Q: Remembering a Older Sci-fi book

D A VTrying to remember the name of a book. It was about a male slacker/loser who is captured by an alien because he won't be missed. The alien has a machine on his ship that input information directly into his brain. Things like card tricks, basic wound treatment, karate, and so on. He is taught all ...

Q: Shoot Her - Jurassic Park Jophery Brown Death doesn't make sense

John PeterWhen Jophery Brown is killed in the beginning of Jurassic Park something very unrealistic happens, look at 2:48 and 2:58 it looks like he's being sucked by a huge thing (just like when a big fan sucks something). If the raptor have grabbed his leg he would not be able to fly like 2:58, so why did...

Q: What is the accurate inscription on the Aduril/Narsil pommel?

user500665I am using the Tengwar Annatar font to write out the inscription that appears on the pommel of the movie replica sword, but one character is tripping me up. According to this website: https://www.elvish.org/gwaith/movie_inscriptions.htm#narsil the inscription written out looks like this: This mo...

Q: What are the specific differences, effects and methodologies of Torquasm Rao and Torquasm Vo?

RusshiroSuperman has been trained in two forms of Kryptonian Martial Arts, Torquasm Rao and Torquasm Vo_. Both arts seem to have a heavy emphasis on their mental aspects (Rao being a means by which he can push his brain into a Theta Wave state, Vo being akin to psychic training to allow for mental proje...

Q: He hesitated, realizing what he was about to say to the world's first human level AI would be in history books... -- which SF story is this from?

Walt Donovan(I was directed here from r/scifi, where I asked this question, to no avail but some interest. I am posting a copy of what I posted on that subreddit.) I am trying to dig up this novella, I believe, that I read once about 20-30 years ago. It's about a computer scientist who is trying to build an ...

@TheLethalCarrot Well, it's not completely terrible. A large part of it isn't really new.
But that's already the first issue. The old agreement was good enough. I have been a moderator on two sites for several years based on the old agreement without any problems. Now SE thinks that’s not enough and they want more.

I guess it’s purpose, reading between the lines, is to add in what was already done but not there, make the wording more legalese and to cover themselves from another lawsuit. That last point being the main reason

Yeah, the first draft of that thing must have been even more like that.
> When I saw the first draft of the v2 moderator agreement back at the start of January, I figured that was rock-bottom for Stack Overflow. It was overtly insulting through and through, and possibly even stood to put moderators in a position of violating contracts they'd signed with their actual employers. It seemed almost engineered to force a good chunk of the rest of the moderators to quit, to finally destroy a decade of work and salt the earth on which it had stood.

I did see a few comments saying the first draft was terrible aye

9:10 AM
Although I have recently seen a few posts where Shog is misremembering other things (I looked them up in old transcripts, which he cannot do anymore), I believe his statements about the first draft are true.
But anyway, we can see that the new mod agreement isn't an "agreement", it's a one-sided demand.

Well it's for the mod to agree to the company's demands no?

in effect, yes
They are not offering anything in exchange for their demands; I don't have to sign that.
So the old contract remains valid until they actively cancel it. Let's see when they will do it.

Are they not cancelling it after the 60 days or whenever it is?
They've been getting away with not offering anything for years, they're not gonna change that now

9:27 AM
@TheLethalCarrot Yes, but they only take away some tools first, the diamond later. I am not sure when exactly that cancels the existing agreement.

To give a second chance I suppose and catch up with those inactive mods, who probably shouldn't be mods if they haven't seen the agreement in the 2/3 months but that's a different discussion

The formal step will probably be when they take away access to PII; however, PII was already well covered by the existing agreement.

9:43 AM
One thing I remember the agreement saying was they won't mention you in any press without permission

Yes, that's new. And it's clear to everyone where this came from. Sad times that they have to write that down.

10:10 AM
@FadedGiant yup, but I'm still glad it's in

10:27 AM
I'm glad that I never connected my real name with SE.

@Randal'Thor mine isn't directly connected, but it wouldn't be hard to find out if you connected the dots

@AncientSwordRage You mentioned it in old Mos once. (I can safely say that since old Mos isn't searchable any more :-) )

Q: Book ID: Mechsuit on a crystal planet

PaulCan someone help ID a book please. I probably read it in the 80s, but can't be sure it was early 90s. It was the story of a lone human in a mech suit who explores an alien planet where much of the life is crystal based. They smash through everything, overpowering the vegetation in the mechsuit un...

Q: Story about a black hole and a robot therapist

NathanielI'm trying to recall a story I read as a child, probably in the late 1980s, though it may well have been written before that. I think it was a short story in an anthology, but I don't remember anything about the book it was in. The plot, as far as I remember, is that a person (probably male) is s...

@Randal'Thor I tried searching too, but I would have posted an answer anyway, since that answer is pretty poor and a lot of points in the question are wrong.

Q: Scifi novel where God invents the rules of physics as men discovers science, and gets overwhelmed by the complexity of it

ChoumarinTrying to find this book I read probably something like 15-20 years ago. I can't recall if it was a full book or just a short story in a collection. I think the later. It's also possible I read it in French (can't recall), but maybe it was translated. God has to come up with explanations as men d...

Q: I remember a short story about a farmer who unearths a mysterious motor or engine

The BabooHe is working his field and digs up a large object that seems to by humming. There is an opening in the case so he inserts a piece of lumber and it spins with such torque that it almost kills him. I cannot remember how the story ends. I read it in the mid 1960's.

A: Short story about a farmer who unearths a mysterious motor or engine

DavidWThe short story is almost undoubtedly "The Great Engine" (1943) by A. E. van Vogt. It was subsequently used as the first part of the novel The Beast (1963). The story was first published in Astounding, July 1943 and can be read at the Internet Archive. He climbed to the top of the hill and cam...

I'm really not sure what I've done wrong here, but if someone wants to give me another downvote at least I can get a badge for deleting it. :-P

That's weird. Seems like a decent answer. Do people think you're just harvesting rep by posting an answer when it's already been linked in comments? But that's how we mark story-ID questions as dupes, by getting an answer accepted first.

4gus71nA few days ago I remembered a short story that I was thought in high-school, and I'm trying to find from what book it comes from.
