Q: Movie about temple run by women

mikaThis sounds a bit crazy, but back in the 90s as a child I saw a movie (at least twice) that had roughly this plot: There was a temple or castle/fortress that only women were permitted to enter. There was something important and special inside that was vital for the world or something (magical th...

Let's undelete the answer by this user on the question about talking dragons. It's not all that good, but, with the edits, it certainly constitutes an answer.

Q: How many of the [tag:in-memoriam] posts are for writers compared to how many for actors?

user14111How many of the in-memoriam posts here are for stfantasy writers (or editors or artists) compared with how many for actors (or directors)? If someone has both written and acted, go with what they're best known for.

@Adamant sure, it does now. The first answer was just a lot of words without much meaning.

@SQB You don't like badger floofs? :(

This can be done a) for pure entertainment b) to get recommendations of books / motion pictures c) the statistics are also interesting for writers and world builders because they see what their target group is interested in (high fantasy vs. earthly fantasy, which is more successful and other queries).
I think I've asked that before, but I'll ask it once more: Is Meta an appropriate place for each of us to give a top-10 scifi books / movies to read or not? Otherwise, this might be an interesting idea for the blog. We could do a quick user survey (Google form or so) that everyone fills out and combine and talk about the results in a blog segment like What SFF has read... and What SFF has seen....
Oopsie, a Connection timeout reversed the order of my messages.

@Narusan Doesn't hurt if you ask on meta :) We've had fun there before, I don't see why we shouldn't have more fun. Blog sounds like a good place to report the results.
There used to be a dedicated room for the blog, I'll see if I can find it.

@Gallifreyan Ask on Meta if that's appropriate, or the question itself? Dunno how to phrase that though. Please list works of sf&f below that you really enjoyed and explain why you enjoyed them? Or something like list your top10 with explanation why

@Narusan I'd say that you should say on Meta What are you top 10 SFF books and give a short reason why. Maybe if you restrict reasons to a certain character limit.

@Narusan Either, I guess :) I can see how it may be controversial, but it's not too off-topic for meta. Some may say it's too broad, but...
You know, Jack B. Nimble (who runs the blog) does quarterly "best answer/best question" lists. You could contact him and arrange your top-10 list thusly. It'd definitely survive on meta if it's blog-related.

@Gallifreyan Is there any other way to contact someone apart from pinging here? He didn't list contact details on his user page.
@JackBNimble Do you think it's possible to have an article in the SFF blog about what books the Community read and why? There could be a Meta post with everyone listing their top10, I'd be happy to go through all the posts and sort them. It would be interesting for us to see what other people like and why, you get good book recommendations for upcoming vacations, and future writers and worldbuilders get an idea of what their audience wants.

He's not pingable here. Wait...
But it's frozen.

Is the blog still going?

Of course, there was a new post not so long ago
Last month's post.

@Kimball Remember this is from Philosopher's Stone, which was a rather less serious and more child-friendly book than most of the others. At this point I imagine not too much of the overarching plot had been mapped out and a lot of things were chosen willy-nilly. — Rand al'Thor 4 hours ago
^ That was always exactly my impression too, that JKR figured out all the story between the first and second book, and George Lucassed (or selectively forgotten) that part later a bit. She didn't even deny that all that clearly in the interviews. She said that the character of Harry and the magic school came to her in the train, but didn't specifically say that she had the story outlined before PS.
But I'd be interested in more specifics about that.

Q: How much of Harry Potter was preplanned and how much was improvised?

DrewIf we chart out a 2 tiered timeline, the upper tier being the in-universe events and the lower tier being the period in which J. K. Rowling is writing the Harry Potter books, does the lower tier ever out-pace the upper tier? In other words, as an example, when she wrote Harry Potter and the Phil...

That's a bit relevant

A: How much of Harry Potter was preplanned and how much was improvised?

PearsonArtPhotoMost of the story was outlined beforehand, especially between the time that book 1 and 2 were published. In fact, one of the first things written in the Harry Potter universe was the last chapter of book 7 (Source). Of course, even the most well planned large work has deviances, and there were se...

^ That yes, but that answer doesn't offer much proof.
The one DVK links about catching the Snitch in PS is definitely convincing though.
That proves JKR did know at least some of Dumbledore's plan when she wrote PS.

Q: Does Neil Gaiman's "Mouse" criticise abortion?

GallifreyanThe short story "Mouse", collected among other places in Smoke and Mirrors, is about a man who is buying a trap to get rid of the mouse in his house. He doesn't want to kill the mouse, so he buys a safe trap. Meanwhile, at home, his wife seems pregnant. She goes away for what seems to be an abo...
