Aye, not a time critical thing anyway
Logic, please take your time with edits and reviews in general. I've seen it quite a lot where you'll make the most basic edit and complete the review straight away and then come back to it over time and fix your poor initial first edit/review. Take your time, make sure you do everything you can and then submit the edit and/or complete the review. These things aren't a race

Q: Is the Fairy Godmother from Shrek homophobic?

Alex DownsI’m asking, because she called the Big Bad Wolf “some gender confused wolf,” and if so, does she believe that GAY people don’t live happily ever after?

@AncientSwordRage What's up?

@LogicDictates check out the comments above ^

@TheLethalCarrot this one

@TheLethalCarrot if it wasn't so badly worded, you might have a question there "Is the Fairy Godmother calling the Big Bad Wolf 'gender confused' meant to indicate to the audience she is bigoted and unaccepting of people who don't conform to societal norms?"
it's a good way they show she's a nasty piece of work, and explains how she behaves later on (it does make it a very simple question to answer)
but that question is a bit of a car crash

I think you've got to remember the time period when it came out though, it wasn't necessarily the same as today. Back then it was probably more of a joke in poor taste than anything more like if the same joke was made today

@TheLethalCarrot I think so too, but it does show she's fine making poor taste jokes of that sort

Agree, it's just the impact to the audience was less in 2004 than today
I'm not sure if you'd get away with it today

Q: What manga is this

I'd like to Be immortalThe main character creates a VR game where you can create different worlds, she creates her own world based on a novel she created, then she gets stuck inside unable to leave the game

@TheLethalCarrot If you're referring my failure to add a story ID tag to a post earlier to today, I probably would've fixed it, since I was rereading the post right after editing it, but you edited it again seconds later, so I didn't get the chance. In general, I think I've improved alot when it comes to making sure all the correct tags are present during edits. I slipped up once today, but I believe it's been weeks or months since the last time that happened.

@LogicDictates It's not a problem of not doing something, you always fix everything eventually. It's more of a case of you fix one thing, edit, another, edit etc. If you spent more time initially you'd, hopefully, fix everything in one go. That would lessen the need for others to come in and fix the tags for example
As a third party it just seems like you race the review/edit and then take a second look and fix what you missed instead of taking the time to do that the first time round

In general, try and edit once. That means taking time to read through everything first

12:35 PM
@TheLethalCarrot I have a longstanding habit of making multiple edits to posts, be it when I'm reviewing posts, or posting answers, or posting messages on other sites. I usually make sure all the necessary tags are present and accounted for with the initial edit though. The subsequent edits are generally done to fix typos and/or improve grammar.
And in that regard, it's pretty common for typos/poor grammar not to be fixed in initial reviews. I've seen you fail you fix typos, and other users as well. Never bothered to call anyone out on it though, as I see editing as a collaborative effort, rather than expecting one person to catch everything the first time round.

@LogicDictates if the reason some things are missed is haste, then that's something that can be fixed. If it's a genuine error, then as you said, that's completely understandable

1:01 PM
@AncientSwordRage Ultimately, all failures to fix typos come down to haste to some degree. Either that, or an insufficient grasp of the English language, but I'm pretty sure it's the amount of time spent on the edit that's root cause of these oversights 99% of the time.

@LogicDictates Pretty much what ASR said. It's fine to miss things, we're human after all, but making multiple passes just because really feels like something to be avoided. Especially so if you're only going to immediately re-edit the post

@TheLethalCarrot What's the problem with multiple quick edits? Like I said, I usually get the tags sorted on the first edit. Subsequents edits typically involve cleaning up typos/grammar, and improving question titles. I could not bother with those subsequent edits, but I don't think that would benefit the site.

