Q: Definition of "scumble"?

DaveInCazIn the saavy series of books the word "scumble" is used in what I think is an original way. I have the sense it relates to using the saavy abilities the characters have, but in not sure what an exact definition would be. A definition from Google is: verb 1. modify (a painting or color) by ...

Alex KinmanI read this story in one of those "Year's best SF" anthologies circa 2001~2002. Q: In the Potterverse, how many rounds could an M16-A2 fire in the span of a spell covering the same distance relative to the caster?

JacobI am attempting to use rate of fire to explain to a pure blood how bad it would be for muggles to declare war on wizards. By my calculations an M16-A2 can fire a 30 round magazine at a rate of 90 rounds/second on cyclic rate at 500 yds without factoring vectors or attenuation for loss of accuracy.

Well, same as in score far outstrips answer count.
I'd need another 91 HP answers for gold.

Score usually gets way ahead of answer count if you answer new stuff
Especially for things like story id and HP where the Qs reguarly hit the HNQ
I'm kind of disappointed - there's an interesting SF con being held near me, but I'll be away on vacation the weekend it's taking place.
None of the recent HP or story ID questions have interested me, though, for some reason.

Venom was unbelievably bad

I've heard mixed reviews but yet to see it
14:30
Certainly not a great film by any standards, but not embarrassingly bad
I thought the humor was childish and the antagonist was too cliched
The main entity takes his time making an appearance
14:46
@AnkitSharma I rarely have questions about fiction - I can puzzle out an answer I like as well as anyone else could (unless the author chimed in with a canon answer, but how likely is that?).
One of my goals, as an author hopeful, is to get published and then answer reader questions ONLY on this site, eventually getting a gold badge in myself.
If you need a testreader / proofreader / editor, contact me... :P
@Donald.McLean A gold badge would be hard. That would require a lot of questions.
There are very few tags where anyone has a gold tag badge.
@b_jonas I have two bronze tag badges and can do that math. :-)
Although more than we used to have some years ago. DVK has a Force Awakens gold badge.
I guess you could have a gold non-tag badge though.
And me and Aeg both got the GoT/ASOIAF gold tag badges which bumped it
15:00
I want to see more superhero stories set in fictional or at least divergent settings.
Where the world can actually change, not have to stay static.
@Adamant On what media? Comic book, cartoon, novel?
Oh right, you already said you were watching Steven Universe.
All of them. But expecially visual media.
@b_jonas Steven Universe is an interesting case. It's clearly not set on anything much like the real world in the fine details, but it's also not too concerned with the bigger picture on Earth.
@Adamant I was confused about that when I started watching. The first season starts like the few gems lived secretly, and not many people outside the town even knew about their existence. The scale of the war only gets clear later. Eventually it becomes obvious that all of Earth knows at least that there's been a huge ancient gem war on Earth before the human civilization rose.
Some of the current events could still be secret, but even that seems less and less likely now.
@b_jonas The Gems live secretly now, but they didn't always.
They're the remnants of an alien invasion, they probably aren't interested in making a lot of fuss if possible.
@Adamant Sure, only I didn't think there used to be that many. It turns out that the gem war involved an impossibly large amount of gems, so much that there must be a lot of archaeological evidence about it, stuff that would stay even if no rebel group remained.
15:09
@b_jonas Right. And as you say, the world does know about that. They're just not too concerned about it, so far as I can tell (like I said, the show doesn't dwell on the big picture), because so far as they know most of that's in the past. Until recently, anyway.
The numbers are ... well I thought they must be a gross exaggeration, until I realized that it was specifically Peridot who said how many gems there were.
@b_jonas How many did she say?
@Adamant I don't recall... let me try to look it up.
Also, this might need a separate chatroom because it involves heavy spoilers.
I don't think they know the details that the Crystal Gems do, exactly. Just that there was a big alien invasion several thousand years ago.
And whatever they can gather from the monuments.
