Nucleon = Proton + neutron
Let's say the Mass of one Atom = $M_A$
now, the mass of a nucleon >> mass of electron
Hence, at your level and in your book(I presume), they are assuming the entirety of the mass of the atom is concentrated in the nucleus.
Now, let the mass of one nucleon = $M_N$
Since the atomic mass = total mass of all the nucleons, we can say, that:
$$M_A = n*M_N$$
where, n = number of nucleons
Thus, you get that formula that you wrote.

Ohk. Thanks a lot
Here, they consider nucleon as mass of proton or neutron. Not proton + neutron. Why is that @Sid
Sid
See, let me clarify.
Nucleon is all the.. uh.. particles inside the nucleus
That is, protons, neutrons, etc.
so, one proton = one nucleon. one neutron = one nucleon.
So, when we consider the mass of one nucleon, we are talking about the mass of one proton or the mass of one neutron.
and since, they are approximately same, we can get that formula of yours.
Sarabsri mt
@Sid here. You said that nucleon is all thing inside nucleus
so inside 1 nucleon is 1 proton and 1 neutron right
Sid
In reality, the mass of a neutron is slightly greater. So, to be more precise, your atomic mass should be $$M_p * n_p + M_n * n_n$$
Sarabsri mt
Ohk.

where Mp = mass of proton, np = number of protons, Mn = mass of neutrons and nn = number of neutrons.
Sarabsri mt
it’s like just an approximation they consider
Sid
@Sarabsrimt each particle is a nucleon.
Sarabsri mt
@Sid ok
Sid
Proton is a nucleon. Neutron is a nucleon.
Sarabsri mt
@Sid ok
Got it better now.@Sid Thanks a lot.
@Sid Got this too.