Right, but why do multiple edits in the first place when you can do it in one? It's always better to try and edit all at once than multiple because then a) it lessens the chance for edit conflicts if someone decides to edit a half edited post b) creates less confusion c) also if you edit once then the bump to the homepage (if someone has it open) is correct, otherwise everything is knocked out of sync d) multiple quick edits mean someone on the post has to keep reloading it rather than once
If you're doing it all at once anyway, I don't see the need in the first place to split it into multiple edits

Also, if it's coming out of the review queue (which it won't always be) it ends up making it work better with how the system handles completed reviews
@TheLethalCarrot these are good points as well

1:20 PM
And you should always take your time with reviews anyway, importantly FPs/LAs as you're there to on board a new user
It's important to do everything before moving on

@TheLethalCarrot When I edit posts, I often end up doing a more thorough job than other users. I try to fix all typos, and improve all the grammatical issues I see, without fundamentally altering the meaning of a given statement. I probably edit more question titles than the average user as well.
This all takes time though, several minutes potentially, and more than once in the past, someone else has performed a less thorough edit before I could complete my longer one. In those instances, I'm unable to complete my edit without refreshing the page, and even then, I don't like to wipe out another user's edits by simply copying and pasting mine over theirs, so I then have to spend more time adjusting my edit to fit around theirs.
To avoid this scenario, I've developed a habit of making a series of smaller edits in quick succession, rather than spending two or three minutes trying to do everything in one go. I could just be less thorough, and make a single quick edit and leave it at that, but as I said, I don't think the site would benefit from that.

Q: Movie about a woman that hits a dog/rat with umbrella

Pratik Dilip AherI remember watching this bizarre movie from which there was a scene where an old lady start stomping down a rat/dog with her umbrella. The movie itself was really weird and bizarre.

@LogicDictates I hate how that happens, but it does

@LogicDictates FWIW I don't thin anybody is complaining about the quality of your edits
@LogicDictates It's annoying but it happens, in my opinion by doing multiple quick edits you're increasing that likelihood that is happens to someone else though. Great, your 10 edits got through but in the process you blocked someone with a full edit from submitting it 10 times
@LogicDictates And also no one is asking you to be less thorough, there's a middle ground which you're discounting from even being a possibility: do it all at once to the same quality standard

1:38 PM
@LogicDictates the times it happens, I either succeed to their edit, or incorporate it into my own (or edit their edit)

fez
2:20 PM
@AncientSwordRage Chaotic Evil would be to rollback and then just continue like nothing happened mwahahaha

@TheLethalCarrot Define "quality standard". I frequently see edits by other users that do little more than fix the tags, leaving multiple other issues with posts unaddressed. I assume these are considered acceptable edits too, since I haven't seen anyone else called out for them. If they don't meet the required standard, then more people need to be called out for this, because it happens all the time.

@LogicDictates ideally they'd do full edits, but just editing tags is ok as it doesn't behave the same way in the system

@LogicDictates I think you're missing the point. No one is complaining about the quality of your edits, my complaint is that you do multiple quick small edits rather than doing it all together. And ideally other users would too do full edits rather than half arsed ones

2:37 PM
@TheLethalCarrot I don't believe there's anything half-arsed about performing an edit, reviewing your work, and then following up with another edit if need be. It's only half-arsed if you perform one incomplete edit and leave it at that.

Again, I didn't say it is half arsed but either I'm not explaining myself well or you're not reading what I've written properly because you seem to be missing the point in everything I've said so I'll leave it there

3:10 PM
@TheLethalCarrot The problem is that you're effectively asking me to put myself at greater risk of having my edits interrupted, without explaining why it's necessary, or beneficial to the site to do that.

I've given like 5 reasons...

@TheLethalCarrot Can you list them then?

@TheLethalCarrot There's a whole bunch here...

"Here" meaning where? Further up the page?

I replied to the message, click the little arrow

3:39 PM
a) Trying to correct alot of issues in one edit will not reduce the chances of edit conflicts. It just means that I'm more likely to have my own edits interrupted, rather than potentially interrupting someone else's. And in that regard, anyone who spends a long time on a single edit is exposing themselves to that risk, so it's better for everyone to make initial edits fairly quickly, and follow up if need be.
b) What do you mean by "confusion"?
c) What do you mean by "everything is knocked out of sync"?
d) Nobody has to keep refreshing a page multiple times just because a post is receiving multiple quick edits. I'd agree if it's the OP making edits, because if I'm trying to ID a story, then I want to be up to date on everything the OP has to add. But if it's just another user fixing typos and grammar, then there's no need to stay absolutely up to date on all of that. Just leave it a few minutes, and then refresh the page.

