Q: Bluebear at the Nocturnal Academy

OutstandingBillBluebear turns out not to be the last of his kind, so why does Prof. Nightingale admit him to the Nocturnal Academy? The reader doesn't know at the point where Bluebear is admitted that he's actually one of a race of colourful bears, but surely a nocturnomath would know. Or does his uniqueness ...

Q: Question about Opportunity Knocks (1990)

blazemai3In "Opportunity Knocks," Mona enters the house of her son in order to leave a welcome note for her son's housesitter, who is supposed to arrive there the next day. She brings with her the keys to the house in order to leave them for the housesitter who is arriving the next day. To her surprise,...

Q: Did Palpatine have the very same powers as Darth Plagueis?

Better not tellIn the Senate, and later again in his office, chancellor Palpatine tells Anakin how Darth Plagueis taught him everything before being slain by Palpatine. Does this include the power to save lives and to make midi-chlorians create life? Palpatine later tells Anakin (now Darth Vader) that only Plag...

Q: Another question about Opportunity Knocks (1990)

blazemai3At the end of the movie, it is clearly not Carvey getting run into by the car, but it is clearly a stunt double, as he has a different style of hair than Carvey. However, even after the take with the car accident, the stunt double is still seen lying on the road in front of the car, even after t...

Q: Is there a Stan Lee reference in WandaVision?

TheLethalCarrotI know that Stan Lee's final cameo was in Avengers: Endgame. However, I would assume that the MCU is still going to honour him in some way: whether it be some clear cut reference or something a little more minor. Was there a reference to Stan Lee in WandaVision?

Q: What is the game on the Shrek DVD like that allows you to rescue Fiona?

May FieldA while back, I asked a question on the Shrek Headscratchers page on TV Tropes and someone answered beginning with the following sentence: A game on the DVD only allows you to rescue Fiona. What is this DVD game? How do you play it? Is it like the Dating Game parody that the Mirror does in Shre...

Q: How did Asajj Ventress hack Savage Opress?

Harley Quinn If you look at this video, Asajj Ventress hacked Savage Opress merely by touching his head. This is more impressive than Jedi Mind Tricks. But, how did she do it? Is this some Sith power as she was trained in Sith arts by Dooku himself? This is surprising because ...

@Marvin Uncharacteristically I'm trying to avoid spoilers on this one

My answer at least probably contains potential spoilers to the later episodes...
It's a good show, I certainly enjoyed it

@TheLethalCarrot it feels like spoilers are even more damning for this show than normal

Aye, part of the draw is seeing everything unfold bit by bit and the mystery of it... though it should still be enjoyable knowing what happens

@TheLethalCarrot bear in mind I still haven't seen End Game (though I have a fairly good idea of what happens)

12:02 PM
If you know what happens in Endgame it shouldn't be a problem... you only really need to know the gist of Endgame. Infinity War and some of the prior films are more important.
Though I'd probably recommend watching Endgame first anyway

@TheLethalCarrot hmm ok

Q: Animated movie where a boy tries to climb beams/poles connected to a heaven-like floating island

KevinThere is this movie I saw with my dad back when I was still small (like 13 years ago or something). It's a relatively old animated movie, probably Japanese but can't remember to be honest. What I remember about the movie is that the main character is a young cyborg boy and he is living in a futur...

Ameet SharmaI don't understand how/why Mccoy would be able to help with the torpedo setup. He's a doctor not an engineer.

3:48 PM
@JackBNimble Haven't you seen the robocop documentary?

I saw Chappie.
Turn killer robot police into petty car jackers.
Also this, mashable.com/video/…. It is all fun and games until that robot starts building walls out of people.

@JackBNimble I need to watch that

It was okay, it wasn't what I expected.

@JackBNimble did you expect a chapstick applying robot?

I think I went in knowing almost nothing about the movie, other than it had a robot.

