Samuel JohnsonMankind uses nuclear weapons to finally breach the force field and discover that a signal eas activated to aliens. Our ability to breach the force field told aliens we were advanced enough to come back check on! I read this in college and can't find it again!

Q: Philip is MIA (old, trippy, scifi cartoon)

bbzI don't remember much, but I am sure about some aspects of the movie that might help. First of all, it's a cartoon, or an "animated movie", however you prefer. The style was pretty weird, and ugly, in a way. The main character was a dark haired boy in yellow jumpsuit named Philip. He was a space ...

Q: Story ID: Alien invasion involving tripod-style walkers, force fields and a human resistance force

MooThis is a short story I read during the late 1980s, probably in an anthology book. Earth has been invaded by aliens, who have proven to be unstoppable - governments and countries are rapidly conquered and only a guerrilla style resistance force is left. The aliens landed in one place, and they ...

Q: How can the androids have important jobs, Garland, Luft?

caballero17I don't remember how long Phillip K. Dick wrote the androids had been on Earth, I think they had merely arrived, but if that's the case, then, how can they have important jobs like Inspector Garland (that everyone at his fake office knew, including a human bounty hunter) or the singer Luba Luft (...

Q: What was the significance of these kids, if any?

AdamantAt the beginning of Runaways season 2, the parents are called by the police, who have supposedly found their kids. Of course, it's the wrong group. However, this other group of children is extremely similar to the Runaways in appearance: a Latino girl who looks vaguely like Molly with a very si...

Q: Trying to identify a short story from the 70s or 80s

CecilieI’m trying to identify a short story my dad read to me as a child. He said it was from a compilation of short-stories around the theme apocalypse and time-travel The plot line is something about scientists that find a way to send things back and forth between the present and the future. The story...

Q: Why did Yoda save Anakin and Obi-Wan instead of finishing Dooku on Geonosis?

EndgameLast I recalled, it is Yoda's quote: Train yourself to let go of everything you fear to lose. It has been mentioned lots of times in the canon that attachment is forbidden for a Jedi. While newbies were little bit "flexible" in this regard, how could Yoda, the grandmaster and the most power...

Q: Two sisters run into the woods. Eldest sister is captured by a witch and turned into a witch

Alissa IsaboeOkay, so when I was maybe 7 or 8 (so in 2005 or 2006) there was this show/movie I came across on Scifi. I don't remember a WHOLE lot about it clearly, but I remember there were two little girls, sisters, and they were running around together gleefully through the woods. They ran into a witch, a...

Q: Could Doyle have survived?

Filip KočicaI have been reading some Interstellar facts and came across one which caught my attention. It is not really a fact though - more like assumption. Irene WoodheadWho wrote this story and what was the name of the film? The generations of people "on board" think it's a planet. The stars have always been moving, no-one questions this. Q: Need help- identifying a time-travel short story

@Mithrandir Nothing's happened. We still don't know the exact triggers for the toilet paper roll hat or the circular waffles hat.
@Jenayah Yoda reveals that "there's another one". Harry was only the backup plan, he wasn't supposed to be the chosen one. The chosen one was originally supposed to be Freecell!
And once Harry died with one Horcrux too short, the Oracle had to fall back to his backup plan.

that'd make for a funny crossover

9:10 PM
@Jenayah Just search the vast archives of HP fanfic. you'll sure find something matching, one that crosses over SW and SMSM.

I won't search HP fanfic for stuff other than rep points and number of story-id answers :)

@Jenayah How about ... other rare badges? Like Reversal in the case of particularly bad questions?
Or hats?

Reversal on fanfic-id, I doubt it.
Hats I'm not sure I can earn much more (Waffles maybe, depending on criteria)
And indeed they do count towards Illuminator though this one's far away
and the usual story-id skill training
This is great!

@Jenayah It hasn't beem done on Sci Fi yet, scifi.stackexchange.com/a/180870/4918 is as close as it gets.
Also wow, that badge is rare, how do I even have it?

not fanfic-id, though

@Jenayah Oh! Will that ask people whan they saw the movie, and whether it was live action?
@Jenayah It's fanfic because Elon Musk is a fan.

@b_jonas mmmmh... not reallly
not really fanfic I mean, no denying the guy is a fan
@b_jonas it's only on SO for now
I doubt we'll get one for story-id
I even doubt SFF'll get one at all

9:46 PM
Oh, as for reversal badges. Can I ask something stupid? You know, to give someone the badge.
Or, let's phrase it this way. Can I ask something unpopular, which will get downvoted?
It's about a fantasy element too.

Chamber ch. 9: “‘It's not funny,’ said Ron, fiercely. ‘If you must know, when I was three, Fred turned my – my teddy bear into a dirty great spider because I broke his toy broomstick. You wouldn't like them either if you'd been holding your bear and suddenly it had too many legs and …’” I wonder how many fanfics are based on Ron's hesitation there.

@b_jonas probably not.
Chess offer is still up, by the way.

10:40 PM
@Jenayah If that's still up in around 10 hours I'll take you up on it :P

In 10 hours maybe ;p
In 18h hours there should be a me going to watch Aquaman :)

We couldn't find a pirated version of Ralph Breaks the Internet, so we just watched Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. My third time.

@Jenayah Not the Spiderman movie?

Anyway, I want to get at least seven hours of sleep tonight, so... g'nite

@Jenayah We'll see. I posted it.

