a ship called 'Siegfried,' I think, and it was powered by the bad sister. I also remember that the robot died protecting the boy, now a teen.

Q: Was this reference in Starship Troopers a real one?

gowenfawrIn the book Starship Troopers, Colonel Nielssen is discussing the chain of command with Juan Rico and two other cadets: If you go back to the Second Global War, you can find a case in which a naval junior officer took command of a naval ship and not only fought it but sent signals as if he was a...

@Marvin Are these inspiration-type questions really off-topic? There was a previous one from this user, asking about the inspiration of the inspiration of Batman, which was fair enough to close (too many levels of separation). But this one seems pretty reasonable.

@ClaraDiazSanchez Inspiration questions aren't off-topic, but The Scarlet Pimpernel is.

7:30 PM
@DavidW Interestingly Stan Lee refers to the Scarlet Pimpernel as "The first superhero"

Well, perhaps a Batman-style "super"hero, except without the super-tech and the supervillains... In other words, I don't really see it.
But certainly he's entitled to his opinion - as are the community here.
Sorry, this is not coming off as genial as I'm intending it too.
I'm not trying to be a jerk, but I'm afraid it may be my default mode. :-P
I do agree that it's an interesting opinion. (I just don't agree with the opinion.)
To the extent that inspiration questions are on-topic, my concern (problem is too strong a word) with them is that absent a clear statement from the creator of a work, or a clear reference to another work (re-using character names, for instance), most answers will simply be guesses; hard to prove or disprove.

7:46 PM
@DavidW That's what evidence is for. Not everything needs to have an absolute answer grounded in Word of God statements; sometimes it's possible to make a good argument based on circumstantial evidence, even if it can't be proved absolutely. See also Good Subjective.
I migrated the Bat question to Literature, where it's definitely on-topic.

8:21 PM
@Randal'Thor I may have been a bit dogmatic in my statement. Obviously it's possible for a question to ask about the inspiration for an element where a prior work is highly likely to be an inspiration. I think my opinion is impacted more by "Is X the inspiration for Y?" than "What is the inspiration for X?"

Q: Pre-history Fiction Book Identification

TBOI read a book about 10-15 years ago that I would love to read again but can’t remember the title. It consisted of a collection of stories, starting with early humans on the plains of Africa, and jumping forward from there. The “shtick” of it was that the members of the family were consistently ca...

Q: Sci Fi/Adventure Anime of the late 70s or 80s

Admiral AckbarI'am looking for an old anime movie from 30-40 years ago, which was released on VHS in Germany. It was definitely Japanese style anime, definitely hand drawn. I think it was a sci-fi setting, because they were using strange weapons (exploding marbles). I am not exactly sure if it was dubbed in Ge...
