Q: Cowboy Indian movie

BLASTERSI remember watching a movie where 3 cowboys try support a red indian , get in trouble where they get trapped inside a house , some western lawmen enters into the house and these guys dress them as indians, send them out and they get shot. But somehow these cowboys get caught and get sentenced to...

How can I @ someone in comments with a two word name?

@CorvoAttano doesn't it autocomplete?

@Jenayah e.g. i couldn’t reply to Iñaki Viggers
Not on my phone

@CorvoAttano The ping only rquires the first few letters.

In Safari

And it should give you suggestions.

2:39 PM
First 3 unless the same as another user who is pingable

Some people can't be pinged.

Also I think the ping is without spaces anyway

If they haven't said anything or edited the post.

@TheLethalCarrot Isn't it first four?

Doesn’t suggest in the app or mobile browser @Alex

2:40 PM
@b_j test

@CorvoAttano Find a chat line he has with the chat search function, and use colon syntax
@TheLethalCarrot that pinged me

@CorvoAttano I suggests in the app for me.
Are you sure the person you're trying to ping is in a pingable situation?

No wait... find a chat line he has with the "recent" button on the chat profile

@b_jonas 3 then

@CorvoAttano don't worry though, it's his post so he'll get a notification

2:41 PM
The answerer on my question commenting on their answer @Alex
Oh

@CorvoAttano You can't ping the post owner unless someone else has also commented.
The post owner gets notified automatically.

Someone else has

@CorvoAttano Can you link the post?

Q: In the US: Would it be illegal (maybe fraud) for a musician to fake their own death?

Corvo AttanoI heard about someone who had to do with recording a Jerry Garcia solo album but he died right before it came out and this guy made TONS of money off of it. The Beatles also got a lot of attention when some paranoid guy decided Paul was dead. So my question is: would it be legal for someone to fa...

:46505483 Hmm, can I ping with colon syntax with a chat line from another room?
Nope, I can't.

2:44 PM
It's Inaki's post though, so he'll get a notif, as said above

@CorvoAttano It suggests his name for me.

@Alex on Safari mobile?

Maybe it’s because I’m on data and it’s trying to not waste it by not loading some functionality

@Alex What do you need to be able to invite a user to an existing room?

@Jenayah On Chrome, and on the app.

2:46 PM
@b_jonas to be a mod or room owner, no?

meta.stackexchange.com/questions/58587/… doesn't mention a reputation limit for that.
@Jenayah Hmm. So if you can create a room, then you can use that to effectively ping someone.

@b_jonas Click on the user. Then click invite this user.

@Alex you sure? I thought superpinging was a mod thing

@Jenayah I just invited you to Literature chat.

Though invite =/= pinging

2:48 PM
Did it work?

@b_jonas I wasn’t invited

Yeah but we weren't talking about the same thing actually :)

Jenayah just put a link in comments on one of my answers

You were talking about invitations, which didn't require pinging I guess

@Alex That invites to a new room, and I think you need 100 chat rep for that.

2:49 PM
I've been pinged to rooms I wasn't in
@CorvoAttano I did? :o

@b_jonas There's a separate link to create a new room.

@CorvoAttano when? oO

@Jenayah Didn't he ask about inviting a user to a n existing room?

I'm lost ><

@Alex Dunno, I'm asking about both. I don't know how any form of SE chat invite works.

2:51 PM
@b_jonas I just created a new room for you.

(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

And it looks like you're in it.
And I'm not a moderator.
As far as I know.

You can create rooms with someone, i.e. chat profile -> start a new room with this user

Mind you, at 100 chat rep you can usually also leave comments on the SE site you use the most often.
@Alex You're not a chat mod here. Chat mods' names show up in blue.

@b_jonas mod names show up in blue
Room Owners are italicised I believe

2:53 PM
@b_jonas Yeah, it would be highly unlikely that I would be one without knowing it.

Q: Are there Kryptonians on Prime Earth and does/did New Krypton exist there?

Corvo AttanoNote: Don't spoil anything past the Superman Reborn crossover. I've been reading Superman, Action Comics, and a little bit of Batman and just thought of something. I was surprised when I looked up New Krypton to see what had happened to it during The New 52 but found that the whole arc took plac...

Comments on question

@CorvoAttano ooooh yeah but that was ages ago ^^

Different meanings of "just" there
Which caused the confusion

When you said I "just invited you" I thought you meant like 5 minutes gao

I meant that you ONLY posted a link and I could join, no invites necessary

2:56 PM
@CorvoAttano She just posted a link to the chatroom. Anyone can do that, and anyone can visit it.

How is inviting different? @Alex

@CorvoAttano I just sent you an invitation. You tell me.
I've never been invited anywhere.

