Q: Late 1980s or 90s fantasy novel about how real magic works

LoniburbI have ridiculously little information but I started reading this book years ago and left it on the metro at a pivotal part! I still haunt used bookstores but have no idea what it’s called. I believe it’s a female protagonist, I believe dark haired. She’s learning magic. It’s set in a fantasy w...

Q: Class of the Reman Warbird Scimitar

Finn LarkinIs there an official class of ship for the Reman Warbird Scimitar? Or is that the one and only of it's class? I have always loved the ship since I first saw it in Star Trek: Nemesis, but other than "Scimitar" I never heard what class it is. Also, if anyone happens to know where to find a cheap/de...

Q: Are the male souls that can channel affected by the taint on saidin while they are waiting to be reborn?

rianjsChanneling is a thing of soul. Souls are reborn/spun back out by the Wheel periodically, to say nothing of the only channeling soul that we know who is also a Hero of the Horn (the Dragon soul). While waiting to be reborn, they wait in TAR. Do channelers channel between lives? If so, are the men...

Q: Do water Pokémon produce potable water?

Q: What's up with sex and pronouns in Ann Leckie's Provenance?

Ben CrowellI'm currently half-way through Ann Leckie's novel Provenance, and am finding myself really confused by the pronouns and sexes. Can anyone explain what's going on? I'm getting the impression that maybe there are three sexes, a male, a female, and a neuter, which I guess would require some major bi...

@Stormblessed he isn't in the epilogue
In all seriousness, we never hear about anyone having sex at Hogwarts.
I think that some people must, but I doubt Harry, Hermione, or Ron did, or it would have been mentioned.
I suppose Romilda Vane probably did.
And we know Voldemort and Bellatrix did! (That wasn't at Hogwarts, but, well....)

Q: Old story about New York City having become "Black New York"

LorendiacI ran across this in a science fiction anthology. The book may have had a sociological/political theme. I think I read it somewhere around the late 1990s, but I also think the book was a hardback I found in a library; something that had probably been sitting on the shelf for many years before I c...

Q: What anime features a kid that has a small humanoid magical companion who has a round shape and wings?

Q: What do the symbols in Mistborn mean?

StormblessedIn Mistborn books one and two (and likely others, haven't read more than the first part of the second one so far), there are symbols at the beginnings of all the chapters. They resemble the ones in the corners of the map. What are these symbols?

5:57 AM
@Stormblessed No. ID questions are off topic on both Movies & TV and Anime.
@Stormblessed If you're just asking "is this correct", you're probably not going to get an awesome response on either site unless you can be specific about what in the sentence you think is wrong. Neither site does "proofreading" which includes "Read this sentence and tell me if there's anything wrong with it". If, instead, you ask "Here's my sentence but I don't think the verb form here is correct, here's what I want to convey, what would be the correct form?" That should be fine, at least on ELL.
ELL doesn't require that you be a learner but they are much kinder when it comes to simpler questions. :)
If it's a complex English question, ELU is probably going to be a better bet but you'll want to be clear about your intentions and show your work.

Q: Children's novel about a boy's encounter with an alien called "The Ancient" aboard a ship

CarterTrying to identify a novel I read - probably in the 1950s or 1960s - about a cabin boy on board a sea-going freighter who battles with an alien called "The Ancient" who has taken over the ship. The alien materializes by de-materializing the substance of an ordinary object (such as a carpet). Al...

sevensevensIn the original trilogy (A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, Return Of The Jedi) calling Luke, Leia, Hans, etc made sense. They're rebelling against an evil empire. Q: My Hero Academia fan fiction about how All For One is Hisashi Midoriya and Inko is a bad parent

James LawmanI'm looking for a My Hero Academia fan fiction with tags about how All For One is Hisashi Midoriya and Inko is a bad parent trying to do better. There were other details, but they've slipped my mind, can you find it? It was on Archive of Our Own.

Even if it's accepted? O_o

Well it is asking to Id both so yeah
Yeah, don’t want it auto nuked and then OP rage quits, for example, and unaccepts everything and then the dupe closure looks incorrect

Whoa, -5, whatever happened to the community? ;-)

8:41 PM
Badly written question
Also fan-fic ID

@TheLethalCarrot That's a bit of an extreme situation, though.

(Second one is an automatic downvote from me a lot of the time)

True but it’s better to leave it around just in case than remove it for essentially no reason

Well, I put it into the hands of the moderators.

Look at Rands pinned comment :P

8:43 PM
Good thing it doesn't get auto-deleted then.

I hope that starred message isn't a testament against any kind of comment flagging.

It’s pretty much about accept comments on id qs if I remember correctly

Hello?
Should that question have both those tags?

It seems to be about auto-deleted comment in general.

8:45 PM
Well you still need to be careful I general

If anything, I flagged it precisely because the accept button is exactly then venue to express this sentiment and was responsibly pursued by the asker/commenter already.

@TheLethalCarrot Which I very much am.
I know that such comments are valuable on unaccepted answers.

@TheLethalCarrot Ah, got it

It is but story ids are a special case and I would personally avoid flagging them, they are useful to an extent and causing no harm so the benefits of removing them are less than the negatives

8:48 PM
Well, they are not. And people rage unaccepting isn't a reasonable scenario to be accounted for IMHO. It simply just doesn't happen.
Unaccepting non-id answers for the wrong reasons is equally unpleasant.

Well it’s an extreme yes

Worse, tomorrow that guy watches the film and suddenly realizes the answer is wrong, unaccepting it. ;-)
Or reads the story, whatever.

There are other reasons to leave em but meh and yeah in that case they can delete the comment themselves ;P

@NapoleonWilson Does that happen much?

@Stormblessed Not at all, like said above.

8:51 PM
FWIW I think I have seen it before

Me too.
But I've also seen a blood moon not too long ago. ;-)
Oh, an Expanse question. Maybe you people were all wrong in begging me not to watch it!

@NapoleonWilson we did?

Heh, not sure I ever realized they faintly play the Die Hard soundtrack when Danny talks about the film's ending.

I refuse to answer until you tell me if I ought to watch The Expanse or not.
Feb 21 at 23:21, by Jenayah
Haven't seen it.

9:04 PM
@NapoleonWilson Why?

I mistyped.

Should the tag be renamed? It is missing a "the"

Oh my.

Seems likely we'll end up with another tag called [the-boss-baby] eventually when someone is typing a "the" and it doesn't show up
@NapoleonWilson A completely pressing issue, of course

Either flag for it to be renamed or replace it yourself, that thing can't have a lot of questions

9:08 PM
@Jenayah There's only one, yeah

Your call, also depends on your x/15 and amount of old questions currently on the homepage

On , is that tag wiki edit useful? It seems unhelpful as it doesn't describe to movie, now that I think about it

Uhm, it seems as useful as it needs to be.
If you don't know what the film is about, why are you asking and answering questions about it? ;-)

Still better than no wiki at all
