room topic changed to SE Podcast Live Chat: livestream.com/stackexchange / Next Episode: Tuesday 9/13 @ 3:00pm EDT (no tags)

2 hours later…
19:09
Ha! We're early this week!
still setting up, Joel is at a conference so it's a weird setup
excuses.....
All the time before you start is when your setup works right at first go
Is this another freeballing episode?
BTW @JeffAtwood - I'd updated the DIY FAQ a couple of days before you used it as an example of one that wasn't updated ;)
it was in the context of updating it
19:17
Ah
Can anyone in the chat room actually hear us?
Strap that cam onto the chest and walk around with Radiohead
wierd chat did not work on chrome , apparently local storage is disabled
No sound here
We can hear your emotions and that's it
19:18
here too
we may not have a livestream on this particular call
wow thats some real estate on a monitor
:-)
damn it
however, if you have questions for us, do ask them here
and here I was hoping to see you at 1 am India time instead of missing it at around 3am :-)
@JeffAtwood alas
ah music..
that's where Joel is.. has not launched his secret thing yet
yay! we can hear you now!
live stream should be working now
excellent!!
19:20
yay sound
all sounds good right?
sounds good to me
yeah. both of them loud and clear
I hear chatters
Who are we seeing?
19:22
I wasn't expecting to be on camera you guys so like... no judging, okay?
Location may matter in terms of quality of life and overall salary
>waves<
back
This isn't ELU
19:23
I AM JUDGING
I love judging people!
@KateyΨ Hello
Hello @ChrisF!
BTW today is programmers day
Thought we weren't going to hot or not this room. But, if the employees are judging, what are we doing?
19:24
Hi everyone!
Happy programmer's day!
they have another office now?
did anyone notice the lag on the huge monitor as the person walked by?
@Joel It's the same people that use Google to search for Facebook rather than typing facebook.com or (heaven forfend) actually bookmark the site.
any questions for me and Joel?
19:26
Jeff, you guys have another office now?
what is SE's user:employee ratio?
i'm tempted to respond: large.
@Pandincus no, the camera just moved for this week
not large as in Facebook I think
19:28
Google+ is filthy with user ambassadors
So when do I start getting paid ;)
@ChrisF you do. in t-shirts.
Is StackExchange considering a freemium model? If so, what paid services will be provided?
@ChrisF They are putting clothes on your back.
@BilltheLizard, @AarthiDevanathan so very true
In the last podcast it was said that stackexchange will help support stackexchange meetups across the world , how does one go about the process? and will it go to all the way to India?( as in other end of the world)
OK deal! When do I start? :p
engineers still are the biggest team at the company
community/chaos is rapidly catching up though
Will StackExchange ever have a plug into an IDE error spit out? where you can click from eclipse or VS or whatever to see answers on StackExchange?
How ya feel about Location based SE sites ie. NewYork.StackExchange.com ? (ie. What is the fastest, most economical way to get to La Guardia from the Financial District?)
19:33

Q: Stacklipse - Eclipse plugin preview

chenyuejieAbout Stacklipse is an eclipse plugin that utilizes stackapps api to provide a search view in Eclipse. Currently just provide a prototype preview. Screenshot License EPL Download http://code.google.com/a/eclipselabs.org/p/stacklipse/downloads/list Install Just copy the stacklipse_1.0.0....

YEA!
@SamTheBrandΨ didn't we talk about it, and the problem is the audience?
Thank you, Joel, I absolutely agree!
no it would be awesome
i would totally live in a bouncy house 24/7.
2
Party at Jeff's house? We're ALL invited?
19:36
is it a bouncy house?
It's only a bouncy house 12/3.5
The rest of the time it's a regular house
sad but true sterotype :-/
I filtered the hyphen site out of my Google results :)

19:40
we should totally have plushies
Where is SE hosted?
@RaviVyas It's a numbers game. If the same proportion of the U.S. population were trying to program for a living, we'd have the same problem here.
The SO logo
19:41
unicorn!
We need a StackExchange mascot! A Unicorn!!
Jin
Jin