@Alex Definitely. In SE, diamond moderators have to sign some legal agreement with Stack Exchance because they have access to private data, and AFAIK all chat mods are diamond mods somewhere.

@b_jonas Correct on all counts

3:00 PM
@b_jonas Yeah, I know. Just making a joke.

@b_jonas That is an often cited error. You might want to fix it:

Q: ModColorFix for Chat

CalvTJust a very very simple userscript that changes the moderator usernames in chat from blue to green. Requested by and built for @doppelgreener on becoming a mod. Link to Github Repo Link to install Any problems, ideas, etc, drop me a line here or at Github, and I'll see what I can do :)

This fixes the blue names bug with the correct color.
:)

Surely they should be orange... oh wait... not a mod :(

@doppelgreener Nah thanks. I already have a Firefox Stylish plugin style active for chat rooms, I can just add an extra rule there if the blue bothers me.

:D
fair choice

@b_jonas well... as much as this is a legal agreement

3:04 PM
Technically the link does have legal in it
And you have to agree to the TOS

Yep. It's not like you have to mail a signed document in to SE, though :)

I'll put my pen away then

@doppelgreener But changing from blue is a good idea, I might try it, although not to the exact shade you use.
The most important reasons for needing custom style is the annoying background image behind the text, and the unnecessarily truncated usernames.
I have some difficulty finding the perfect rules to fix the former, especially since the backgrounds depend on which themed SE site the room belongs to, and there's no easy mark in the DOM to tell that, it's just a stupid custom stylesheet embedded right in the HTML, no class or anything.
I don't know why they do that.
And the CSS uses some strange tricks. Usernames and avatars together are actually in floats for some reason. Perhaps because it's an easy portable way to force them to always appear to the left of the highlighted monologue box?

3:27 PM

Or because it's a hip thing to hate HTML tables in the web design community. More like that.

@b_jonas (don't feel pressured, that fix is just a joke :D)

@doppelgreener Yes, but it's trivial compared to the other chat fixes I want to do.

gotcha

Where could I ask a question about canines and the domestication of them (my question is about why wolves specifically were domesticated, not foxes and coyotes)? Biology? History?

3:35 PM
@CorvoAttano That sounds like a History question to me

There's a Pets but I don't think it would fit there, don't know about their rules though

The hard part is sigs. I'm trying to understand how the current styling works. It's tricky, because there are at least three differently formatted versions (full signature with reputation number; tiny-signature with .avatar-32; .tiny-signature .avatar-16)

@CorvoAttano what's the question?

@Jenayah Doesn't he say? :P

@TheLethalCarrot yeah but in a "biology" sense or "why did humans go for that one" sense?

3:37 PM
I think the latter but good point

Ah I see. So inside the div .tiny-signature, the div.avatar-16 is a right float. That's why the name appears to the left of it if it fits, or below it if it doesn't fit
And then I'll have to fix the truncated room names in the room list.

Q: Which pure-blood supremacists in the Harry Potter stories were actually half-bloods?

RichSTom Riddle favored pure-blood wizards over other wizards and wanted wizards to have power over muggles, but he was the half-blood child of a witch and a muggle father. Q: What was the name of a show where kids can transform into robots in a fantasy world

Gio RamirezOkay so I barley remember watching a show a long time ago where a group of childeren maybe like 10 years old or something (10 years to maybe preteen) and they were transferred into a fantasy like world if I remember correctly (I don't remember how) and in this world they can transform into mecha ...

Argh, how do I fix this mess with the sigs.
The problem is that I'd have to swap elements in the DOM tree, and that's not easy to work around in pure style.

4:06 PM
@b_jonas Nope, wrong. The three differently formatted versions are the full sig with rep number, the full sig without rep number, and the tinysig with avatar-16.

@Jenayah Why were wolves domesticated into dogs but there aren’t coyote/fox/other canine descendants that have been domesticated for as long?

@CorvoAttano oh so yeah rather Hoistory I guess

Okay! Thanks

@Jenayah A Stack Exchange site about hangings?

@Alex nah, typo SE

@TheLethalCarrot thanks for the heads-up on the story ID.

Q: If the normal humans in Percy Jackson could look through the Mist:

JannisIf the normal humans in Percy Jackson could look through the Mist, could they defeat or control the monsters with the knowlegde and weaponry they have? question was longer than 150 chars ... Monster can be defeated variously. Obviously celestial bronze, stygian iron, and imperial gold are the c...