@LogicDictates then it becomes a case of who is quickest not who makes the best edit
@LogicDictates bumping a post multiple times for what is essentially one set of changes makes it looks like there's multiple things going on
@LogicDictates but how do you know someone is finished?

@LogicDictates You don't know who's made the edit unless you refresh the page though

@AncientSwordRage Only if a person makes one quick edit and leaves it at that.

@LogicDictates If everyone spent time and only made full edits (to their best of their ability), conflict is lowered because there's fewer edits made... sure time spent is increased but multiple quick edits also means multiple interruptions. If I were to make one long edit and submit when someone has made a small one I have to try and submit it again, then I could be interrupted again because they've made another small one etc. etc.

@LogicDictates you could make a quick edit, I then go in to fix the rest, and you then make another quick edit, I have to be super quick to get my edit it
@TheLethalCarrot yeah this

3:49 PM
It's happened to me in the past and it's far more annoying to be constantly interrupted by someone making several minor changes spread out than someone trying their best to make one full edit
FWIW per the help page:
> Tiny, trivial edits are discouraged - try to make the post significantly better when you edit, correcting all problems that you observe.
2
You're not making tiny trivial edits overall but several all mixed in together which is somewhat similar

@TheLethalCarrot I think very similar

Oh, another reason, say others are doing the same thing then you could do alternative edits (rather than getting them all in by one person in the grace period) which means a messy revision history and can annoy the OP for constant notifications etc.
@LogicDictates IF person 1 does a small edit and person 2 a long edit, person 2 will be working on an out of date version to what person 1 is which could mean person 1s changes are removed completely

@AncientSwordRage You can't know for sure when someone else is finished. But if someone hasn't followed up an edit with another one shortly after, it probably means they weren't planning to. Ultimately, there's no way to be certain of avoiding a clash in edits, but it helps if you don't attempt edits immediately after someone else's.

@LogicDictates if people make full single edits that is safe to do

@TheLethalCarrot This is only true if people are in the habit of performing edits very quickly after someone else has done so. Personally, if I see that someone else has just performed an edit, I don't rush in to perform another one, even if the edit appears incomplete.

3:58 PM
Not necessarily, take a new post, for example. During times when several prolific editors are around, you can all be editing the post without knowing the other is. Sure not editing a freshly edited post might be a way to avoid clashes but it doesn't mean you'll avoid themk altogether

@AncientSwordRage Why rush in to perform an edit right after someone else though? You've both emphasised that editing isn't a race, and this flies in the face of that.

FWIW though I think people are usually only likely to make a small "oh woops I missed that" edit after a previous one in general. Very few people make lots of small edits side by side

@LogicDictates I think it's more likely that you'll start editing without realising someone's made the first edit

@TheLethalCarrot If you know that someone is in the habit of performing a series of quick edits, why not just let them get on with it, rather than trying to persist with an edit you were working on?

@AncientSwordRage Aye, that or "oh look they missed this, I'll just fix it"

4:01 PM
@LogicDictates because that is not the guidance the site has?
11 mins ago, by TheLethalCarrot
> Tiny, trivial edits are discouraged - try to make the post significantly better when you edit, correcting all problems that you observe.

@LogicDictates It's not also a one person problem, several people could make consecutive trivial edits

what you wrote reads a "If you know someone does a thing that goes against best/accepted practice, why not just let them do that"?

My initial edits are typically on par with those commonly performed by other users, i.e. fixing tags, and any glaring typos which immediately leap out at me. If you consider my initial edits insufficient, then you ought to be calling alot more people out for the same reason.

@LogicDictates I don't think we're saying all of your edits are bad, or all of your edits are too hasty/insufficent...? Are we @TheLethalCarrot?

@LogicDictates People just making a small trivial edit and moving on is sort of a problem but it's not really what I'm talking about... and also you can't really fight it and I don't think you should

4:07 PM
@TheLethalCarrot If I'm doing a series of quick edits, I do try to get them done in under five minutes, so that it doesn't create more than one entry in the revision history.

