Most of the images that google search returns on "translation icon" have "Ａ" and "文". I guess it's the standard practice? As a Japanese I'm a bit bothered by the non-parallelism in denotation. "A" is the first letter of the latin alphabet and "文" is a kanji meaning letter, text, sentence.

Is it supposed to cover both Chinese and Japanese? Was using "あ" avoided because it would mean script change rather than translation? I wouldnt have been able to figure out what the icon meant in isolation at a glance, but in context it might have been more clear. Plus expecting a simple graphical symbol to be precise that much might be unreasonable.

Yes. It's more about vocabulary than grammar though. And it keeps showing the same words even though I mark them as "known".
