Q: Who is the woman of a similar age to Wit?

BeofettIn *Words of Radiance *, chapter 55, after Shallan hugs Wit (aka Hoid), Adolin jealously tells Wit: Stick to women your own age. To which Wit cryptically replies: Well, that might be a little harder. I think there's only one of those around these parts, and she and I never did get along. A...

Q: Looking for short story about town heating up and 3 kids

ChrisI thought it was a Ray Bradbury, but I can't seem to find it. There's something going on where the world (or that town) is getting hotter and hotter, and there's three kids who have bikes. I think they go into this tunnel or something? And it gets hotter and hotter. I don't really remember, but...

Q: Looking for oldish short story

KurenaiXIIII read this one two+ decades ago, I think in Omni magazine. It was a story told from the father's perspective--he's the CEO of a company that finds alien technology and is studying it, then his daughter for some reason (accident? sickness?) has to undergo an experimental treatment using their te...

Q: Who is the rightful heir to sit on iron throne?

anvesh.veerelliThis might be a duplicate or debatable. But as far as the releases of the books & TV series. Who should be ruling Westeros as per the laws of that continent? Ignore usurpers. Is it Daenerys Targaryen or Jon Snow(Targaryen)?

Too bad the question who would win, Gandalf or Voldemort, was closed. The question was not necessarily about Gandalf and Voldemort, but any wizard from each of the universes. That is totally answerable.

@SQB Do you want a question "Who would win, Lina Inverse or Allanon"?

Q: Are their any changes in the Japanese edition of Harry Potter?

RecelicaWhilst reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stome, I noticed mild differences between it and the British version. (Sherbet lemons became lemon drops. Moterbike became motercycle etc) Of course, this was done to make it more accessible to Americans, but it got me wondering if they regionized it...

ImproveThe school Harry Potter attends is called Hogwarts. SQB 'Have you got it here?' [Bilbo] asked in a whisper. 'I can't help feeling curious, you know, after all I've heard. I should very much like just to peep at it again.' (...) When he had dressed, Frodo found that while he slept the Ring had been hung about his neck on a new chain, light...

Q: Why are people so afraid of the Doctor?

sh5164In the now classic TV show Doctor Who, all the enemies of the Doctor are scared only by hearing his name, everyone in the show says he's invincible and technically he always wins. Q: Does Tolkien's Legendarium have tiers of canonicity?

DisturbedNeoMany big Sci-Fi and Fantasy works, such as Harry Potter and Star Wars, have so much material spanning multiple media types that they have to be pruned every now and again and redefine different levels of canonicity. For example, before Disney came along, there were (I believe) 5 different types o...

Q: If Hazel is so cheerful and bright all the time, does this mean that Pluto has a cheerful side to him?

Pritt BalagopalWe know Pluto (Hades) as the Lord of the Underworld and Riches. He has a rather bitter personality and I find him rather "pessimistic", seeing the darker side of everything. Nico di Angelo appears to have inherited this personality trait from him. However, we see Hazel as very cheerful, not so ...

@DaaaahWhoosh That bastard.
This is ironic because the game series got a lot of flak from anti-LGBT people for allowing the protagonist to have same-sex relationships with NPCs.

yeah, I was confused when I saw his name on it.

Who knows, maybe he changed his mind.

That is pretty ironic.

yeah, one can hope.

6:24 PM
I hope he represents the material well. I'm sure I'll hear flak about him being on its creative team though from the LGBT community.

do you recall that movie where here mom and father are the same person who gives birth to the herself. Don't recall the name

All the stuff described there is pre-2013, and four years is plenty of time for people to have a significant change of mind.

Q: Identify DC Comic Book With Alien Invasion/Occupation of Earth

@DaaaahWhoosh Saber--hardcore
(is this European saber, or Chinese?)

@DukeZhou so far, it's a piece of PVC. I'm waiting on people in my HEMA club to get around to teaching me something other than longsword, figured I'd get started on the exercises so I'd be ready

My advice is train shirtless like they do in the Balkans--nothing like the sting of flexible steel (or pvc) on the bare skin to incentivize good parrying technique
Chinese dagger forms rely heavily on the reverse grip, but it's a very specific kind of use.

dagger I can understand, bastard sword less so

There are moves in empty-hand forms that are secretly practice for drawing a boot dagger (reverse grip), slashing up and stabbing down, before they realize you have a blade
@DaaaahWhoosh Totally agree re: swords
Giving up the range of the sword is lunacy
bad strategy
There are limited uses, but no swordsperson worth their salt would every utilize a backhand sword grip if they had another option
In Chinese sword (probably originating with Wudang) , you do see opening and closing moves with a backhanded grip, and these moves do have practical martial intent, but most practitioner either don't know the intent or can't express it, so that the movement just come off as "flowery"
But again the caveat that just because you practice the technique, it doesn't mean you want to use it if you can help it
(unless you so outclass the opponent that you're just toying with them;)
much better to simply "stick 'em with the pointy end"
if possible, just two inches into the abdomen to pierce the organs
The famous "Single Drop of Red"
which connotes the highest level of mastery ;)

8:46 PM
yeah, currently I'm at the "close your eyes and hope something good happens" stage. It's going to take a while before I can willingly walk into an opponent's range without fear.

Now that's a saber
I like European saber too, very direct, but not oriented toward massively multi-opponent situations

Think we should have a Meta poll for the best chat.stackexchange main-room name?
Give those stuck-up Metasters something to downvote and close?
@DukeZhou So, that obsession with big swords predates all those manga and anime and Dynasty Warrior games?

11:25 PM
@can‐ned_food oh yes :)
That particular practitioner is one of the last generation to actually use those things in combat, which extended a bit into the gunpowder era.
If you like Manga and Dynasty Warriors, I highly recommend The Water Margin
The wikipedia doesn't give an indication of how much of the stories involve battles and weapons, both standard and exotic, with description of the weapons themselves and various techniques (which is basically like 70% of the books.)
There are a few editions in English: Outlaws of the Marsh
PS You have to read Romance of the Three Kingdoms if you want to get the context for Lü Bu's bad-#ssery, but many people consider these books "boring"
Water Margin/Outlaws of the Marsh, by contrast, is much more of an adventure.

Just saying:
The answer to User84740's question, "Who translated this?" is Tadhg Morris, a PhD candidate at the Centre for Medieval Studies in Toronto, who, though competent in Middle Irish, actually specializes in Classical Gaelic bardic verse. — Tadhg Morris 1 hour ago