Found it. SPOILER steven-universe.fandom.com/wiki/Back_to_the_Barn/Transcript "millions of Gem shards" => that should mean at least tens of thousands of gems, probably most of them created on site on Earth just for the war
15:15
But yes, the show doesn't really talk about that. If I had to guess, the situation on the show seems most consistent with a government policy of not bothering the technologically and magically powerful aliens much and hoping that they leave the Earth alone or get chased off by the Crystal Gems.
Which is a smart policy, since it worked for millenia.
I think there was some other quote too
Mind you, I still don't buy the bullshit that it could destroy Earth. At worst it would cause a few minor earthquakes. But that's a different matter.
@Jenayah I don't think a single one of the ~100 old questions I answered was previously unanswered. So there should still be room for someone else to add new answers.
@b_jonas You don't "buy" what's stated on the show?
What reason would you have for skepticism? Practical experience with Gem fusion? ;)
@Adamant It was stated in character, by someone who isn't a professional. Peridot has experience with creating gems and how the gem fusion works. Not with how planets work and how stable they are.
@b_jonas There's a reason it's always called a geoweapon.
15:18
His experience is why I believe his words about the scale, and how many gem soldiers must have been ... involved and ... that thing they're talking about there for a dozen episodes, just for this invasion.
And I think there was a bigger number than just "millions" somewhere, let me try to find it.
It wasn't just Peridot who mentioned that. It was Yellow Diamond.
Perhaps not, but "millions of gem shards" was repeated several times, and Peridot seems to be an authority in that.
Oh, and also Blue Diamond (that's why the whole thing with Greg happened).
He also mentions the time scale by the way. The war was "thousands of years ago".
So yes, I'd say that the Diamonds know enough about Gems that their geoweapon would do exactly what it was designed for.
15:24
@Adamant Ok. I might change my mind later when I rewatch all the episodes I've already seen and watch the lot of new episodes released after Jungle Moon.
My impression was that the weapon has terrible implications about what the war was like, and about the difficult task of organizing the dismantling of it in the future, but it wouldn't have actually destroyed Earth.
@NapoleonWilson Annihilation aimed at 10-year-olds?
There's millions of gems shards, so the puzzle is too big to just lay out on a big mat, they have to do it as an external sort in several passes, first dividing the shards by color and type (Peridot can probably teach them a bit about recognizing gem types), then by whatever they can find out about the shards speaking, etc. Eventually the solved parts of the puzzle can help in solving the remaining part.
@b_jonas I don't think the Cluster can be put back together again, to be honest. I think it's kind of its own gestalt thing by now.
Normally I wouldn't have hopes that anything like that would be shown on screen, but Steven Universe isn't a show made to the usual mold, it's become deep and scary very quickly, so they could pleasantly surprise me yet.
All of White's power and all of White's Gems, couldn't put Cluster together again.
15:31
@Adamant Some parts of it are probably too damaged to fix, but the protagonists might still want to restore as much as they can. And Steven was shown to have some powers for healing fractured gems, that's such a big plot point that it will be used for something actually important. Plus Rose has conveniently left a fountain emitting lots of magic healing potion.
@Adamant Lol.
It's not just a magic power too, Steven was shown to actually care about trying to fix corrupted gems, so it's the kind of mission he'll eventually try to do, and it will be hard to talk him off it.
It just has to wait for a while because they have more urgent problems right now.
15:45
@Adamant No, Aero Troopers.

@Jenayah where trumpet
@Adamant I've been seeing more superhero novels of late. I enjoyed Supervillain High by Gerhad Gehrke.
@CuteBaby dunno, the rest matches
Uh, yes it does?

mmmh the previous review was a tad bit clearer on that
Plus sometimes OP misremember things ;)
(the grandmother for instance)
TBF I think it matches quite well with the only minor thing being the trumpet
17:05
checking out the movie to spot a trumpet...
Damn I had an id answer accepted when the OP was decades out on the approximate year
which one?
Ok is that
It's correct
I'm not seeing any trumpets so far but the movie has a Black-and-white kind of opening with jazz music
@Jenayah I was probably thinking of this one but I thought there was one with a bigger gap