I think I've tried to emphasise at several points that I'm not saying Logic's edits are bad or insufficient. The point I've been trying to discuss is the way in which the edits are made not the overall outcome
@LogicDictates Which is great unless others do the same thing at the same time to the same post which is what that point was about

Does it help to think about it like game theory? The best move is to work together with others and not make <5 min edits to rush them in

@LogicDictates "a series of quick edits", all on the same post, isn't the way edits should be gone about. If you're going to edit something, make your edits and be done with it; otherwise, you run into other people editing in between your edits, bumping the post multiple times, etc. What's the point of making a series of small edits and then rushing instead of getting it all done at once with no rush?

@Mithical The impression I get is to avoid being interrupted yourself, which doesn't seems like a great reason

@TheLethalCarrot Yes, but if you know a particular user generally does a good job with edits, then there's no reason to keep persisting with an edit you'd already begun yourself.
@AncientSwordRage If another user actually made a full single edit, there'd be no need to perform another edit at all. If you see a need to perform another one, you must think their work was incomplete.

4:15 PM
How do I know you've spotted everything I have? How do I know when you're finished? How do I know this one time you aren't just doing a single quick tag fix or the like because you're in a rush?
FWIW I do think there could be some improvements made to the editing interface to avoid conflicts

@TheLethalCarrot Some clashes are inevitable, but not rushing in to edit right after someone else (especially if that user is known to be in the habit of performing multiple quick edits) lowers the odds of that happening.

@LogicDictates I can make a "full" edit for everything that I can see, doesn't mean I've fixed everything though. ASR's point is though that if someone made a "full" edit then they likely think they've got everything and are unlikely to edit again. If someone makes lots of small edits that goes away and the uncertainty sticks around

@TheLethalCarrot Quite possibly, but highly active users like us will tend to get a feel for how other regular users operate. And if you know someone tends to make a series a quick edits, it doesn't make sense to attempt an edit seconds after they've made one, and then act surprised if a clash occurs.

And what about users that aren't highly active? I might be aware of your current editing habits, but random user212418 isn't

@LogicDictates putting the onus on everybody else to know when it's safe to edit is unfair
5

4:24 PM
I have no idea what anyone else's editing habits are.

I only know Logic's because it's unusual and I'm probably one of the most active users
And Logic is also pretty active, I don't really know anyone elses

@TheLethalCarrot even then I'd say Logic's not 100% consistent between long full edits and multiple short ones?

@AncientSwordRage Again, my initial edits are on par with those commonly performed by other users. If they are not up to best/accepted practice, then more users should be called out for this. If my initial edits don't conflict with best/accepted practice, then there's no need to make reference to that.

Probably not... I'll rephrase. It's something I've noticed happening several times but I wouldn't know if it happened all the time or not

@LogicDictates When I noticed it I do call them out on it

4:28 PM
Are those other users you're referring to going back and making several other small edits afterwards? Or are they fixing some obvious things and moving on? Not everyone has the time to do full edits.

That said there have been plenty of discussions in this room about trying to get people to make complete edits
Me and Mith have had the discussion in the past, for example, when bumping old posts to make tag edits
But whether or not someone should make a complete edit and someone making several quick successive edits to combine into a complete edit are different discussions

@TheLethalCarrot So you don't think you should do anything about other users making a small trivial edits and then moving on. But I need to be called out making a quick edit and then following it up if need be? That doesn't seem altogether consistent to me.

@LogicDictates ignore what other users do for the moment

@TheLethalCarrot You need to be clearer on this point, because this sounds like a fudge to me. Are you saying that my initial edits are generally bad?

@LogicDictates I think when they say edits plural TLC means edits to the same post in rapid succession, not your edits across all posts in general

4:38 PM
Barring the edit that got me to say the initial thing (which was solely a title typo fox when there were glaring problems: missing tags, wrong tags for example) all edits of yours I’ve seen have been good

I have to go, but if this isn't resolved I or @Randal'Thor can follow up later

@TheLethalCarrot This realistically isn't going to be an issue for many users, only those who are highly active in the review queues, like you and I. And since we are both so active, you ought to have a sense of how I tend to go about performing reviews, and vice-versa.
This whole discussion stems from you wanting to talk to me about performing multiple quick edits, rather than longer individual ones, so you're clearly aware of my tendency to do that. Ergo, it doesn't make sense for you to edit a post seconds after me, and then be surprised if a clash occurs.