@Marvin Yes, sort of; see Professor Chase near the end of The Titan's Curse.
> Just as the army of monsters came over the hill, a Sopwith Camel swooped down out of the sky.
"Get away from my daughter!" Dr. Chase called down, and his machine guns burst to life, peppering the ground with bullet holes and startling the whole group of monsters into scattering.
"Dad?" yelled Annabeth in disbelief.
"Run!" he called back, his voice growing fainter as the biplane swooped by.
> The Sopwith Camel swooped down again. A few giants threw javelins, and one flew straight between the wings of the plane, but the machine guns blazed. I realized with amazement that somehow Dr. Chase must've gotten hold of celestial bronze to fashion his bullets. The first row of snake women wailed as the machine gun's volley blew them into sulfurous yellow powder.

This seems like a relatively straightforward specific question:

Q: Condtion of The British Minstry of Magic after Rufus Scrimgeour and before Kingsley Shacklebolt

The ManI wanted to know that during Pius Thicknesse's rule over the British Ministry of Magic what was happening at the Ministry of Magic. But it's closed as "too broad".

5:08 PM
Yeah, doesn't really look close-worthy to me (but could use some cleanup).

@Mithrandir Definitely some typos and the like.

"what are the stances of the ministry" is a bit vague, yeah. Honestly if the question was salvaged it could be ok, but 1-rep user doesn't seem likely to come back

@Jenayah Questions are not only for the ones who ask them.

@Alex sure, but rephrasing a question usually should "ask" the OP if it's ok

@Jenayah What I meant was that there should be objective standards for closing/reopening. Either a question is valid or it's not. Whether or not the one who asked is likely to come back shouldn't be a factor (except maybe for questions that don't necessarily apply to a broader base). If the question needs to be rephrased in order to be considered a valid question then as it stands now it's not a valid question, and can remain closed if no one fixes it.

5:17 PM
@Alex well, I'm the only one it engages but I voted to leave closed since it was still the same mess

well, I'm the only one it engages ?

I don't think I can vote again if it's edited buy as it is now, I don't deem it reopen-worthy
@Alex er, literal translation... Something along the lines of "it's only my opinion, I can't speak for others when I say that"

@Jenayah It's fine if you disagree with me. That is, after all the point of bringing it up – to hear others' opinions.

@Alex yup
For what it's worth (since I guess you voted to reopen) I suggest editing it first
Or leaving a comment
Stop me if you weren't the one who voted
That applies to anyone who voted to reopen though

@Jenayah Good point. In the past I used to leave a comment and then copy the comment here. I guess I forgot this time.
@Jenayah If it gets reopened you can easily find out.

5:21 PM
@Jenayah editing it's on my to-do list for the next few hours if nobody else does it first

I'm currently 1/7 on reopening questions. Not too bad.

@Mithrandir just saying that it'd have more chances of reopening if people looked at a correctly phrased question, not a typo-filled block
@Alex what do you mean?

@Jenayah I've voted to reopen 7 questions. Only one got reopened.
I was the first vote every time, I think.

Ah
Maybe edit them first?
Or ask OP if they're still around?

@Jenayah Most of the time there aren't necessarily huge formatting/grammar/typo issues.
@Jenayah I once informed someone that he could vote to reopen his own question. I don't think he did.

5:26 PM
@Alex well if the question was closed it was for a reason, the edit I mean is to get rid of that reason
@Alex oh right I remember a comment like that

@Jenayah Ah, well usually when I vote to reopen it's because I think the reason was incorrectly applied.
By the way @user103390 you can vote to reopen your question if you think it is not a duplicate. — Alex Aug 16 at 13:11

@Alex hence the comments, gotcha

5:41 PM
I made some edits to make the question more readable, without changing the question itself.

Q: Is Prince Charming a Charming or a Fortuna?

Alex DownsIn Shrek 2, Shrek looks through Fiona’s diary and flicks through pages that say: Mrs Fiona Charming However, The Fairy Godmother‘s name is Dama Fortuna, so presumably Fortuna is Charming’s surname as well. So if Fiona married Charming, she would be Fiona Fortuna. Is that right?

Darn. I just gave an answer to a fresh HNQ on a site where I'm not active. But it was so hard to resist!
Let's say it's their fault they make so many HNQ questions – nah, doesn't really work. :-(
At least I think it won't be a -5 rep autodeleted answer.

@b_jonas Isn't that essentially what happened with Rome and Christianity?

@b_jonas IS there something wrong with doing that?

10:25 PM
@Mithrandir Um, I'm not sure. Can you expand that a bit? I thought the story was that in the middle ages, everyone forgot to write and started to speak different languages because of geological isolation, then they all started to use Christianity which brought its priest capable of writing and so a more stable form of language, and so eventually the priest's language became the language of trade and diplomacy and most importantly culture and science.
But what happened to Rome? Didn't it just lose?
@Alex Yes, it's usually bad impulse answers not really considering the question well.
@Alex And results in twenty such bad answers on the same question.