Jin
Jin
oh wait..
+1 bacon!
19:41
the bobblehead
oh man
@BilltheLizard true... but its frustating when people who have been coding for years can not do simple stuff
Unicorn with narwhal flippers
@random that is amazing.
19:41
We want a picture of the Joel bobblehead
Jeeves is a VALET /wodehouserage
And we all know when the narwhal bacons
nerd merit badges
@KateyΨ he was loaned out a few times to go be a butler in other households
19:42
@random I was trying to find the picture of @RebeccaChernoff in the SE costume, but I can't find it now
> Jeeves is a valet, not a butler - that is, he serves a man and not a household. However, Bertie Wooster has lent out Jeeves as a butler on several occasions, and notes: "If the call comes, he can buttle with the best of them."
Reginald Jeeves is a fictional character in the short stories and novels of P. G. Wodehouse, being the "personal gentleman's gentleman" (valet) of Bertie Wooster (Bertram Wilberforce Wooster). Created in 1915, Jeeves would continue to appear in Wodehouse's works until his final, completed, novel Aunts Aren't Gentlemen in 1974, making him Wodehouse's most famous character. The name "Jeeves" comes from Percy Jeeves, a Warwickshire cricketer killed in the First World War. Both the name "Jeeves" and the character of Jeeves have come to be thought of as the quintessential name and nature...
@jeff don't forget to mention that they're VELCRO-BACKED badges. which is awesome.
We are in a fight forever, @Abby
you're just mad i can buttle better than you
Lending people out is otherwise known as pimping
2
19:43
@LauraΨ do they only stick to hairy people?
@MichaelMrozek Do I even want to know why this is being brought up in relation to the podcast?
@RebeccaChernoff They asked for plushy suggestions
I will go on record as being against Bitcoin.SE. I would be pro Pogs.SE though.
It might be this huge vladimir putin gallery i just opened up
@MichaelMrozek I see. I can't listen now. ):
19:45
@PiersMyers haha no. but rather than sewing them on to one item, you can move between various articles of clothing, bags, laptop sashes, etc.
@RebeccaChernoff Neither can the rest of us, the audio quality is terrible. And it's all @Katey's fault
This is my sentence !
@JeffAtwood NO
i'm glad we can see david playing ping pong in the background
for the record, I love plushies. plushies! ♥
19:45
@MichaelMrozek oy
Jin
Jin
Katey just take over
oh darn
ground control to Major Tom
is he opening candy?
Jin
Jin
he's back
Is this a prompt for more questions?
19:47
Sounds like you're cooking bacon, Joel
oh he actually is
lol om nom nom
what are you snacking on, @JoelSpolsky?
Jin
Jin
Linguistics is launching in 5mins..
Katey: "I think Joel got disconnected"
Jeff: "Oh. That's ok"
Let it be known that Jeff is not concerned if Joel goes missing
19:47
the SE talking bacon!? that's monstrous :p
what's with the pitchfork after people's names?
it means we are members of SE's CHAOS team
Man, I hate veggie options everywhere. it's always a ton of lettuce.
@JoelSpolsky that sounds delicious
@dustmachine magic.
19:47
67
Q: What is the meaning of CHAOS? Is it related to the PSI (Ψ) character?

Joel SpolskyI've seen a number of users with a PSI character in their names doing strange mysterious things on some Stack Exchange sites. What does it all mean?

