Q: Movie about a lab where they were trying to trap the souls of dying people

Andrea GonzalezI remember seeing this movie around 1990 and it was already on TV so it could have been a little older. It was about a lab where they were trying to catch the souls and consciousnesses of dying people. They had a guy who had terminal cancer and his name was Kent, and when he died they were gonna ...

Q: Know a short story (Heinlein?) about a man constantly fightling alien life forms, realizing at the end that they're projections of his own feelings?

aliceI just saw an old interview of Roger Waters where he describes a sci-fi short story, probably by Robert Heinlein, that he read in his youth, so dating back to the 1960s at least, and I'd really like to find it & read it myself. I'll transcribe his description directly : "It's about a guy on a co...

Q: Peter Mark Richman (Star Trek, Twilight Zone, many, many others), RIP

Helbent IVCharacter actor Mark Peter Richman passed away January 21, 2021 at the age of 93. In the sci-fi and fantasy genres, he's probably best remembered as the brusque but cagey Ralph Offenhouse in the Star Trek: Next Generation episode "The Neutral Zone." Richman, however, appeared in a staggering nu...

Q: Help me find movie from the 80's/90's with a deadly virus that makes people spew virulent goo

AchiI have vague memories of a movie I saw as a kid in the 90's, the movie itself might have been from outside the US and from earlier than the 90's (I'd say back as far as maybe early 80's), would not surprise me if it was Italian for example. Relatively low budget, looked kind of "grimy" from what ...

Q: Need help finding D&D book that I read when I was a kid. help please and thank you

zquenceIve been trying to find a book series I read when I was a kid. I don't have much information but one of the main things I remember was they invented gunpowder by using magic to boil water into a powder, and was ignited by rehydrating it. This was a major plot point several times. I also remember ...

How're Stackizens today?

Stacking along

@TheLethalCarrot yeah? Been up to anything exciting lately?

I put down a patio the other week but just been busy with work as of late

@TheLethalCarrot Didn't you get a vet to do it professionally?
busy with work is a familiar line
'lo @alex

The other dev left so it's just me and the boss for a bit and there's only 8 of us in the company anyway. So most support calls come to me on top of trying to do my actual development work

11:09 AM
ooof, I've been in a direct support role, it can really disrupt your flow

It's always been the case here with us being so small, but when I started there were two other devs (both senior to me), neither have been replaced yet
Also here's Stella "helping" with the patio

@TheLethalCarrot Stella is always such a good floof to see
@TheLethalCarrot how long has it been? Is there a raise on the cards at all?

Couple of years on one, other was just over a month ago
I had a raise this month but it wasn't that big. To be honest so far the laid backness of the company is a bigger positive than lower pay but we'll see how long that holds out
They're looking at getting an apprentice dev (as I was) but they'll obvs need training
@AncientSwordRage My wife runs an ig for her if you're into that sort of thing :P

@TheLethalCarrot I'm into pictures of Stella but not IG unfortunately, but I do like the idea of pets having accounts on there
@TheLethalCarrot I feel that

I don't use it either, or any social media, not my sort of thing

11:21 AM
I've definitely decided against becoming a contractor for similar reasons, it seems stressful

Oh yeah, and if reading The Workplace has taught me anything it's that people like not to pay you at all

@TheLethalCarrot I do some, but I'm not big on that one in particular. I'm trying to wean myself off of anything FB related
@TheLethalCarrot or that you might be out of work for 6 months, so you'd better have saved up! Or that there's no longer a safety net of any kind

True, my uncle is sort of a permanent contractor for a big bank working in London/Germany... his pay is stupidly great but you do miss out on other benefits
You been up to anything exciting lately?
@TheLethalCarrot One story he likes to tell is a few years back him and his friend went for the same job, they both got it and the interviewer asked them what wage they were looking for. He said figure X and his friend said x + 20k and they both got what they asked for just like that.... no negotiation

@TheLethalCarrot I've been fasting for Ramadan, which is more fulfilling than exciting
@TheLethalCarrot thats bonkers

Ah didn't realise that was around now
I'll be honest if it wasn't for the odd few things I see around SE and stuff my wife drip feeds me I wouldn't have a clue about anything happening in the world