Q: 90's dark knight cartoon

user137850Help me identify a 90's gothic cartoon. All I can remember are three main characters. One of them was a dark knight summoned from his grave in order to kill a warrior in every episode. This warrior was helped by a wizard/priest. The whole theme of the animation was really dark. As much as I can r...

Q: Why are the Cat and Anodos, in MacDonald’s Phantastes, both tortured with electric shocks?

ferjsoto42yahoocomNear the end of Chapter 3 of Phantastes the flower fairies get hold of a cat and proceed to forcefully and violently “remove” electrical sparks from the the feline: ...by this time the party which had gone towards the house, rushed out again, shouting and screaming with laughter. @AncientSwordRage No, the Slumdog Millionaire guy, a.k.a. the guy from The Man Who Knew Infinity.
(That would be Dev Patel, who was also in Lion and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.)

@DavidW YES
I knew it was a 'hit' film, even thought chappie was slated to not be a popular film
I love when more successful/famous actors take on smaller/more ambitious movies

4:19 PM
Well Blomkamp also managed to get Hugh Jackman and Sigourney Weaver for Chappie; his success with District 9 must have helped.

oh true, I forgot they were in there (in fact I'm fairly sure I never knew SW was in there)

I never saw either of those movies, life of Pi or slumdog Millionaire

Both reasonable movies, though I wasn't as enthusiastic about them as others.
Life of Pi looked amazing, but I found the story a bit meh. (I had the same reaction to the book.) But then I've never been a big fan of works that take the real world and throw in a few lumps of random magic, so you really shouldn't go by my reaction.

4:48 PM
@DavidW agreed
the line at the end made me think... I'd have much rather heard the real story

Q: Was there any "official" word on the Inkheart film trilogy?

SkoobaThe Inkheart trilogy was pretty popular in the early 2000's, at popular enough that the author, Cornelia Funke, sold the film rights to all three books to New Line Cinema. The first book was adapted and a film was released in 2008. It was barely a financial success (making $62M on a $60M budget)....

Q: Chronological order of books and comics in the Alien/Aliens franchise

WalkingDistanceI would like to read the following stories in chronological order, according to story events. I am not sure if they are standalone stories, or meant to be read in a particular order. 7:13 PM
@DavidW I know right

Yesterday, arg. I know that the REST model is that if you ask for something and it's not there, you get back a 404. The trouble is that translating that into code, 404 is technically an error.
So, in a case where it is not an unexpected condition that the resource doesn't exist (it's transient, and may have been handled by a different workflow), you have a try {} catch (NotFoundException nf) { return null; }
Which is ugly, but kind of enforced by the architecture.
Except that the client seems to have a number of developers who believe that if an error is thrown it must be logged.
So instead you have ... catch (NotFoundException nf) { LOGGER.warn("was not found", nf); return null; }
So of course the logs are polluted with all kinds of completely expected stack traces.

Then don't log it?

7:31 PM
You'd think so, wouldn't you? But I seem to be unable to convince them...

Q: Animated TV show of unique cars that fought robots

JoeI remember watching an animated show during my childhood(I was born 2004 so must've been around 2008-2014). Q: Why did this character kill Sparky?

Q: 1970s novel about computer hackers extorting a city

Ken ShirriffI'm trying to find the name of a novel I read in maybe 1975 where an evil hacker was taking control of a city's computers. I think he was doing this to extort money from the city. Q: What is the name of Stark's element in the MCU?

Q: Why was everything hexagonal?

MBEllisIn WandaVision, the hexagonal shape comes up a lot, and there seems to be a specific reason for it, as we can see Jimmy writing it on the board. @Marvin Hexagons are the bestagons

10:47 PM
On 3 regular polygons tesselate: triangles, squares and hexagons. Squares are square; they're boring. They are the undead horse of tessellation. Triangles are too busy. Stare at a field tessellated with triangles and you'll see moire patterns and get a headache. Hexagons are where it's at. All the cool kids (and bees) do hexagons.
