Q: Had Darth Sidious foreseen that Jar Jar Binks would provide assistance to Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, and Queen Amidala on the planet Naboo?

user57467Using the Force, Darth Sidious could often foresee many things or events that would take place in the future. In Return of the Jedi, he had foreseen Luke Skywalker coming to see Darth Vader to see if he could turn him back to the Light Side. In regards to Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace,...

Q: Looking for: Future, dystopian, virus & vaccine, medical check, government agency killing people

Baard KopperudI'm looking for... something! I'm honestly not sure if it's a book, radio play, TV-series or movie - but I think it's probably a book or radio play. It's set in a bit of a dystopian future. A few decades ago, a terrible decease killed many people (I assume painfully and drawn out), but eventual...

Q: Manhua about a guy being reincarnated with an invincible domain system

AhhGeezRickI read this manhua a few weeks ago and had it bookmarked but one of my friends used my laptop and did something, I remember it being about this guy who was reincarnated as some beggar I think in a temple and he gets a system that makes him invincible within a certain range I read it recently so I...

Q: What was the extent of Howard Stark's involvement in the Manhattan Project?

Peter NielsenIn Iron Man (2008), Tony (or maybe Obediah, I don't remember) says that Howard Stark worked on the Manhattan Project. If I'm not mistaken, the Manhattan Project was the Atomic Bomb; what was the extent of Howard Stark's involvement with the production of the atomic bomb during the Manhattan Proje...

Q: How did Leto II conquer the Other Memories?

fbenceIn Children of Dune, unlike Alia, Leto II is able to command his Other Memories. What did he do differently or how did he do it?

@DavidW I want to create a sort of weekly report with things that are happening in the American s-f/fantasy (for starters) and wondering how to keep track of it. That's why I'm searching for books and trends :-) Ofcourse, I plan to automatize it :-)
Anyone with an account on Outdoors SE want to leave a comment on this answer dropping a link to this question I just asked? Pretty sure we're the right site to answer the (tangential to the main Outdoors.SE query) question they're wondering about.

Q: Why did it take so long for people to be able to start the spice-cycle on other planets?

fbenceIn the beginning, only Arrakis has worms. Already in Dune Messiah somebody captures a worm and by Children of Dune it seems pretty common knowledge, that worms evolve from sandtrouts. In the last two book of the series (Heretics and Chapterhouse) it seems to be a pretty easy thing to move some tr...

Q: How was this shot of River Tam on the ceiling managed in Serenity?

Rand al'ThorThere's a scene in the Firefly film Serenity where we see River Tam clinging to the ceiling like a giant lizard: Over on the Outdoors Stack Exchange, there's some discussion, in ChrisH's answer and comments thereon, about how this scene was filmed: whether Summer Glau (who trained as a ballerin...

Q: Why does the Enterprise-D use such a silly plan in The Outcast?

einpoklumIn Star Trek TNG Season 5 Episode 17 ("The Outcast"), the Enterprise-D send a shuttle into a "pocket of null space", to rescue another small ship in there. There's an energy drain issue, so they buttress the shuttle's systems with an extra battery. Then they go in, waste all their energy, and bar...

Q: How could I become an engineer specializing in rocket engine?

Sea BeanInspired by many classical science fictions such as 2001, A Space Odyssey , Childhood's End and so on since childhood, I've been interested greatly in the space exploring. I always dream that I could enter the universe one day taking a spaceship. And with commercial manned spaceflight entering a ...

@MauriceKlimek I haven't looked around much recently (I've been drowning in books to-be-read for the past few years) but several SF bookstores used to show "upcoming" releases on their web pages. It might also be possible to scrape that with an appropriate query from ISFDb, but I have never had reason to try.
The problem then is separating new releases from re-releases, which is relatively simple for a human, more complicated for a script.
Locus used to publish upcoming releases looking 6 months ahead (it may still, it's been a few years since I've picked up an issue) so it might be possible to glean info from there.
(Locus at least was fairly good about flagging re-releases, or even if a paperback release followed a previous hardcover printing.)
Of course these days there's all the self-published stuff, which probably at least follows Sturgeon's Law squared, since there's no publisher gate to catch the worst, most obvious crap.

Q: How did Viren's army catch up so quickly?

AdamantStarting at the beginning of The Dragon Prince, Rayla, Callum, and Ezran set off to return the egg of the titular character to hbis mother, the dragon queen. We know that they had been travelling for about a week by the end of first season, because Rayla and Callum discussed the fact that they h...

Q: What was the nature of the deal that Ezran struck?

AdamantIn the third season of The Dragon Prince, Ezran says that In order to avoid this dilemma, Ezran negotiates some sort of deal which involves him abdicating and being cast in shackles into the dungeons. There is a lot that is somewhat confusing here. If Ezra proposed that he abdicate as an altern...

Q: In the 2000 miniseries, "Dune", what does Gurney say during the sparring scene on Caladan?

Michael StachowskyThis has been bothering me for 20 years. I even owned the DVD and watched it a lot. During the sparring scene on Caladan, Paul says that he's not in the mood for the fight. Gurney says: "Not in the mood? Mood is a thing for [something] young pup. Mood is not for fighting" What is that [somet...

Q: Novel, first of series, all I can remember is a girl fighting a ghost on a hill with musical magic

Eisenbaer I can specifically recall a particular bit where the girl is much later working in a shop and raises the price on an item, rather than selling it for what it was logged in at. Read some time in the mid 90’s. I recall the cover having the ghost in question and the girl wearing an open vest.

Q: Any significant textual differences between the 1954-5 Lord of the Rings and later editions?

garnettI know that Tolkien made meaningful changes to the content of The Hobbit - both in the 1955 2nd Edition and the 1966 3rd Edition - to align it better with the world and plot depicted in LotR. What I'm wondering is whether the text of Lord of the Rings itself has changed from edition to edition, w...