@LogicDictates I think everyone but you has identified that "performing multiple quick edits" is problematic, and asking the entire stack to adjust working around your preference is not acceptable
right I really have to go now
I should have gone 15 minutes ago :D

@AncientSwordRage The vast majority of edits appear to have been done in less <five minutes, especially those done in the review queues.
@Mithical Spending multiple minutes on editing first posts or late answers puts you at high risk of having your edits interrupted, and potentially rendered pointless.

fez
@LogicDictates What's wrong with that? The job has been done, the post is better, that's the goal

4:49 PM
@AncientSwordRage Nice job calling me out on transcript lurking :-P
@LogicDictates I think comments like this highlight the wrong viewpoint from which you're approaching this: as if the main goal is to get "your" edits and avoid being interrupted, rather than to get the post in a good shape no matter who does it.
It's often happened, for instance, that I'm in a new ID question editing everything and then a banner comes down to show that @TheLethalCarrot just edited the post since I started, and when I click to show the new version he clearly did everything that I was planning to. My response is, at most, a "ha ha jinx" comment in chat before moving on.

@TheLethalCarrot There's no way to be certain whether someone else is about to submit an edit or not, but if you attempt edits seconds after someone else, you increase the odds of a clash occurring. Is there any particular reason why you feel a need to edit a post right after someone else?

@LogicDictates because it still needs editing?
@Randal'Thor I just saw you were pingable 😅

@LogicDictates Yes: if someone did an edit that only fixes half the issues with a post, I'll assume they half-arsed it (to borrow Carrot's phrase) and go to edit the other half.
Unless it's you, apparently, in which case that's not a safe assumption. But you can't expect other people to change thir behaviour to accommodate one user's unusual practices.

@TheLethalCarrot You can never be certain that someone isn't about to edit a post that you want to edit. In terms of whether a given individual is likely to perform follow-up edits though, it's different strokes for different folks. Some people are perfectionists. Others are happy to do as little as they can get away with. Others fall on a spectrum in-between. In my case, you clearly know about my tendency to follow up my edits.

I’m off for a bit, dinner, need to walk Stella etc. Leaving the comment so I know where to read from and reply from if need be :)

5:04 PM
@LogicDictates That last line shouldn't be - and isn't - a given.

@TheLethalCarrot There aren't that many random users performing the initial edits on first posts and late answers. Almost none, in fact.
@AncientSwordRage The point about knowing my habits is specifically addressed to TheLethalCarrot, not users in general.
@Mithical Sure, because you're not very active in the review queues. As such, I certainly don't expect you to know my habits. TheLethalCarrot is another matter entirely. This whole conversation arose from him wanting to discuss my tendency to perform a series of quick edits, rather than a single comprehensive one.

I'm not currently very active in the queues, true (due to a lack of time and availability of a computer). However, when I do venture there for old times' sakes, it shouldn't be an issue if you've edited something, and then I edit it - but right now it looks like that's more or less likely to cause an edit clash.

@AncientSwordRage It's changed over time. In the past, I regularly peformed longer individual edits, but my edits were interrupted alot, so I began to scale back the initial edits, and then follow up if need be. I think I've always been inclined to perform more edits overall than the average user though. The stats on this site likely bear that out.

You are on the first page of the all-time top editors, yes.

@AncientSwordRage I need some clarification here as to whether my initial edits to first posts and late answers are considered acceptable by the standards of this site or not. Neither you nor TheLethalCarrot have been very clear on that specific point.
@TheLethalCarrot How do you know if someone else performing an incomplete edit and then not following up is a result of them not having enough time, or just not being bothered to put in more effort, or just having a lower standard for what constitutes a 'complete' edit?

Q: Was Richard Bremmer the voice of Lord Voldemort in Goblet of Fire?

Alex DownsI know that Richard Bremmer played Voldemort in Philosopher’s Stone and in flashback scenes in Deathly Hallows Part 2. But his Harry Potter Wiki page identifies him as the voice of Lord Voldemort before his return in Goblet of Fire. So DID he voice Voldemort before he came back? Edit: Never mind,...

Side note: Image descriptions for comic panels are pretty time-consuming, but, much like book-cover descriptions, help with future people searching for those panels (/covers) with words, once the description is indexed by search engines.

