are most commercial APL customers on Dyalog now, or there are still some antiquated APLs out there?
I'm pretty sure most are on APL2 and APL+, not sure about APLX.
mainframe stuff probably?
APL2, yeah. Now APL+ and APLX though.
probably with custom AP
For sure.
But these three aren't entirely antiquated. APL2 has complex numbers, APL+ has control structures, and APLX has OOP.
20:20
yeah that's true
Of course, none of them are 64-bit or Unicode…
probably no budget to upgrade that either.
might not even be supported by a vendor
lol yes, that's true, no Unicode.
I believe they all have plenty of money. APLX is a only goner because the side business of MicroAPL far outgrew the APL business. APL2 was just sold off, but at least the buyer is looking into some going somewhere with it. APL+ has a completely overhauled 64-bit version in the works.
Oh, and every single only of these three have an IDE that's superior to Dyalog's :-(
I think APL2 had no runtime license fees
which probably helped its deployment.
I mean other than mainframe support fees :)
is dyalog working on a m1 cpu port?
16KB pages...
might break a thing or two
20:37
@JeromeIbanes It is on the roadmap, especially as we anyway want to release 64-bit ARM builds.
good to hear
I am told you can no longer buy x86 macbook pros
And Windows 11 is 64-bit only.
The days of 32-bit are counted.
can W11 run 32-bit binaries?
I'm pretty sure it can.
well at least that gives them a bit of a runway
21:12
Why APL is full of arrays?
Because it is an array-oriented programming language.
21:31
Wow, I request a change in github.com/abrudz/aplcart and Adam has the issue closed within 5 minutes. Thanks Adam!
Btw, that particular task of knowing how to convert a number to scientific notation text allegedly saved someone a few hours of research :)
Why do C++ programmers get paid less than APL programmers?
@PaulMansour because To make APL more fun
@Adám ^ correct?
Because they never get arrays.
I'm waiting for the punchline to "Why is APL full of arrays?"
Lol, I guess there's even data to back that joke up insights.stackoverflow.com/survey/2021#work-salary
this link is more direct insights.stackoverflow.com/survey/…
22:20
@Adám Is that an antijoke?
@JoshD Separate scatterplots for each language would've been nice there, it's hard to tell what the whole range of salaries and experiences is from just the average
22:46
Ooo the newest survey has been released, I always find these interesting
US salaries are pretty mental, $70K avg for 'student'?!
Wild
That could be very little depending on the state tbf. > The typical home value of homes in Los Angeles is $921,494.
The US's economic climate is very diverse, I'd be surprised if the averages aren't skewed by extremes like LA, especially since the wealthier states are the most "productive"
Huh, APL somehow got onto this list
50/50 loved/dreaded
> APL $75,631
I now understand the earlier conversation, where do I sign up :P
Oof, almost 18 years of experience for that wage. I guess I'll hold out a bit longer
23:03
have to feel bad for delphi devs getting 48k with 19 years of experience
Indeed
Can I upload a picture, as a suggestion for the APL logo? It is very minimalistic and based on my user picture/avatar.
you can, but no offense, it just looks too much like the among us character to be taken seriously as a logo
:)
I made it in just one color. So no among us anymore ...
I am not allowed I think to send a picture
23:44
@rak1507 I've never doubt it was an Among Us character until now...
