Q: A manga about people fighting past historical figures such as Jack the Ripper

José Alejandro Castelán IbarraI remember reading a manga around 2010-2012 where characters have to fight historical figures that they are the reincarnation of and the first chapter features a fight against Jack the Ripper. It must have been a short serialization and dropped after a few chapters as I never heard of it again. T...

Q: Looking for stories about a scientific approach to First Contact

Freddie RAfter watching Arrival, and reading Project Hail Mary, I've realised I really enjoy reading about how a few scientists (possibly from both sides) go about initiating communication and information exchange. In Arrival this mostly takes the form of glyph and linguistic analysis, which was so detail...

Q: Short sci-fi story of scientists testing an upscaled generator in a place that is 'nowhere' (reached by portal)

enkorvaksIn this story, there are several portals to other places (and possibly, as speculated by characters, times). I don't know if they 'just happened', or if there was a technology involved in opening them. I also don't recall if there were a permanent thing, or if they could be turned on and off. I t...

Q: Difference between Navigator and Helmsman

Sovereign InquiryIn Star Trek, what is the difference between the navigator and the helmsman? Generally, the helmsman seems to be much more important, or at least does much more manual work. Memory Alpha's descriptions seem to be pretty congruent in both its articles on helmsman and navigator. In the series, the ...

Q: What is the reference behind names "Alexander, Julian and Francis"?

wipIn Japanese science-fiction stop-motion movie "Junk Head", the protagonist meets three individuals named "Alexander, Julian and Francis". It is surprising because all other characters have less traditional, more futuristic names ("Hokuro", "Ponta", ...). Are those three names a reference to some ...

Q: Does the Star Wars original trilogy imply that Darth Vader aimed at deposing the Emperor with a converted Luke's help?

nerd114844I am slightly rusty when it comes to all the details, but let me summarize my doubt and mention a few relevant evidences. Throughout episodes V and VI, it seems as though Vader is seeking to recruit Luke for the Emperor's sake. Not only does he declare that intention in the Emperor's presence, bu...

Q: What is the name of a book where interdimensional shape changers invade earth and the protagonists travel on a cobbled together train to fight them?

Matthew Scrutton I've been trying to find this for years. Its about these shape shifting creatures invading earth, and a team building a cobbled together train to go and find a way of eliminating them. I remember the train had a holly wreath on its front. I must have read it 20 odd years ago.

Q: 1970s Wonder Woman/Batman comic where they have to fight an evil Walt Disney

DavidWI read this in the late 1970s, but have long since lost the comic. The villain in the story is a Walt Disney expy, and the story takes place at a serial-numbers-filed-off version of Disney World, with Micky/Minnie Mouse expy minions. "Walt Disney" is using "Disney World" to harvest people's life ...

@Marvin <sigh> Once again my google-fu lets me down. Apparently this was really simple.

@DavidW one slight edit...

Ah, that makes sense. I've been reading TVTropes so long I've just absorbed it into my vocabulary.

@DavidW same! I had to explicitly look for a non TVT link

Mrs. Cake

Shouldn't that be "rains of spaniels"? Or is a particular Spaniel causing the rain, preumably in a plane.

@Spencer The green-grocers' apostrophes are a feature, along with the incorrect spelling of "huje".
(I believe it's supposed to represent a rather more workman-like counterpoint to the original message: "NEITHER RAIN NOR SNOW NOR GLOM OF NIT CAN STAY THESE MESENGERS ABOT THEIR DUTY")

@Spencer I think it's a play on "Spaniard's reigns", but what TP was aping I know not

7:03 PM
@DavidW Yeah, I figured that, just running with the gag.
@AncientSwordRage It's been over 20 years since I read any TP, which IIRC was Pyramids!
@DavidW But, to be consistent, shouldn't it be "Spaniard's Rain's"?
@David was that Mort?

The quote is from Men At Arms

But the official slogan features more in Going Postal.
(Where Moist demonstrates his ability to see the letters that aren't there.)
It was great the way Pratchett was able to take a throw-away joke, return to it years later, and show how it actually made sense in his world.

7:23 PM
@DavidW he's good at that

Looks like the last one I have is Small Gods. That when malls still had bookstores.

@DavidW ahh I meant the first "don't ask about..." Quote

There's still a B&N in one of those faux small town Main Street strip malls nearby. That's the last brick and mortar bookstore around.

@Spencer we have Waterstones in town
Not sure if you get those in the US?

7:43 PM
@AncientSwordRage No, but I think I've ordered online from them

I'm lucky that the SF bookstore in town is still (just barely) holding on.
They were lucky in that they'd just gotten all their stock (including used) online in the fall of 2019, so when the pandemic hit they just went pickup/delivery only.

My statement about "The last brick and mortar bookstore" was overstated and a little tonedeaf. There are a half dozen or so old-fashioned storefront booksellers scattered around the city, mostly selling used books.

Q: What is Mafalda’s surname?

Alex DownsThere exists a character that was cut from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (the book). Her name was Mafalda and she was a cousin to the Weasleys on Mrs Weasley’s side (the Prewetts). @DavidW We had a fabled SF bookstore nearby but it closed in 1997.
If you went up to the second floor you needed to keep near the walls or you might go through the floor... but they put folding tables in the middle of the room to keep people in the safe zone.

8:15 PM
@Spencer And loaded them up with books? :)

8:44 PM
@DavidW Yes, and you just had to go see what was there.
Obviously.

9:01 PM
I miss little stores that were built into converted homes.
That describes a lot of the used bookstores I used to haunt.
Though I don't know if there were any that had books upstairs. Maybe HoSF, but that was so many years ago I can't really recall.
