11:03 PM
totally unrelated:

How 'bout:

yay we have a winner

Too much apple

unless someone has an idea with an apple and an array

There's always the APL Wiki logo:
@Bubbler Any ideas, then? How to deapplify?
Could we add a green ∇ leaf?

11:13 PM
Not much idea

<phantomics> I like the ⍣ power operator as a logo, a simple memorable shape that isn't known anywhere outside APL
<phantomics> Apples were cool in the 70s but now risk confusion with Apple Computer

^ this might work, it's my favorite symbol too

But isn't commonly supported. Remember that is has to be a universal APL logo.
phantomics: I don't think this stylised script apple risks that.

For an "array" feel, I was thinking of ⋄ ⊂'APL'

@Bubbler APL

11:17 PM
(forgot that current bot has boxing off)

With a leaf:
@Bubbler We should fix that.
@Bubbler How about:
┌─┬─┬─┐
│A│P│L│
└─┴─┴─┘

<phantomics> Given my propensity for pixel art I'm thinking of the letters APL in a low-res pixel font

@Adám Yeah, I was thinking of that too
though not sure how universal that notation(?) is

@Bubbler Not very. This is the classic:
┌→────────────┐
│ ┌→┐ ┌→┐ ┌→┐ │
│ │A│ │P│ │L│ │
│ └─┘ └─┘ └─┘ │
└∊────────────┘

<phantomics> I'd simplify that to just a box with the ┌→ characters at the upper left containing some kind of stylized APL letters
<phantomics> The ┌→ boxes are another classic APL image, although like ⍣ not present in all implementations

11:25 PM
How about:
┌→──┐
↓APL│
└───┘
phantomics: I think all major implementations have that as a util fn.

phantomics: how about
very low-res

Or even a representation of 2 2⍴'APL '
(maybe a cool symbol in the place of blank)

AP
L⋄

<phantomics> Wezl: that's neat

@Wezl OK, that's taking it too far!
@Bubbler I think that loses the meaning.

11:27 PM
<phantomics> Here's an example of a font: nfggames.com/system/arcade/arcade.php/y-robot/z-0/dbl-2/x-apl
<phantomics> The letter spacing is way off but you can see what they look like, put them, close together and stylize them in some way, like with a pixel gradient

phantomics: This?

<phantomics> That's neat
<phantomics> I'll get into the APL Orchard chat and post some drafts sometime

You're already here.

<phantomics> Via the APLBot, through which I can't post images
<phantomics> Btw I hadn't heard of that Iverson centenary panel until just now, is there any chance there'll be more seats available?

No, your SE chat account is here too.
It is online, so I don't think there's a limit.
> sold out
Oh.
I'll try to ask Stephen Taylor why that is.

11:39 PM
Thanks

Serif version:

<phantomics> That font would look good just by itself with no boxes

<phantomics> A glider/APL combo, that is really cool
<phantomics> A bit too complicated for a general purpose logo but it'd make a great book cover or something

phantomics: why too complicated? I made it with a special-purpose ascii-art font, but it's just text
 +-+-+-+
 |a|*|!|
 +-+-+-+
 |p|l|*|

 |*|*|*|

11:45 PM
<phantomics> Neat, it's just that the overall shape is quite busy, for instance you could never use this as a website favicon
<phantomics> What's the ascii art font?

Slight concession to roundedness:

<phantomics> Cool

I really like my P and L but I'm less happy with the A. Any ideas?

you can keep the top serif

11:49 PM
@Adám Snip the inside part of each serif?

<phantomics> Maybe have the A serifs only stick out of the edges
<phantomics> Marshall just what I was thinking

And then make the outer serifs normal size instead of half?

Whatever looks good. My guess is not much further out than it goes now.
The top serif did look nice. I guess you could also keep the upper left corner square instead of rounding it.

I could even add a top-right serif.

<phantomics> The serifs could be made to flow together if the letters are taken out of the grid

11:53 PM

phantomics: for the centenerary panel, Roger says there was a limit of 100 that was increased to 500, but maybe they haven't updated the event page. jsoftware.com/pipermail/programming/2020-December/057051.html

phantomics, except L
100 was way too little considering the attendance at Dyalog '20.

<phantomics> Thanks, I'll check back later

now the a almost looks like an r

Yeah.

11:55 PM
@Adám Maybe cheat a little and move the A to the right to keep it visually balanced? If you're keeping that style.

<phantomics> @Adám you could put the serif at the A's upper right and flow it to the P's upper left, you could also connect the P and the L's lower serifs, but this aesthetic only works without the grid

I think connecting lower serifs of P and L would make it unreadable, but I'll try.

<phantomics> I'd say don't actually connect them, have them come together with a thin gap in between

phantomics: But then people will start wondering why Han and Luke never show up.

?

11:57 PM
<phantomics> Haha star wars style
<phantomics> Connecting letters like that is the Star Wars logo font style
<phantomics> Taking off now but when I get some time in Inkscape I can make a demo of what I mean

Only ST and RS are connected there.
