Q: Difference between 間【あいだ】 and 間【ま】

user763305What is the difference between the words 間【あいだ】 and 間【ま】 ? Both seem to have the basic meaning space or time interval.

Anonymous
I'm torn on this question. It would be better if it asked about all the readings of 間 in my opinion, but it's too late to edit it because that would invalidate the existing answers (at a minimum Thomas Gross')

3:19 AM
Does it really have that many others? Only additional one I can think of is the けん in 世間...

Anonymous
@Kaji Well, it has twice as many. かん and けん are left out of the comparison.

ach, silly me, there's also かん as in 時間
人間
Ok, guess there are a few more than I thought
The distinction though is that the question's asking about when to use its kun readings; the additional ones have all been on

Anonymous
かん is in a lot more words than けん, as is often the case for those types of 音読み but けん is in important words (yes, 人間 and 世間)

Anonymous
@Kaji Right, but you have to make choices that involve other than kun readings, like その間: is it そのあいだ or そのかん?

I was going to elaborate and say that in compounds, ま is common as is かん

Anonymous
5:42 AM
Someone could ask a separate question about その間, maybe

Anonymous
あいだ doesn't appear in many compounds, though . . . I know it's part of こないだ (from このあいだ), and it's in 間柄

Q: Other meaning of 訪れる

robertoGood Day! I currently need some help. I am translating some Japanese Documents to English. I came across this text: 66歳に到達した日以降に最初に訪れる3月末まで So far I have: Until the end of March...on or after the day of turning 66 years old How should one translate this text: 最初に訪れる, in order for it to fit the...

Anonymous
"Starting from the day [someone] turns 66, until the end of March arrives"?

ぼえにっく? ドイツ系かな・・
@snailboat だよね~
ああ、
66歳になってから初めての3月31日
まで。
by march 31 か、until march 31 か、
分からないよね。
By/until the first March 31 after you turn 66
(意味通じます?)

Anonymous
@Chocolate I think you can phrase it that way

Anonymous
So 最初に modifies 訪れる and it means the first time that 3月末 arrives

(the first time [after the day they turn 66])

A: Other meaning of 訪れる

snailboatI think it's the second sense for 訪れる in Wiktionary: 季節・状況などがやってくる。 Other dictionaries give similar definitions. Here's the relevant sense from 広辞苑: (ある時期・状況などが)やってくる。「春が訪れる」「世界に平和が訪れる日」 So 最初に訪れる3月末 would mean something like "the first March 31 that arrives", although arrive is a bi...

Hehe, I yoinked your translation :-)

12:05 PM
I think I broke the translation party
With "This is silly"
Which is very appropriate ;)

Anonymous
Oh, it should detect longer loops!

Anonymous
That was silly of them :-)

It does, actually
I didn't really break it.
Anyway, how are you?

Anonymous
I don't think it detects longer loops. I think it just gives up after N iterations.

True, it does give up.

Anonymous
12:07 PM
That could be construed as a poor man's loop detection... :-)

Anonymous
But it's not what I intended to say

Anonymous
@Szymon I am doing well! I'm enjoying going through Martin's reference grammar :-)

@snailboat Very good use of time, I should say.

Anonymous
At some point I might try to write an answer to one of those こそあど questions to try to give Martin's perspective
