Q: Why do most modern science fiction action movies have a David vs Goliath theme?

@Marvin flagged as too broad, but thought unclear would work too? Which one is better?

@Stormblessed it's every close reason except dupe.
POB because it's kind of a feeling thing to say they're David vs Goliath situations. David had a stone thrower. Hulk is, well, Hulk to begin with.
Unclear because of the above, and lack of definition of David and Goliath
Too broad because it spans tons of movies with different director's choices etc

This reminds me of a comment from David a couple weeks ago about some languages lacking the notion of a sentence... scifi.stackexchange.com/a/209453/98028
(please don't take that the wrong way... Yes, not everybody speaks perfect English, yes, writing issues exist, but this one just feels like... :/ )

@davidw any ones you know of in particular?

It was a question actually
Mar 25 at 21:48, by DavidW
I'll admit to a fair bit of ignorance of foreign languages; of the 4 I've studied all have been European. Are there foreign languages whose native speakers would have trouble with the concept of a sentence? I've read a number of first/early posts recently that read as, essentially, an unpunctuated (and uncapitalized) stream of consciousness.

7:23 PM
@Jenayah Given that somehow there's a distinction between "sci-fi" and "spi-fi," I would have to say that Kingsmen comes down on the side of spi-fi.

I’m confused
I’m supposed to Avoid trivial edits unless absolutely necessary?
That’s quite contradictory
Trivial is basically an antonym of necessary

That said, I'm curious how, say, Moonraker isn't SF. Fleets of spacecraft, space battles with lasers...

@DavidW where did you see it wasn’t? That sounds like definitely sci-fi

@Stormblessed "Trivial" in the sense of minute, rather than almost meaningless, I think. So a 2-character edit that fixes a spoiler tag is okay but not just bolding text.

@DavidW oh
Makes sense
Yeah lasers are sci-fi
If they hurt

7:54 PM
@Jenayah Hah. TIL "spy-fi;" I'd never encountered the term before. So I wasn't aware of the meta about it, or how the distinction was drawn.
But now that I have, I've changed my mind; if Moonraker has core SF-nal elements sufficient to move it from spy-fi to sci-fi then so does Kingsmen.
(Or at least the first one; I haven't seen the 2nd one.)
The plot of the 1st Kingsmen hangs on, essentially, the distribution of chips for global mind control.

@DavidW was thinking of this answer I think...
14
A: Are works that aren't SF per se, but have occasional SFnal elements on-topic? (e.g. spy movies)

Eight Days of MalaiseShould depend on how heavily incorporated the sci-fi elements are in the spy-fi property. Moonraker would lean a lot in the sci-fi elements. Probably. Whereas another film in the James Bond franchise, e.g. On Her Majesty's Service, far less so. But then we're onto the slippery slope of topics ...

Also okay, good to know then!
(and FWIW I also learned that term on this site ;) )

@Jenayah Right, that's what I guessed. That's why I changed my mind about Kingsmen.

Ok
Might write a meta about that

Meh. I doubt it's a desperately needed feature.

[scifi-tag:___] and [meta-scifi-tag:___] could be useful in a few cases

There's rarely even a need to discuss specific tags from one site in a totally different site's chatrooms or meta posts.

@NapoleonWilson On this Meta where I list the tags that are hidden so it is clear that the message is listing the ones I have hidden it looks kind of weird to have them just in square brackets
