@DavidS Oh no David, the donut situation is still ongoing (as recently as last week). I'm still at the same place of work, where I do in fact have a few vegan coworkers also.

you got my vote on that one @nic
loved the P.S. especially, haha

I still don't think this question about is fish a healthy food is good for the site, even after the recent edits. Asking if something is healthy is both subjective and overly broad. Asking about specifically fish is just barely on-topic, and mostly because there is a large contingent of people that don't consider fish meat to be meat. This message is addressed to the person who voted to reopen the question.

this jumped out at me after my whining about bad lunch options from work: workplace.stackexchange.com/questions/149639/…
clearly we're not alone with this problem

@DavidS I did finally end up trying to answer this question in a productive manner. All I succeeded in doing is showing that the question is un-answerable.

@Nic It's surprising how nice a simple dish can be if it's prepared properly with good ingredients isn't it.
@Nic We could of course distill it down to a number, yes it'll be $1,000,000,000 if you want to not go vegan.
@Malavika Hello :)
and hi Avazula, I see you lurking there.
10:27
bzzbzz
Busy bee :D

@Malavika Gifts are already bought, I need to fetch them on Saturday. Still need to buy chocolate for the relatives but overall I managed to avoid the winter holiday shopping crowds. Do you celebrate Christmas?

Q: Does eating insects save lives?

David LehnherrI've been a vegetarian for almost 9 years and became a vegan 1.5 years ago. So I really believe in not killing animals. So, you may ask yourself, why am I asking this question? What "bugged" my for several years is, that animals like mice and moles die while harvesting/growing plants. So eating...

first thought, doesn't save insect lives! :P
who knows, I mean maybe mice and moles and things die more in industrial agriculture than organic.
oh oh maybe that's an answer
if your goal is save mice and voles and moles
is the type of agriculture a bigger factor
eating insects seems like a strange way to save mice
in that context
also is the plan to eat insects instead of vegetables? they are not analogous nutritionally AFAIK
I wish I could be bothered to write researched answers like Nic.
indeed
I agree
but then "does it save lives" wouldn't be biology
11:25
that's interesting. the first link.
@Nic the question has good answers now :)
@Nic I voted to leave closed. I don't think the question has improved
Agreed
I'm working on an answer .. I think I have something here
@Nic great answer
@avazula oooh what for?
@skippy619 definitely not
@Zanna the insect thing
11:36
:)
12:09
pfew. That was a long answer

@avazula awesome :)
I didn't understand what you meant by "interesting" in your answer
> on a dietary aspect, it's not more interesting to eat insects than plants.
I don't understand what that sentence is intended to convey
@Zanna Well, I meant that you can find the same amount of important nutrients in plants ... I'll try to rephrase
> If they're comparable in their ability to feel pain, then as a vegan you should aim at hurting the smallest possible number of them - which is why it wouldn't be interesting to do so.
this is another sentence I don't understand
and here
> From a vegan and a philosophical point of view, it wouldn't be interesting to eat insects in an attempt of preserving rodents because that'd end up in way more animals getting killed in the process.
when you say interesting do you mean, like, effective?
yep
Sorry, I was kinda in a hurry when I wrote this and it was getting long already
hey there's no need to apologise
I realise that I may be going the wrong way about raising this doubt
commenting might have been more helpful
but I felt that it might take a lot of back and forth
and here you are in chat
@Zanna I think so too :)
15:39
I want to say that, in the dialects of English that are familiar to me, interesting does not convey the meaning of effective or beneficial, useful, advantageous etc
@Zanna English is not your mother tongue?
so, for me, those instances of it in your answer don't succeed in conveying what I think they want to convey
English is my first and only language, alas
okay. I rephrased but sadly I don't have much time to get back to it again (Christmas office party), so I hope it'll do it, or else I'll have to fine tune it tomorrow again
Thank you for the feedback :)
but still, there are plenty of dialects of English I'm not really familiar with and things might be different in those dialects :)
thanks for writing the answer!
I'd be happy to have a go at copy editing it myself if you like. Obviously you could and should re-edit it or roll back if you didn't like my edit
hope the office party is fun and has great vegan treats/snacks/food/whatever you like
@Zanna Please, if you think there are still things left unclear, do so! But I wouldn't want to bother you with it
@Zanna I'm autistic and these events are actually quite draining for me because of that. But I managed to skip the surprise activity so I'm relieved a bit at least :)
15:46
not at all, I like editing
@avazula oh phew! surprise activity! hides in bathroom at the thought
@Zanna yeah ... shudders
wow, talk
surprise activity? who would want that?
especially in a work context with people you might not be comfortable with
our work christmas party is tomorrow
some of us will leave shortly after the food and before the drinking increases and karaoke starts
and we'll probably come back to the office and play games and go home early :D
@avazula I usually find social events exhausting too, but sometimes I find an interesting person (often a child) and get into a really in-depth conversation or game or some other well-structured activity (like making something) with them and then I enjoy myself a lot. Or I get to dance and totally ignore everyone :D
I find big groups of people sort of stressful, always have
smoking is great for taking a break but unfortunately it's not good for being healthy
@DavidS hahaha fact
16:00
I often go out with the smokers for some 'fresh air'
lol
because you get a chance to go outside and maybe talk to a small group of people in the quiet
can't tolerate noise, have sensitive hearing
yeah
well I can tolerate loud noise I want to hear (like music I like)
@DavidS me too. I wear earplugs to any place there will be music
16:02
apparently loud noise you dont want to hear actually causes your body to release stress hormones
so your cortisol levels go up and that's bad for you
@zanna yes!
I mean public music
yes me too
I tried 'manning up' as I was told by everyone.
like at a party/function of some kind or in a bar etc
I now have tinnitus.
so that didn't work.
@DavidS worst instruction ever :(
16:03
Yeah.
tbf the events that really did the harm weren't times when I was told to man up
I just forgot ear protection and decided to go anyway
people make fun of me too but I'm like "joke's on you, unless you've got a spare set of ears"
truth
oh oh
are you married?
I went to some loud things when I was younger and I'm sad about it
@DavidS lol lol there was a software error so not quite XD
software error :P
have to endure more bureaucracy
they couldn't register it!
16:05
okay, keep me updated.
if you don't mind.
or don't, if you do
hahaha I'm told it's supposed to be a secret for now
oops!
XD
17:03
I'm so glad I found friendly internet introverts!

My company is threatening to make us go to 2 xmas events ...
@skippy619 oh dear. That sounds awful
They left for the activity :D now I'm all alone at work o/

Q: Are there any hazards involved in eating old vegetables?

RockPaperLizardIf someone chooses to store raw animal meat in a refrigerator for consumption, it generally cannot be stored for very long before it becomes dangerous to eat. I'm not sure of the entire reason why, but I assume that bacteria growth is a large contributing factor. What about vegetables? A coupl...