Q: Is “A Bird in the Hoof” a reference to “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets?”

b_jonasIn Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets chapter 12, Harry Potter has a meeting with the most powerful wizard Headmaster Dumbledore, the one who everyone either respects or fears. In the meeting, but when Professor Dumbledore isn't present, Harry meets his pet bird. The bird looks ill and eve...

@b_jonas I don't see why it would be unpopular. Well written and seems quite resemblant indeed. UVed :)

@Jenayah Hmm. Let me check the cinema schedules about Spiderman actually.

@Jenayah Is the offer still standing?
@b_jonas I just got that one, actually.

@Alex currently in another game but I'll tell you when it's ended :)

10:56 PM
This offer seems vague. What timing are you even playing?

almost infinite, 3h each
I don't like timers :P
FWIW @b_jonas this is totally a reference to HP ahah, now to find an interview or stuff confirming it

@Jenayah I think it'll be easier to prove that it's not a reference by finding several earlier appearances of that tale in folk tales and comic books and whatnot.
Possibly all collected already on a tvtropes page.

A: Was the sealed letter ordering Hamlet's death a Biblical reference?

b_jonasI don't believe it's a specific reference to that story in the Book of Samuel. A message that instructs the recipient to execute the messenger is a well-known old trope that has appeared in many stories. TVTROPES WARNING The TvTropes page “Please Shoot the Messenger” contains many examples. ...

Why wouldn't it be a reference?

@Jenayah Dunno. It could be.

11:12 PM
That thing has referenced a lot of stuff, I don't see why they wouldn't reference HP
Heck, they even spoofed EFLA

@Jenayah They have certainly referenced Harry Potter. Discord did, at least.

or whoever's interested and gets here first :P

@Jenayah Argh, I just stepped away from my computer. I should be back within 10 minutes if no one’s snatched it by then.

“Some magic spell to cure disease” – Harry Potter reference by Discord in S4 E11.
Which doesn't mean they'd do that for an entire S1 episode.

Just got 1502 reputation... severely confused me
Turns out I got to the association bonus

11:26 PM
@Alex so the rather secretive Alex uses a computer he's aware people can "snatch", and refers to it as "my computer". Family? Group project? Cybercafé with overzealous attachment to one particular device? Will we ever get to know? :P
@CorvoAttano take a screenshot
also, congrats :)

@Jenayah And you do realize that for such a question, I emphasize the similar elements, and ignore everything else, to make it a clickbait, right?

sure sure
you're not the first one to notice it on the Big Internet, though. Still haven't found any interview or stuff :P

Of course in S4 E11 the viewpoint characters are going on a quest to get rare potion ingredients…
And of course there's time travel in both of them now :-(

@b_jonas there might be time travel, but are there time-traveling robots?

And secrets left by a famous wizard from a thousand years ago.
@Jenayah Hmm. Not in Harry Potter.

11:30 PM
eh. Not any confirmed, at least

@Jenayah Let me grab the screenshot from S5 E25 or E26.

@Jenayah Am I rather secretive? Also, I used an unclear pronoun (apologies); I was actually referring to the chess game and not the computer.

Q: Fantasy YA book from novel from late 80s or before

dgoTrying to remember a book. I read it as a tween in the late 80s. Here’s what I got so far: A boy has to go on some kind of quest in another dimension (kind of like Narnia in that it was right there, but in a different universe that he got to by some normal way). He is on the quest for someon...

@Alex eh, the mystery thickens again! :P

@Jenayah What's the mystery?
(And I'm back.)
Computer's fine.

11:34 PM
^ That's as close as I remember MLP gets to time-traveling robots.

Looks like someone beat me to the game, though.

Although Pinkie might be able to tell something closer.
@Jenayah Yeah, you'll have to wait for the second opera or musical in the Cursed Child cycle.

@Alex well we don't know stuff like your age group, possible location, gender... But it's actually funnier without knowing, it's part of the "persona" I imagine of you now :P
@Alex crap that wasn't you? xD

@Jenayah No.'

too bad, that pawn was an easy snack :P

11:37 PM
Maybe someone did snatch my computer after all?

@Jenayah You've asserted all three at some point.
@Jenayah This one's me.

@Alex assertion =/= proof :P

@Jenayah True. So what's this persona?

Dunno. That's the whole point of it :D

11:39 PM
Well your imagination is not projecting a blank page, is it?

Technically, my imagination doesn't return a face for any of you :P

@Alex You probably live in America, from the times you're posting at.
And I imagine that you're male.

@b_jonas why would he? You're here rather late for someone in Hungarian time zone :P
I do imagine Alex being male as well

@Jenayah Yes, but Alex has posts from later and not many from earlier. I have posts in the European morning.
Besides, I already know where I live, and have told it so many times, so guessing from the timezone is redundant.

I know you're Hungarian, I meant that if I had to guess where you were based on your activity peaks, I probably wouldn't pick Hungary :)
But I won't deny the benefits of night owl life :D

11:46 PM
@Jenayah My Sci Fi profile page specifically gives my location as Hungary.

I don't think there's any hour of the day that I haven't posted at.

It could lie of course, but then I also have photos from Hungary online.

I'm not saying you aren't in Hungary :p

So we have two votes for male...

@Alex Perhaps there's none where you haven't posted at all, but there are some where you posted less frequently.

11:56 PM
@b_jonas That could be for any number of reasons, though.

@Alex Yes, but it usually gives away something about the user's continent.
It's not a sure thing, but it is a good sign.
A moment, I'm trying to get MS SQL to cooperate so I can do this directly in data.stackexchange, not on client side.