11:28 AM
@TheLethalCarrot it feels like that to me, but I'm the one who drip feeds my wife so, I guess it's a matter of scale

@AncientSwordRage I don't mean this to be rude, I'm just generally curious and I really don't know enough about it but do you feel hungry a lot during Ramadan? (FWIW I know next to nothing about it so don't really know when you eat or how much during)

@TheLethalCarrot it's not rude to ask at all, I appreciate your curiosity
I definitely feel hungry in the first 3-5 days, but after that the thing I notice most is tiredness
I'm up before sunrise for extra prayers and to squeeze in some breakfast before the sun is up even slightly, which is around 3.40 right now
If I miss that breakfast I might feel hungry later on in the day or not, but that's nothing unusal for me anyway :D

Oof. I do that a few times a year, doing it for a full month sounds rough.

I probably eat only a small amount less than outside of Ramadan. I break my fast with dates and maybe a small tomato or bit of cucumber. The I'll have a small sandwich after I've prayed. Then it's dinner before bed.
@Mithical oh? Health/religion/other...?

So you're not really a big eater anyway?

11:38 AM
@TheLethalCarrot I probably snack too much outside of ramadan

Also do you stay awake from 3.40 onwards during or is it up for food/prayers and then back to bed for a bit?

You become really aware of how much you want to eat vs need to eat
@TheLethalCarrot back to bed

@AncientSwordRage religion (Judaism)

so I might get ~3-5 hours sleep throughout (thats not normal though, other people have much better sleep routines than I do)
@Mithical cool!

@AncientSwordRage That's my problem but I boredom snack, id I'm on my own with nothing to do I'll just eat

11:39 AM
@TheLethalCarrot yup!

Aye, no wonder you're tired then

@Mithical I don't know enough about Judaism if I'm honest

That's me but with probably all religions

I try to educate myself about other religions but I don't know nearly enough either

@Mithical same: I'm looking into Ta'anit now, on wikipedia
Yeah I definitly don't know enough

Q: Children's fantasy book with black and gold "urchins" (hedgehogs)

A. B.I remember a fantasy book in which one of the things was magic hedgehogs, only they called them urchins. There were ones with gold spines and ones with black spines, and the black ones' spines were poisonous. Unfortunately, can't remember anything else about the book, or if I can I've forgotten...

Hello!

I am usually more productive in the evening than the morning. Been a pattern my entire life, no matter how hard I'm trying to sleep well.

Same.

2:09 PM
My problem yesterday was that some of the services the test depended on seemed to get less reliable as the day went on.
@fez Squonk!

I'm usually more productive in the morning and it wears off as the day goes on. Though I'll often solve a problem in my head as I get home because of the break from thinking about it

@TheLethalCarrot I really, really miss that about my ride home from work at the end of the day. Breaks the routine, your surface attention is caught up in the process of commuting, get a bit of a bump to the heart rate, and by the time you get home your subconscious has had a chance to chew over the problem without your conscious mind bombarding it with trivia.

Yeah it does help, I'm in the office once a week at least so I still get it a bit just not as much as before

And I've been so bad about trying to replace that with an end-of-day ride; it's just too much of a pain to get the bike out, get kitted up, just to ride in a short loop back to home.

We take Stella out not long after I finish work but it doesn't really replace the car ride quite the same

Q: What's the first appearance of monomolecular wire or nanofilament (extremely thin, superstrong, hence cuts almost anything)?

Zeiss IkonThere's a pivotal scene in Larry Niven's short story, "A Hole in Space" in which Beowulf Shaeffer uses a length of Sinclair monofilament -- a monomolecular wire as strong as molecular bonds and only a few atoms thick -- to defeat the villain. His novel, Ringworld, had "shadow square wire" that k...

Q: Is Martin Gibson using dry humor in 'The Sands of Mars' by Arthur C. Clarke when he is speaking 'solemnly' in this dialogue?

Matthew Christopher BartshIs Gibson being completely serious when he is described as speaking 'solemnly' or was he being ironic i.e. saying it with sham solemnity in the following bit of the dialogue? Is there any indication anywhere in the book that spitting really is the approved solution? "Couldn't you spit your way to...