@b_jonas I wasn't going to suspect you of writing a bad answer.

@Mithrandir In any case, feel free to answer, unless that's already covered by one of the answers, such as YElm's.
I think you know more about history than I do.
@Alex In these cases, I do.

@b_jonas I kinda just skimmed the question, so I might not have understood it 100%. Was mainly going by the title. I'll take another look... soon?

@Mithrandir Sadly the title isn't enoguh. And my answer is bad because it's also a gut reaction based only on the title.
As are most of those twenty answers for these sorts of HNQs, since people click on HNQs with a title they think they have an answer for.

Yep. This is why I never answer HNQs ;)

10:32 PM
I'll just delete it. It's for the better.

My second highest scoring answer was a Hot Network Question that took no effort, and less than a minute to write. However, it was still an absolutely correct answer (at least in my opinion). That said, it's a shame that I got 73 upvotes for it while answers that have taken me hours and a lot of effort have less than 5 upvotes.

@Alex I think everyone has posts like that (anyone who posts semi-frequently, that is).

@Mithrandir It's still a shame.

10:50 PM
@Alex But was it on a HNQ on a site you're normally not active on? A Sci Fi HNQ is fine if I'm already active on Sci Fi.

@b_jonas Yeah, it was this site. But I would have posted the same thing had it been a site that I wasn't active on.

@Alex All my highly voted answers on Sci Fi SE are for Harry Potter. I think some of them were HNQ, but it's hard to tell that for sure. But I was already a big Harry Potter fan when I posted them, and knew a lot about those topics. That's usually not the case when I answer a HNQ on another site.
My higher voted questions on Sci Fi SE, funniliy, have much more non-Harry-Potter ones. And some of them are Star Wars, which I really don't know. It's strange. How did I get high votes in Star Wars questions?

@b_jonas Yeah, I agree that good answers should be posted and bad answers should not be posted. It's just that it's not necessarily correlated to whether you're active on a site.

My highest voted question is a clickbait title HNQ style question about a Terry Pratchett novel that nobody reads.
@Alex Sure.
@Alex For a more disciplined user who doesn't jump on HNQs, their off-site answers might be only the rare ones when he actually can give a good answer.

@b_jonas I'd like to think that I haven't posted bad answers.

11:02 PM
@Alex Wouldn't everyone :P

Except for the one time that I did it deliberately.

@Alex ?

@Mithrandir True.

I know I've posted bad answers. I've just deleted (most?) of the ones I know are bad.

@Jenayah It wasn't deliberately "bad" but it was deliberately not the answer anyone was looking for.
But I wanted to make a certain point.
So I got a bunch of downvotes.
But one person appreciated it and gave it a bounty.

I awarded this bounty to Alex because these sources are a very important contribution to the discussion of many of the "Why X and not Y?" questions on Mi Yodeya. (Note: It happens to be that in this case, a good case can be made as to why it should not have used "Hamakom". However, this is an important point in general, so I awarded it here regardless of the fact that it is not the best answer to this question.) — רבות מחשבות Feb 20 at 18:56

(That reminds me that I've had a Mi Yodeya question on the back burner for a while that I should get around to writing out.)

@Mithrandir I have like 5 tabs with questions that I started and haven't got around to posting on various sites.
It can get annoying when every time you try to start a new question it is already populated with your old question.

Oh if it's a Mi Yodeya thing then I won't be able to see for myself it I think it's good or bad ^^

I have at least one post (question or answer) on a ridiculously high number of SE sites. I've seen this a lot of times but I'm always surprised because I keep forgetting about half of those single posts.

11:17 PM
@Jenayah Eh, it was basically a question asking why a certain word was used in a certain context instead of a different word. I posted an answer with a bunch of sources that basically said that these types of questions are pointless, because whichever way it chose you could ask why it didn't choose the other way.

Darn there are two questions I need to ask but am too lazy to learned the ways of the respective stack

@Jenayah Which sites, out of curiosity?

@Alex so it's basically a "well, interpretation is up to everyone" thing?
@Mithrandir Movies and HSM
Well I don't really "need" to ask

Movies.SE shouldn't be too hard. I'm not familiar with HSM.SE, though.

I just dropped by once in their respective chat and asked if it was on-topic, it was, I said I'd ask and never got the time/will combo to learn the way stuff was done over there, to phrase it right

11:24 PM
@Jenayah Eh, not exactly. Not that you should waste your time on it, but I did make sure that everything in my answer was translated into English, so if you wanted to I think you would be able to understand it.
It was more of "no interpretation is necessary".
And therefore "all interpretation is superfluous".

Yeah, less esoteric than other things. The question I had in mind would probably be less understandable :P
well *yawn* it is now 2:30AM and I've stopped being productive, so I should head to sleep
