i found a kanji homonym!
伺う<うかがう> is the identical writing and pronunciation for the two verbs "ask" and "visit"
oh well maybe the accent is different
01:04
@taylor 同じだと思います・・・
well, see the tag wiki once i'm done where i present my case
01:32
How about 弁[べん]?
弁1・・・話すこと、方言
弁2・・・a petal, a valve
「あの人は弁(べん↓)が立つ」「弁(べん↓)が閉じる」
shit i think you found one
Ah, 便too...
theyre not in true homophony unless they have same accent location though
im trying to look that up now
便1・・・convenience 便2・・・feces
hmm but these are listed as one word in my dictionary
that doesnt matter
01:37
These 弁's are listed separately
actually still doesn't matter, whether a dictionary lists them under one lexical entry or two, that fact in itself is irrelevant
in homonymy, it must be the case that there are two distinct entries in the mental lexicon, that for some reason or another, have the same pronunciation and written form.
dictionaries don't have to respect this difference
I see... Now I'm only seeing my J-E dictionary. Maybe my J-J dictionary lists them differently
When you say ~~弁(~~dialect), the intonation is different from 弁 as "talking" "petal" "valve" (falling tone)
The tone of 弁 as "dialect" is like... 第一声 of the 4 tones in Chinese language
when 弁 participates in compounding its accent changes
it might adopt an accent it never had or lose an accent that it did have
i think 弁 underlying must be accentless
Ah~ I see
Yeah~~ that's why when you say 花弁, the 弁 loses its falling tone!

Q: Books on Resources for learning Japanese

TimPerhaps books should be split into "Readers"(?) and "Reference books". Current entry only contains reference books. I am always on the look out for good readers, ideally with parallel text, to develop my "読解力” and can suggest some. Perhaps "Audio books & other Readers"?

On one hand, I'd benefit from such a list
On the other hand, I'm not sure how to pull it off. What qualifies for the list?
Would it just turn into fluent speakers' favorite books?
And "shopping recommendations" are pretty discouraged across the SE network.
readers? u mean just books?
I think so, but it's not my question.
My interpretation is a list of reading materials designed for various levels. Like how there is a set of books recommended for each grade level (at least in the US) that get progressively more complex.
03:19
I'm always amazed that suggested edits are reviewed within minutes of submission. It implies high-rep people visit the site far more than the front page activity would suggest.
04:01
Recall that we do have ~500 visits/day... alot of the higher rep people are logged in all the time
I always thought the 500 visits was inflated
They actually try pretty hard to keep that down

A: Books on Resources for learning Japanese

jkerianIf it's just one or two you want to add, just add them to the list as is. If there are enough that it's going to double the size of the section, just add a Readers Section for the moment... probably using the ## notation " Books ... current contents Readers ... the readers you want to add "...

I've been sortof maintaining the FAQs... so I might as well offer my opinion :)
The overlap between the somewhat technically competent and the somewhat japanese-knowledgeable is rather large. I kinda wonder if the huge variety of online "learn Japanese" material is a direct result of intermediate Japanese students getting tired of actually working on the language... and deciding that they'd really prefer to teach it. (or at least that they prefer the technical challenges of web coding to the challenges of natural languages)
04:45
@Chocolate aren't you supposed to be out drinking in a pub somewhere?
04:59
I know they try to keep it down, but if I log in >15 minutes apart, it counts twice, and I check several times a day (not really sure why, since I can't answer most of the questions)
Plus, we don't know how many of those visits are from unregistered users. The number of 200+ rep users on JLU is probably less than 100 (if you exclude people that haven't returned in months).

@jkerian Hi. I had not seen this chat on my question. Thanks for the answer; I have added the title and one book for you check (although I not sure how to work the font colour function yet). The thoughts you had were in line with my own - essentially parallel texts or books meant for adults learning Japanese.
@jkerian (and Troyen). Among others books I might add are Rapid Reading Japanese. Improving reading skills of intermediate and advanced students, which you might say is a text book and 中上級の日本語, which you might argue is a monthly magazine but for reading resources, I think this is the right place (?)

@Tim the color is mostly from making it a link (you can copy the format in the whatever-the-section-on-top-is-called)
or in short [Text that shows on the post][#] followed at the end of the post by a line like:
[#]:http://www.example.com
where # would be 16 in this case, I believe
Alternatively, you can just use the "insert link" button

I was trying to think of how to describe the confusion about whether to put given name first, or surname first, and whether romanized Japanese names are given name first, or family name first. Then I realized how to sum up the situation.

@AndrewGrimm i quite enjoyed that. shouldn't worry the name confusion in Japanese context too much unless it is an everyday practicality like an air ticket or will the one bank recognize the name of my bank account and make the transfer?...that can be a time consuming head ache.

@AndrewGrimm I can pretty much quote that scene entirely, but what does it have to do with names? both cups are poisoned? ^-^
You can go back and forth on it endlessly? I don't know either..
Home I go..

oh my wiki tag for homonym was rejected
i guess it was a little awkward
awkward? If anything it sounds too specific, probably wouldn't be used much at all.
yeah your right
i was trying to give an example
and then explain why it is a homonym
to illustrate the general way in which homonyms are identified
but it was a bit bloated wasnt it lolz
still, the tag should at least be filled to avoid confusion on the term
..I'm not sure what exactly you're talking about :)
the wiki tag i wrote for the tag "homonym"
That much I got :p
20:32
i thought it would be useful to walk through an example of how a homonym is identified
as opposed to a homophone or homograph
I see
particularly so because kanji homonyms are extremely rare
i was excited to find one lolz