Seconded
@TheLethalCarrot There are a whole bunch of regional expressions like this. You can give someone a quiz and then predict, fairly accurately, where someone learned to talk. It's all very Professor Henry Higgins.
Except for people who moved frequently as children.
Ahhh... It's your pain au chocolat/chocolatine debate...
@xkcd It seems a little...uninspired. Sometimes just making up shit isn't really enough. ;-)
17:50
@Jenayah Exactly.
The really funny one is the expression used for when it is sunny and raining at the same time.
That's a "putain de temps de merde"
C'est la vie.
@Jenayah Really? That's ... bizarre.
@Donald.McLean means a "f***ing sh**ty weather" :P
17:55
@Jenayah I actually know enough French to understand that one.
That's part of why I ask for recommendations for music in French.
18:22
@Jenayah are you French?
Ma chere
Please watch to get deeper understanding of French culture
@CuteBaby that is MUCH more innocent than the original
you know that's a remake of a bawdy song, right? :P
O.o
I saw it in a movie called Les Choristes
yeah... The boy in the movie is singing the bawdy one :P
Hence M. Mathieu's stopping him
boy singing the Carlos would have been an anachronism
18:33
Oh lol the English subtitles were innocent enough
Great movie by the way
@CuteBaby nah it's just that the two lines sung in the movie aren't the bawdy ones
Thanks for the education
They threw in the chorus so that 1/ no censorship 2/ more people would get the joke
Same for the "Maréchal, nous voilà" song
The one where the teacher stops the kid asking him where he learnt that, and the kid replies it was a favorite of his grandfather's
Because it's a song praising Pétain, the maréchal (one of the highest ranks in the army) who surrendered France to the Nazis halfway through WW2
But they left in the naughty boy's vulgar song
Never knew that scene had so many in jokes
So the joke is that the kid doesn't know what he's saying but his grandfather was a Pétain supporter... Which isn't a good thing
18:39
The only French song that I know is Frere Jacques
It's weird how it's become a global phenomenon
@CuteBaby well for a non-French watcher I guess it's harder to get the references
Action Reaction
Is that an reference too?
Rewatching the scene there's also a kid spoofing the national anthem :D
Really which one?
"Aux armes citoyens, formez vos bataillons" becoming "Aux armes citoyens, têtes de chiens, formez vos bataillons, bande de couillons"
"To arms, citizens, form your lines" becoming "To arms, citizens, dog heads, form your lines, band of dummies"
IIRC brawly kid had a bawdy song too
like, much more bawdy than "Ils ont des chapeaux ronds" :P
18:45
Yes it had f*** if I recall correctly
ahah yeah I found it, it's a spoof of a lullaby
I'm glad I found another person who knows this movie
The original lullaby is that one:
@CuteBaby it's a really good movie
Yes I love it
Please watch for deeper understanding of Indian (Punjabi) culture

@CuteBaby So Indians magically appear out of thin air, wearing bright colored turbans? :P

@Jenayah Um, do people use those names except in formal contexts, rather than just "pain choco"?
@b_jonas the most common name is "pain au chocolat"
@Jenayah Yes, that's the formal one, the one they write on nice printed price sheets.
As for formal contexts, "pain au chocolat" should be fine
But that's long. Do people say that when just asking for one in a shop, as opposed to just "pain choco"?

I hear "pain au chocoalt" more often than I hear "pain choco", both in formal and unformal contexts
Yeah people go for the long one
There are a few food synonyms used in Hungarian that you have to learn as you grow, when you start to hear people other than your family talk about the same foods you ate at home but with different names. The one that confused me for the longest time was "paraj".
@Donald.McLean Yes, there is a more genuine "coke" vs "soda" vs whatever the third term is on the strangemaps blog I think. Let me try to find it.
Hmm, strangemaps.wordpress.com is now down. I know bigthink.com/strange-maps is supposed to be the successor, but I'm not sure I'll find it there.

FritzHere’s what I can remember about a fantasy book that I really liked but can‘t remember the name of. I thought the story was written by Trudi Canavan, but apparently I was wrong. Hopefully someone else can identify it. The story was about a girl (or boy?) whose parents came from different sides ...