Jin
Jin
where's that animated gif of me with My First Bacon?
Sorry everyone! I've ruined the whole podcast!
FIRED
@AbbyΨ Can she get fired during the podcast so we can watch? Call security
They'll never take me ALIVE!
because I am a vampire.
19:49
@KateyΨ :O
snickers or my dad's desktop
Just like a therapy session to end 15 minutes before the full hour
you can search for the app you want on an iPhone
That's a good point @JeffAtwood All my friends do the specific app folders
kinda bright in that room for a vampire
I forget what it's called
I've got a hood
19:51
@KateyΨ both clothing and the kind with neighbors
you're not sparkly enough to be out in the daytime, @Katey
Chrome :-)
This portion of the user-generated podcast isn't going so audibly
19:52
haters gonna hate, but i love notepad
Search FTW
also: the ribbon is amazing.
haters to the left
I love the Ribbon!
@AarthiDevanathanΨ You...are confused
I'm with @JeffAtwood! The ribbon is amazing
19:53
ribbon + thumbs = win :-)
Use Excel pre- and post-Ribbon and tell me that again
You also love notepad, so your opinion isn't exactly trustworthy
@MichaelMrozek notepad = best. I used it to code webpages. it was amazing.
no meta tags
and then I used it to code CSS for blogs.
It's not amazing, it's...nothing. It writes text directly to disk
19:54
@MichaelMrozek it's perfect.
It's featureless
actually, don't you want the brake to be large too?
Is the audio a bit choppy or is it getting to robotic levels?
perfection is relative :-)
that should be really easy to use in a pinch
19:54
@KateyΨ a little choppy, not horrible
@KateyΨ it's a little choppy here, but acceptable
@Jin there ya go:
Yes, the ribbon is optimized for the typical user. And if you're not the typical user, it sucks to be you
@Jin Wow
It's procaster, sorry guys. If it gets really bad I can try restarting
Wasn't it based on user feedback, some 80% of the requests were already in Office, only buried 4 levels deep
19:55
Did this chat just turn NSFW?
@JeffAtwood But that was WHY the Ribbon is designed the way it is; people requested Excel/Word/PPT features that were already in there
OH MAN @Jin that image is amazing.
@balpha thats is it.. i cant sleep tonight .. nightmares :-P
Definitely
Oh, no, that's bacon.
19:55
so they redesigned the menus into the ribbon
@BilltheLizard Strange. It usually takes a good half hour for that to happen
Joel: Controlling collapse order is actually fairly difficult
Jin
Jin
I DENY EVERYTHING!
Our developers struggle with that all the time
19:57
@JoelSpolsky - definite UX fail with the moving of buttons around
@ChrisF The start menu does that too; I can't use it anymore
It's actually more a limitation with the UI driver library
if I recall correctly, there's no way to directly control collapse order and behavior
@MichaelMrozek I always set the Start menu to "show all options".
search is only good if you know what you're looking for - maybe there should be a command line you can use...
Is that still possible in Windows 7? I haven't used it much, but I couldn't get it to stop dancing all over the place
19:59
you can just sort of give groups a priority and the library tries to figure out the rest for you; but I may not recall accurately or it could have changed
"picture" is a really obvious one though
ribbon + search = bi-winning?
most people can produce a single word that is mostly what they want to do
i launch apps on my mac exclusively via spotlight, just searching for the first few letters of the name of the app
"bacon"
19:59
Search is good even if you don't know what you're looking for.
@Abby I do the same on windows 7
love the feature
@AbbyΨ i do that on Vista/7 too
That's how I find control menu items nowadays, I just type things like "join a domain" into Start search
(Personally, I Lauchpad so that I search for everything)
i stopped trawling through start menus ages ago
20:00
I keep my most used in the mac doc but with everything else i search via spotlight
Here's the deal -- most people who know what they want are able to search for things by functionality.
Finding duplicates on SE is easier since the + modifier
keyboard navigation (i.e. Start->Run...) is near page 1 in "The Productive Programmer"
We have to believe that it is more common that someone knows how to search than not.
20:01
I continue to use win+r even though Microsoft tries to make that harder with each release
(Sorry, meant Launchy)
win + r is a good alternative.
incidentally, even the microsoft help stuff tells you to search for RUN in the start menu, which i think is lolarious
