A: List of bounties with no deadlines

ThunderforgeI am offering 100 bounty to the following question about Frank Herbert’s dune series: What age would an off-worlder start taking the spice Melange? I previously put a bounty on it, but it expired with no new answers. I am looking for an answer that relies on original sources (book quotes, a...

Why didn't I get a notification when this was posted?

Probably something about it having a good load of answers already
hmmm, no, maybe not

12:27 AM
Well I watched The Matrix
It was...eh
I mean the special effects were cool
The plot didn't really make sense?
Like I understood it
But it was kind of illogical

@Stormblessed watch out for Null coming in and kicking you for that :P

If the agents are parts of the computer they're inside of, why aren't they just omnipotent murdering machines? I don't get it

I got Enlightened and Nice Answer for the story-ID today
@Jenayah What do you think of the movie?

Congrats! :D

12:30 AM
I always read ":D" smileyfaces as someone saying "D" but with a positive connotation, if that makes any sense

@Stormblessed I enjoy it very much. I don't dwelve much into the allegories though (sorry for the symbolism lovers and stuff).
But I think it would have been better on its own.

The beginning was very, very cool
I admit that

Like, Reloaded and Revolutions are visually AWESOME, and while you don't have the same kind of new "holy shit woaaah" feeling, they're impressive.

But it doesn't follow the rules that it set up at the beginning, you know?

Story-wise though... Lengths and lengths, sometimes.
Neo flying away all "I'm coming for you" would have been a more than decent ending.

12:34 AM
Like if they're in a computer and the robots control it, how is Morpheus able to do the thing with the handcuffs breaking? Isn't he just a normal person?
I'm tempted to watch the other two films but they leave Netflix on the 30th, which is very soon, and I want to see Austin Powers 2 before it leaves
Austin Powers was a better movie, IMO (I saw it a few days ago on Netflix)
Ever seen that one?

@Stormblessed ... that is... not really a comparison I'd make

Well still a movie that a lot of people told me was great
Lived more up to expectations

I mean I get that one likes one more than the other

For some reason they're removing the first and second soon but not the third one.

but scifi and cringy parody spy stuff is apple and oranges

12:41 AM
Well I mean there was like space or whatever so it's the same (?)

wut?
okay, well. Space apples and space oranges

LincolnManWhy does Darth Tyranus have a quillon-like spike sticking out of one side of his lightsaber? See that metal spike sticking out next to the business end of the lightsaber? Q: Drarry fan fiction where Draco had amnesia and Harry lied to him telling him he was his wife

AnonymousIt's a Harry and Draco pairing story. I don't remember much of the story but all I remember is that Draco had amnesia and Harry and Ron found him. Harry had 3 kids Lily, Albus and James. He lied that Draco was his wife and took him home to his children. I'm not sure what happened to Harry's forme...

Yet here we are.

Well there's no harmony in Harry Potter pairings

What should be Harry and Ron?
That sounds very British.

@Adamant None existent?

@Adamant "Hon" is a Baltimore thing - I think it's short for "Honey" - used in the same way that people use honey, darling, or sweetie. There's also a festival: honfest.net

Q: Was there any intentional meaning behind Gordon Freeman's surname?

colmdeIn Half-Life 2, we do hear the Vortigaunts referring to Gordon as "The Free Man" which kind of makes sense under the oppressive regime of the Combine and that he has become the symbol of the resistance. (Fighting for freedom). But I'm assuming the creators of the game didn't plan this while the...

No self-respecting user of scifi can claim that Austin Powers is better than The Matrix.
You should watch The Matrix again to understand it better. It takes a few times to take in all the symbolism and understand it more fully.
Or browse the questions and answers for it on the site.

2:22 PM
@Null I only have it until the 30th, unfortunately
Leaves Netflix then

@Stormblessed It's only the 28th. You can watch it like a half dozen times before the 30th.

Well, I mean, that is physically possible...

Stop complaining then and gerrit watched

It's going to be the weekend. What could possibly be more important than watching The Matrix as many times as necessary to understand it?
Especially when you've got a wonderful cheat sheet to help you understand it.

Q: Chinese-language movie about an alien boy with the ability to grant wishes

ThunderforgeI saw a live-action Chinese-language (Mandarin, I assume) movie with English subtitles while on a plane in China in June 2010. Q: What was the first multiple choice book?

athorntonIn the 1980's I read a lot of these. A huge list is at gamebooks.org. So I define a "multiple choice book" as broadly as possible. There can be any type of game system. There can be no game system; the Dungeons and Dragons multiple choice books had none. There can be any settings. The audience ca...

@Mithrandir well in America

@Marvin Quite difficult to track down finding the first SFF one

@b_jonas ?

4:10 PM
Austin Powers doesn't even TRY to be a serious movie - it's pure parody. And not even an SF parody, but a spy/technothriller parody. So comparing it to The Matrix is like comparing apples and bowling balls. One can say that one likes apples better than bowling balls, but a direct comparison between the two is fairly meaningless.

4:24 PM
Well I mean people compare very different things.
Still movies, I guess
Any SF movies I should watch? I never watch movies really

Q: 1980s Analog story about the inventor of an autodoc

DavidWIf I'm off by a couple of years it could have been early 1990s, but not later than that. @DavidW oh yeah I should watch that one

You're never seen Bladerunner?!
What's next, you've never seen Star Trek?!

@Stormblessed It's a well-written story-id question with lots of details remembered, not about one of the frequently asked stories, and it's answered now. I'm just happy about that.

@DavidW well I’ve seen the third movie
@b_jonas Oh I was confused by the deleted message, thought it might have something relevant

It was a while ago, though
(The J.J. Abrams series)
I saw “The Trouble With Tribbles” and the first original series episode. That’s all.

I thought you meant it was analog, as in physically printed :P — Stormblessed 1 hour ago
Nice ahah

Oh, wait. The third one from the new ones. Yeah, that was indeed pretty good.
Gheez, that's the "third one" now, I guess. ;-)

6:43 PM
If I want to watch Star Trek, should I watch the whole old series? It’s pretty long
I’ve heard that The Next Generation is very good

That depends on what you, well, want to watch.

Well does it make much sense if you haven’t seen TOS? Would I be missing a lot if I skipped to TNG?

It's all Star Trek. But...noone is forcing you to sit through that 60s show just so you can claim Trek-cred if you don't want to.
TNG is largely independent from TOS. I doubt you need to have seen TOS to make any kind of sense of TNG and there are hardly any story connections really.
They're quite different shows altogether.
I mean, you gotta know there's this Starfleet thing, and a spaceship. But I'd be surprised if that doesn't come across in the first few episodes.

@NapoleonWilson From personal experience, there is no need to watch TOS before TNG.

And from personal experience, TNG is much better anyway. ;-)

6:50 PM
Not going to get an argument from me! :)
One thing that might be worth noting is that the series can have very different sensibilities. So if you don't get engaged by TNG, don't give up completely. You might find you enjoy TOS much better, or DS9 (in the other direction).

Indeed, they're quite different.
Jan 6 at 2:54, by Napoleon Wilson
There's about 5 million different TV shows and they can be quite different. If you're not a hardcore Star Trek person, you might only like some of it.

Q: Fantasy story, probably by Esther Friesner, about Arthurian characters talking like Valley girls

LorendiacI think I read this somewhere in the interval of 1993-2004, and I think it was in an issue of an SF/Fantasy magazine which was new on the stands at the time. As opposed to being a back issue from the 1980s which I'd picked up at a sale, for instance. At any rate, I'm sure I read this fantasy stor...