@TheLethalCarrot They're different discussions, yes, but related ones. If it's considered important to keep the overall number of edits down, then quick edits in general should be discouraged.
@AncientSwordRage That's extremely difficult, and I'm not sure why I should ignore that.
@AncientSwordRage It's important to me to establish whether my initial edits are generally acceptable, not counting the follow-ups. If they are, then I can resolve this issue by not bothering with the follow-ups.

5:51 PM
@LogicDictates Once again, I think you're coming at this the wrong way. Instead of searching for strict rules and boundaries on what's "acceptable by the standards of this site", why not just take some friendly advice on board? Nobody is threatening to ban you for breaking restrictions, just suggesting ways to improve how you interact with the site.

@TheLethalCarrot Can you specify which message that is? I'm guessing it's the one you edited seconds after me, in order to add a story ID tag. I believe my slip-ups on tags are very rare in my initial edits these days, certainly in terms of ensuring that the ones that need to be there are. Admittedly, I am a bit fuzzy about which tags should be removed at times.

It was that post yes

@LogicDictates Is it really a choice between "one initial edit to fix as little as possible" and "lots of follow-up edits to fix a little thing each time"? What about the third option, of a single big edit to fix the things that need fixing, like most people do?

@AncientSwordRage The entire stack hasn't complained about my editing habits. One user complained, and others have chosen to support him, without necessarily having experienced the problems he's citing first-hand.

It's certainly fair enough if you don't have time to fix everything, or if you aren't sure which tags are needed - there's no responsibility for you to know everything about the site rules or to have all the time in the world. But it's a bit odd to stop making major edits just because you're worried they might be interrupted.

Q: Trying to find a Ranma 1/2 fanfic where they wind up in the real world

FuzzyBootsOne of those weird things that popped into my head. I read a Ranma 1/2 fanfic somewhere in the late 1990s to the early 2000s which had the cast somehow winding up in the "real world" that we live in, where they're fictional characters. Specifically, they showed up nearby a convention center, and ...

@fez If I haven't invested much time in an attempted edit, then I'm not bothered about someone else editing it first. If I've spent a couple of minutes meticulously editing a post though, then it's frustating to be blocked from submitting that edit by someone else submitting an edit first, especially a less thorough one.
Bear in mind, I'm not actually criticising anyone for interrupting any of my edits. The goal certainly is to improve the quality of the posts, and as long as that is achieved, it doesn't really matter who is performing the edits. I'm just explaining why I'm now inclined to make shorter edits, so that my edits aren't interrupted as often.
@Randal'Thor The same thing's happened to me on multiple occasions. I haven't strictly complained about that though. I've just pointed out that that I don't to keep spending so long on edits that my edits are likely to be interrupted. I want the freedom to perform a basic edit, and follow up if need be. Doesn't seem like that much to ask for.
Alternately, I'm also willing to not bother with the follow-ups, but I need clarification as to whether my initial edits are acceptable or not.
@AncientSwordRage The fact that a post could be improved by editing doesn't explain why it needs to be edited immediately, especially if you know someone has just edited it, and is in the habit of following their edits up.

6:22 PM
@LogicDictates I have complained too, but not in a way that singled you out. But it was because of your editing pattern.

@Randal'Thor I often follow up other users' edits myself. I don't generally feel an urgent rush to do it ASAP though.

@LogicDictates people don't often know, and shouldn't be expected to know

@Randal'Thor I'm not telling anyone to change their behaviour in regard to their editing practices. If any user wants to perform edits right after mine, that's entirely their choice. I'm just pointing out that I have a tendency to follow up my edits quickly, which may lead to editing clashes in some cases. How often, precisely, I have no idea.
@Mithical Have you encountered this problem personally?
@Randal'Thor It's important to establish whether my initial edits are acceptable, because that way, I can resolve this issue by not making any more edits soon after my initial ones. That seems like the cleanest solution to this particular issue.

6:43 PM
@LogicDictates FWIW this wasn’t really a complaint. More meant to be a friendly bit of advice

@TheLethalCarrot That kind of slip-up is very rare for me these days. At least, I think it is. Let me know if I'm wrong about that.