But it is entirely dependent on PATH.
Have you seen Executor? executor.dk
@cwallenpoole Now I don't know where anything is though, because Microsoft took the Mac approach of hiding the path of everything
20:02
On Win7 I just hit Win and start typing
This question is a duplicate of which other question?
[ ]
@Michael Sorry.
@cwallenpoole the port authority trans-hudson?
Wow, the sound is nearly gone. Is it me only?
@cwallenpoole I'll live; I don't use Windows enough to work up much rage
20:03
@Aarthi Absolutely! Where else?
@Mic
@hmemcpy Nope, breaking up for me too
i just lost it for about 15 seconds
@cwallenpoole PATH in all caps means the trains to me, haha.
and now it's dropping out again
and seems back
@AbbyΨ they kinda robot-y for you too?
20:03
tune in next time for Can Abby Hear The Podcast?
it's procaster plus @JoelSpolsky's wifi issues
@AarthiDevanathan Yea... I mean %PATH% in Windows
@katey you should just change your display name to "IT'S PROCASTER'S FAULT"
@cwallenpoole laughs i got that after a second.
WELL IT IS PROCASTER'S FAULT
20:05
txtspk is not a valid way to create a duplicate seed
i hope we all have clothes privileges :\
Somewhere George Stocker's head is exploding.
Did it start yet?
What's the "normal" maths site then?
is it mathoverflow vs math.se?
20:09
Fresh from the oven: sharepoint.stackexchange.com
> How do I walk through Central Park and not get shanked?
pick on Minnesota more
What a ridiculous example. Nobody lives in Iowa
@MichaelMrozek fewer still in Idaho
Minnesota has some great cities
20:10
What's an Iowa?
Don't think the video stream is getting optimal use since most of our time is spent looking at the chat stream. Chat-stream + video stream for better use
The Bielefeld Conspiracy is a running gag and meme among German Internet users, especially in the German Usenet. It is generally considered a satirical story rather than a hoax or an urban legend. Synopsis The story goes that the city of Bielefeld (population 330,000) in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia does not actually exist. Rather, its existence is merely propagated by an entity known only as SIE (in this context THEY or THEM, not the polite form of YOU), which has conspired with authorities to create the illusion of the city’s existence. The theory posits three questions: ...
@vternal3 I wish they'd get rid of the video and have a decent audio stream; I have so many problems with the video
nobody likes a soggy everything bagel :(
No offense to @Katey, but a continuous video feed of her watching the audio streams isn't particularly useful
20:11
@AbbyΨ i keep forgetting people like the everything bagels to begin with!
I am not really sure why we are doing the video stream
Give us some ping pong action shots
DANCE @Katey
LIKE NOBODY IS WATCHING
I like the infinity of seeing the window of the video stream on the screen on the video stream
EXCEPT PEOPLE TOTALLY ARE
20:12
@AarthiDevanathanΨ dead to me
Pen tricks. With both hands!
See dancing!
@AbbyΨ dude that's not showing up in my page!
And now I take back everything I've ever said about the video feed
@Michael Ya the video really doesn't have anything interesting on it IMO and if getting rid of the video made for greater audio quality (^.^)b!
20:12
New Share Point theme is out (and nice IMO)
http://sharepoint.stackexchange.com/
I am trying to think of other visual tricks I can do...
I'd like zoom controls so I can find out what the people in the background are doing.
make video window full screen
Card tricks. Or puppetry. With socks.
other than @katey, you've got emmett, matt, and demis in the shot
(left to right)
20:14
and all three are/should be working, haha
I made a finder mustache
Yay!
Also, everyone should watch Parks and Recreation
3
that's Indiana though, right? not Iowa
Parks and Recreations is pretty good :)
@Brant ahhhhhh!
20:15
Yes, Pawnee, Indiana.
in case you missed it:
If you can get Amy Poehler on the podcast, that would be okay.
Guys, we're running out of food rakes in the num nums room
that
20:16
Did I stumble into the CHAOS room by mistake?
is what i call kitchens
Sorry everyone
Sounds like this room needs more BACON
20:16
i had the misfortune of joining during the ashton kutcher panel
Thanks for the Pod cast :) cheers! Joel rock on dude!
looking forward to your announcement
poor Punyon
thanks for all the questions.. thanks @Katey for working the steam engines
yaaaay @Katey
20:19
Thanks for being nice to me you guys!
Clearly I need to work on my hurtful comments; they're not working at all
