Q: Story about a young man who is discovered and trained by an old magician

bobsbeenjaminThe book was likely aimed at middle-schoolers, and I read the first half of it in the early 90's. The boy was a successful thief, and I think he came from an abusive home. An old wizard/magician found the boy and convinced him to follow the magician on a quest. The magician started to train the b...

Q: Kids getting lost on the moon

AshleyI read a book in 6th grade for school and I can't remember the title. It involved people living under domes on the moon. A couple of kids ended up stealing/taking a key that took them outside the dome to another dome by some sort of vehicle. I only remember them being in a weird but beautiful ali...

Q: Is Ron Weasley the master of Bellatrix Lestrange's first wand?

Kyle VHarry and Ollivander have this conversation in Deathly Hallows after Malfoy Manor detainment. ‘Walnut and dragon heartstring,’ he said. ‘Twelve and three-quarter inches. Unyielding. This wand belonged to Bellatrix Lestrange.’ ‘And this one?’ Ollivander performed the same examination. ‘Hawthorn an...

Q: What was the first Sci-Fi reference to one's life/being leaving the biological and becoming part of the machine/program?

hawkeyeIn the 1992 film Lawnmower man we see: Angelo confronts Jobe, who captures him and declares his plan to reach the final stage of evolution by becoming "pure energy" in the VSI computer mainframe, and from there reach into all the systems of the world. He promises his "birth" will be signalled by...

@TheLethalCarrot not blue/black white/yellow?

Just yellow works

I'd like 25 copies on goldenrod, 25 on canary, 25 on saffron and 25 on paella.

8:56 AM
Especially odd when you consider that paella is yellow because of saffron.

@NapoleonWilson but so are canaries 👀

Q: Who takes care of the Squibs' education expenses in Muggle schools?

ShreedharAccording to the answers to the question here, The Ministry of Magic covers the cost of all magical education. In addition, Book 7 mentioned that Squibs were sent to muggle schools so that they could integrate with the people like "them". As Ron's great-aunt Auntie Muriel puts it: Squibs were us...

Q: How could the crew abandon the Enterprise-D?

colmdeIn the Star Trek: TNG episode, "Cause and Effect", Picard gives the order for all hands to abandon ship. It's the only instance I can remember but there may have been others. Now if we accept that he couldn't have known that Enterprise would explode so soon and so it would be reasonable to hope t...

Q: Is meat/fish eaten in the Kung Fu Panda universe?

PahlavanThe Kung Fu Panda universe contains both carnivores (tigers, leopards, wolves, crocodiles etc.) and animals commonly eaten, both by those and in Chinese cuisine (pigs, ducks/geese, cattle, sheep etc.). All of these are portrayed as sentient and one would assume that they are thus not part of the ...

Meh, I find it super okay.

I think if you're trying to convey a lot of information, padding it with niceness and greetings isn't really needed (though TBH I moved away from that generally anyway)

Maybe I wouldn't have given a consolation upvote, but eating meat and fish is totally fine...and delicious.

I upvoted that question, not a bad question... oh never mind it was cross posted from M&TV

12:27 PM
Oh, I meant the answer. I didn't even look at the question.

I thought your second comment was about the question
Do we close cross posted questions or just frown on them... I can't remember the usual practice

Heh, the original question had a serious bullshit comment from a known problem user. More suprising it took that long to cross-post it.
@TheLethalCarrot Normally they ought to get closed/deleted. It's problematic when the user waits for a sufficiently long time. However, even then it's preferable to tailor the question for the specific site.

Yeah that's what I thought

Q: Selecting an example for the Tour page's example question

TheLethalCarrotIt would appear that at some point in time the Tour lost its example question: it somehow has become ineligible and so has defaulted to the default unicorn example. Q: Are Tolkien-s Elves vegetarian?

TheMadHatterAre Tolkien's elves vegetarian ? Do they only eat plant food? In Peter Jackson's The Hobbit movie, we see that the elven table is set with only plant food. This happens when Thorin & Co. are dining in Rivendell, where Dwalin famously asks : 'Where's the meat?' Apparently this implies that elve...

Q: Manga about a child of the two strongest people in the world granted to them by a goddess

HamdahI can't remember the title of a manga I read. In the start, two old people considered the strongest in the world, are given a chance by a goddess to have a child by turning back their youth. Many years later, it shows the child has very hard training and the two old people are trying not to spoil...

> A “bubble” is an unofficial term used to describe the cluster of people outside your household with whom you feel comfortable spending time during the pandemic.
I assume that is what it being referred to here.

7:05 PM
I agree, but I've never heard the term "pod" used in that context at all.
"Pod" to me means a collective of orcas.

Pod people
But I haven't heard either used in this context.

@DavidW didn't know that was the term. When I hear "pod", I think of a detachable capsule, relatively small in size compared to the thing it's taken off of.
Space shuttle pod, peas pods, etc
Or the plastic things with laundry detergent inside

@JackBNimble "people outside your household with whom you feel comfortable spending time"? That's not a bubble, that's an empty set.

7:21 PM
@Jenayah Sure, those are all pods. I'm thinking pods of {possibly intelligent beings}.

Q: Did we ever see or hear anything of Lockhart's dueling club after the first scene in it?

J. MiniDuring chapter 11 of Chamber of Secrets - The Dueling Club - we see Lockhart get obliterated by Snape in a display match at said club. Alexander KlauerSo I think by googling around I have almost certainly figured this out (see below), but posting anyway in case someone else is looking for the same book, and to remove any remaining uncertainty. J. MiniIt's pretty obvious that he used the elf equivalent of apparation, but are we ever actually told that? Q: Looking for a fantasy book from the mid-late 90s about a princess with a sun brand on her hand

Emily GusI read this book when I was between 12-14 I think so around the late 90s (97-99 maybe?). I remember the cover being of a woman holding her hand aloft with sun rays radiating from it. The basic story that I remember was that this princess was the grand-daughter of the ruler (king, emperor, not s...