@LogicDictates And I repeat: why is your go-to solution to only make one short edit on each post to fix as little as possible, rather than to make big edits to fix everything that needs fixing even if it takes more time?
I'm not sure what you mean by "acceptable". It's not as if anyone is going to be site-banned for not fixing everything they could in edits, but all the feedback you're getting is that it's preferable to do one big edit fixing everything rather than either one small edit or a series of small edits.

@Randal'Thor Are you sure that I don't generally 'fix the things that need fixing' on my initial edits though? Are my initial edits generally inferior to those of the average reviewer?

Also I don't understand why this needs to be such a big issue. It started with a small piece of friendly advice from one community member to another, and snowballed into a massive back-and-forth discussion.
@LogicDictates I haven't gone through your edit history to check, but that seems to be what everyone in this conversation (including you) is saying. Unless I misunderstood, you're saying that there are often lots of things that need fixing but you want to perform a "basic edit" first and then follow up with a series of further small edits fixing things bit by bit.

6:58 PM
@Randal'Thor Odd, as in unusual? Sure. But then again, I don't think many extensive edits are actually performed in the review queues. I could be wrong about that, but from what I've seen (and I do look at revision histories), the large majority of reviews involve quick edits, or no edits. More extensive edits tend to be done outside of reviews.

7:09 PM
@DavidW As I recall, the last time that came up was a couple of months ago, and that was another example of a post being edited by someone else (you, in that case) literally seconds after I'd performed an edit. It shouldn't be assumed that if I missed a relevant tag edit the first time around, that I won't notice that oversight upon reviewing my edit, and fix it myself right afterward, if someone else doesn't beat me to it.
@AncientSwordRage I don't expect users in general to know my habits. That point was made in relation to TheLethalCarrot, who certainly is aware of that tendency.
@TheLethalCarrot You've suggested that the way I go about editing is somehow detrimental to the site. That certainly consistutes a complaint in my mind.
@Randal'Thor It's not about fixing as little as possible. It's about establishing whether my initial edits are generally reasonable or not. This discussion implies that I've been regularly performing substandard edits. I don't want that implication to be left hanging in the air, unresolved.

7:25 PM
If you're talking about a habit of performing a "basic edit" and then following up lots of other small edits to fix all the other things that should be fixed, surely that implies that your "initial edits" don't fix everything that should be fixed? I'm just using @logic here :-)

@Randal'Thor I mean 'acceptable' by the standards of the site; in the eyes of the mods, if you like. As for doing one big edit, I don't believe big edits are generally done in the review queues.

7:51 PM
@Randal'Thor I take pride in my work as an editor on this site. I invest more time in editing than the average user here, probably more than TheLethalCarrot, in fact. As such, I don't appreciate the implication that I'm actually doing a worse job than the average user, even just in respect to my initial edits.
@Randal'Thor I believe my initial edits are generally on par with those performed by others in the review queues. I like to perform follow-up edits not because I think I haven't done enough by the standards of this site, but because I'm a perfectionist to some degree, and don't like to leave any typos or grammatical issues unfixed. I'm pretty sure I'm fussier than the average user in that regard.

Q: Looking for a comic book where Batman said he would save Wonder Woman if he could only rescue one person

Shubham SurveI vaguely remember reading in a comic book where Batman said something along the lines of: If I could rescue one person, it would be Wonder Woman. Also, most probably it was followed by a panel showing Wonder Woman captured. The artwork seemed similar to JLA comics(?) Unfortunately, that is all...

@LogicDictates I don’t think anyone’s implied you’re a bad editor. In fact I think everyone has repeatedly said the opposite

8:32 PM
I don't believe anyone has actually said I'm a good editor. Most of the people involved in this discussion, like AncientSwordRage, Mithical, and Randal'Thor probably don't have a firm view on that one way or the other, since I doubt they've paid much attention to my editing history. They're just going by what's been stated here.
In respect to youself, you've given mixed signals. On the one hand, you've repeatedly denied accusing me of being a bad editor. On the other, you initiated this discussion by telling AncientSwordRage that I perform "poor initial first edit[s]/review[s]".

