to-contraction is really interesting

I like "therapy verbs" (wanna, hafta, oughta, sposta, etc.)

thanks, @snailboat, because I needed another paper to read :P
at least this one's in english

Anonymous
Reading linguistics papers in Japanese is educational! ;-)

yeah, but I have to read so many of them =(

Anonymous
Or, well, stuff in Japanese.

2:03 PM
it definitely is good practice though, given that I'm going to be writing my thesis in a year ><
I still need to decide my research topic though

I often like to talk about "acceptability" instead of "grammaticality". I can say whether a sentence is acceptable to me without talking about it in terms of grammar

@snailboat that's a good idea. maybe I'll do that from now on.

Anonymous
That's one distinction Chomsky made that I like :-)

haha
ok, I gotta run. it's past my bedtime :<

Anonymous
Rest well!

2:06 PM
thanks. おやすみ~

Anonymous
Hehe, it took me a little bit to realize what that was writing :-)

oh

I was like... しん・・・ぐう?
didn't think about kunyomi until you said that, @snailboat lol
=/
ok but for realz bye yo

Anonymous
2:10 PM
I also know people who say things like "for realz" in person

Anonymous
And even "for serious"

I've heard "for the lolz" from relatives who are in high school

Anonymous
2:27 PM
Oh, I don't actually talk to anyone who says that phrase online, although I know of that phrase.

ssb
最高のおかずで
【形】
fuckalicious〈卑〉
thanks alc

Yeee

2:57 PM
えええ
注)アダカテです
アダルトカテゴリー 知恵袋にはあるけど
yahoo answers には「アダルト・セクション」は無い?
18禁とか
ちなみにこの写真は「ぶりの照り焼き」だと思われます
ブリ、鰤

Anonymous
Um

Anonymous
Oh, 鰤 is ブリ

Anonymous
I need to learn more fish kanji! :-)

やほお知恵袋のアダルトカテゴリーって、行くと気持ち悪いですよ
ヘンタイがいっぱいいて

Anonymous
I have never looked for such a section

3:08 PM
そおね、
行かない方がいい
「最高のおかず」でググると、半分以上がエロいページですねえ
意外です
もっと「ご飯のおかず」があると思ったのに

Anonymous
I didn't know おかず had that meaning until I looked it up a few minutes ago...

3:46 PM
忘れましょう・・・

I'm going to tutor a Japanese girl math later this year/next year

おお!
がんばって

probably means I'll ask lots of math related questions here

ssb
here's how you do it

I should buy a math textbook
and learn how questions are asked in Japanese

ssb
3:51 PM
get a room, and when she comes for tutoring make her say Flaw先生に用があってきました。入ってもいいですか? and then you say はい and then you quiz her on her 九九

日本語で教えるの??
日本語の教科書??

yup

おおお

although I'll probably end up using English haha

ssb
everything has a Japanese word

3:54 PM
but it would help me understand if she asks me questions in Japanese

ssb
so it's not just a matter of learning the right katakana english

中学生くらいの数学ならわかる
けど高校の数学は無理、基礎解析、代数幾何・・・
確率統計、全然分からないです
小学生は「つるかめ算」を教えないといけないんだよ
x,y を使ってはいけない!大人には逆に難しい

IGCSEの試験は中学くらいでしょう

GCSE?
イギリスのGCSEの問題は、日本の数学よりかなり優しいと思います
易しい*

いいえ、IGCSEです

4:00 PM
お?
どのくらい難しいか知らないです・・

what are topics within a subject called?
not in terms of what topic and subject means in language
I mean...
like 三角法 is a topic in 数学

単元?
かな・・

ssb
what are they even called in english
i just realized i don't know
topics?

I would use the word topics

ssb
branch!
branch of mathematics
branch of mathematics concerned with
~に関する数学の一分野
一分野

4:07 PM
あ、そうだ
ふんの
じゃなくて
ぶんや

ssb
数学の分野 seems like the safest way, yeah

so can I ask 試験に何の分野が出るか

ssb
maybe even just どんな質問

somehow I feel 単元 fits better here

ssb
isn't a tangen a unit in school though?

4:14 PM
because 試験 kind of creates the environment for 単元 to be there

ssb
like you have your unit 1 test
単元テスト

suddenly I have lots of questions haha
I've not used Japanese in a real setting before
do I use plain or polite form to instruct a student?

ssb
just start polite and go with the flow

what if parents are there, who's going to be lastnameさん ?

ssb
you can call the girl lastname san
and then say okaasan otousan maybe?

4:24 PM
I wonder if I'll end up learning more Japanese from her than she learns math from me
would you need Xさんのおかあさん ? Or is おかあさん fine on its own?

Wow. Tons of chat.

4:45 PM
お父さん、お母さんでいいよね
親墨!

7 hours later…
ssb
11:40 PM
親炭