8:47 PM
I may have been a little bit swayed by the review/edit that prompted me to say something and so worded it a bit strongly and was talking generally but heavily influenced by that one case
I think the fact I’ve repeatedly said I think you’re edits are good (even if after they’ve all been done) should speak more than a comment right at the start

Q: Last Human living in a solar system where androids keep society going

QosmonautA short story I’d like to reread is about the last human, who lives in a solar system where each human is replaced by an android or human robot upon their death. @logic let's settle this. No one is saying your full, comprehensive edits are substandard. And no one is begrudging you for having missed a typo here and there. What we're calling you up on, is the behaviour where you deliberately make an initial, quick, basic edit without thoroughly checking.
We're calling you up on this because otherwise you're an excellent editor for this site. We know you make those basic, quick, initial edits based on you're reviewing behaviour, comments and even your own admissions. It sucks to have an edit interrupted, but it's not worth stressing over that so long as a single good edit is made. If they leave a mistake in, then you're free to 'finish'.
But please don't leave your own edits deliberately unfinished by making edits overly quickly just to avoid edit merger conflicts.

@TheLethalCarrot Even now, you're equivocating over whether my initial edits are subpar or not. If you think they are, please say so. If you think they're not, please say so as well. The ambiguity in your statements is very frustrating.

Q: Are there any realistic depictions of Superman-like powers?

userHard sci-fi depicts technology according to the known laws of physics. Is there anything similar for comics? I'm particularly interested in Superman-like beings with super strength/durability and speed.

@AncientSwordRage I agree that TheLethalCarrot isn't saying that the end result of all my edits is subpar. He has clearly suggested that my initial edits are "poor" though, and he's still equivocating over it now.
If I'm ultimately doing an 'excellent' job as an editor, I think I should be cut some slack in respect to performing incremental edits, rather than addressing every issue I'd like to address in one go. The way I've been editing lately is the way I'm most comfortable doing it. If I'm pressured to perform edits in a way that I find stressful, I'm likely to do less editing as a result, as it simply won't be a pleasant experience anymore.

@LogicDictates I’m not going to say all your initial edits are amazing but neither am I saying they’re all terrible. Some are at either end of the scale but the majority are decent

9:41 PM
This discussion has now continued for ... ten hours.

@TheLethalCarrot I don't expect you to say my initial edits are amazing. I don't think they're amazing, but I don't think they're subpar compared to those performed on average here. The majority of edits performed in reviews are neither especially good nor especially bad. They're just okay, and I maintain that my initial edits are on that same level.

10:09 PM
@Randal'Thor and if it hadn't been yet another crazy day at work I'd have enjoyed taking part in it. I've read the whole thing and have my opinion on it, but right now I'm just tired. Not that anyone has actually asked for my opinion precisely, but this is the kind of meta discussion I usually enjoy, and have actually missed for some time
Actually I miss pretty much the long mind-twisting conversations here, and spending time on the site on general. I miss you folks. Life's taking way too much a toll these days 😴 (and spending several weeks basically without hands doesn't help either, but that's a story for another day)

I hope stuff settles down soon 'nuff so I can come back and not just lurk around.
Ah well - right now what's itching me is that I can't quite determine whether you come from a software/computer science field of any kind, @LogicDictates? (If you don't mind me asking)

Refresh yourself, give yourself as much TLC as you need (no, not you, Carrot), and know that this room will still be here whenever you're ready to fully jump back in.
And when you say "the long mind-twisting conversations", we know you mean @Alex :-P

10:27 PM
@Randal'Thor I didn't know that abbreviation, and I got really confused there :-) eh, not that I don't want to, rather that between the work, the health, the family, the climate, the pandemic and the boring seasonal food, it's not a matter of me giving myself some time 😅 pretty much like everyone else on the planet, though.
@Randal'Thor eh, partly yes, but you and TLC and Mith and ASR and SQB and Napoleon and the whole gang do take part in these :p

10:50 PM
@Randal'Thor Guilty as charged.
It has indeed been too long since one of those.

@JackBNimble the link will be in the email I think?

Also, just as Mike bequeathed me all his rep with his dying breathe, he also wanted me to have any and all future swag that would have been coming to him.
I haven't seen an email, not sent yet?

@JackBNimble I'm guessing not

Q: The movie Seconds (Frankenheimer/Rock Hudson): Was the procedure purely medical?

releseabeOr was there some "magical" aspect?
