Q: Why can't we keep the hats after Winter Bash?

PandaIt would be great if the hats could be kept and worn after Winter Bash. Why can't hats be kept for the year until the next Winter Bash? Furthermore, the hats fits all seasons, not just suitable for winter, though it's serves a greater purpose during winter since it's cold ;)

I have post a answer at sharp 6 o'clock(+1/2 sec. difference) hope I got hat for that.
@HatsStackExchange Because Stack was founded by someone called Jeff, not by Lewis
12:43
because of that, having hats enabled all year long would suddenly make you all less profitable at work, worst parents for your children, bad apples in the community and generally not trustworthy.
@Derpy Technically, I meant keep the earned hats after Winter Bash
nonono, avoid fun and happiness at all cost, that is not professional. Not proactive. Not "corporate" enough.
Not continue Winter Bash all year long
@Panda then, technically, the site with the list is still accessible all year long - they usually remove it only about a month before next Bash starts. And even then... they probably don't remove the data from the servers.
@Derpy Yea, true, just that we can't wear it
12:47
@Panda if you wanted to actually wear them, just not being able to earn new ones, the reply above is still fitting.
someone could write a userscript if the data is still available that renders the hat into your avatar maybe
@Derpy Wait, we can wear the hats after Winter Bash?
@EmilyM I tried that last year, I got to the point I could re-enable the hat on my own avatar.
then I dropped it because it was too over-complicated.
Lol, that's cool
If you have to use an userscript, then it is probably better to build up an hat system from scraps
13:01
Stack Exchange seems to be very quiet around
It's so difficult getting a Good Question badge ;)
@Derpy Wow, thanks! But I'm not familiar with it :|
oh, wait, this may give you a better view of that site...
My highest voted was 6, and it's on Meta SE ;) meta.stackexchange.com/questions/288432/…
42 awarded mortarboard. EVER
no epic, no legendary
13:08
Wow
And it's not a beta site
@Derpy only 48 on our site, and we have tons of traffic. People just don't vote very much it seems
Yea, people just don't vote now
@veryRandomMe your older question is from 2013. Our from 2009. We have 4.5k question pages, your site has 1.6k. User base is also larger , yet we manage to have lower votes counts :P
anyway, not a competition.
just very sad knowing you won't never see the 20k tools.
13:24
yes, the site is only 3-4 years old
@Derpy yeah . . .
I just (10 minutes or so) got the Taco hat on German Language, if anybody wants to investigate.
I should drop SharePoint, start writing books.
Running Ragged is seriously difficult to get
Initially I thought it was 150 rep combined
6
Q: Is 'Running Ragged' being awarded?

PandaThe description states: earn 150 reputation points on three different sites (not including Stack Overflow) within 15 days. I've 3 questions: Does this mean that if I earn 150 reputation combined on 3 sites, eg. 100 rep on Meta Stack Exchange and 50 rep on Ask Different, I would get this...

@Wrzlprmft Did you edit any posts recently?
@Panda ask a question about how to cut a battery (old ones, with free mercury) to use it as a lighter on Lifehacks, something about Pokemon Go or Minecraft on Arqade and you are already half way done.
13:30
@Derpy Lol, I should consider that if I don't get votes on MSE ;)
Yes, see my profile. I am in the process of compiling an summary.
the one about the battery may get closed as a dupe , but it is worth trying
@Derpy Yea, lol thanks :)
@Wrzlprmft Yea, it got to do with editing :P
sadly, all the cool ones are already taken, so if you was thinking about a question asking how to use cyanide gas to remove mold.... bad luck, was already done.
> Potassium Cyanide: This is the kill-all of cleaning products! Containing a triple Carbon-Nitrogen bond it breaks open any mould DNA down to the molecular level and leaves behind the most sterile and clean area you've ever witnessed. Just add it to water (even a 2% solution will work great!) and again use a sponge (synthetic or natural: now it doesn't matter) and the same physical treatment as the above solutions. This is the most permanent solution of all!
@Derpy Yea, it's difficult to think of new ideas
Lol, clicked
@Derpy I thought the kill all cleaning product was piranha solution lol
TACO = Tag-O = Tag-only
@EmilyM Gimme the votez/clickz requests may earn you a suspension.
We've been asked not to do that kind of thing.
@DavidPostill andrew was fine with it last night? has something changed? we were asked not to do "gimme upvotes" have they added "dont ask other people to look at the contents of a hyperlink"?
13:49
@EmilyM It's not normal behaviour.

A: Discouraging "soul-selling" for hats

bluefeetWinter Bash and hats are the fun way that we like to end the year. We very carefully try to come up with triggers based on normal user actions on the sites, like asking questions, answering, commenting, and many others. Gaming for the hats is always a problem, which is why we try to make sure ...

14:01
@DavidPostill that post says nothing about asking people to view a link being against the rules.
I ask people to look at my links all the time
kind of the purpose of a link
posting a link here for people to look at is no different than facebook
why is the social media of chat different than any other social environment
hey fellas
I just came to confirm a theory about Mild Mannered
unless I shouldn't spoil...
I thought we've already figured out?
Post an answer which is accepted and received no votes for 12h?
the google doc has a question mark next to it
yes, that's it
Not sure why there's a question mark lol
@DavidPostill how asking people to click the link on the chat is different from asking them to click the link on twitter? Just because here you talk directly with the ones clicking. It feels lame, but to suspend someone for that would feel even lamer. Especially when we often don't take actions against worst offenders....
14:10
Wait a second, so one can link on chat instead of linking on any other social media to get that hat?
If so I can see lots of constructive ways to do that.
You can technically send the question to your friends too
Just use WhatsApp or sort
It's totally fine, it says share
@Derpy It was a friendly warning - that's why I said "may earn you a suspension". You can all choose to carry on as normal ...
14:36
@DavidPostill Was not my point. My point is that asking for votes creates noise, asking for 5 views creates almost none. It still is lame, but I think that we have worst problems that could use some work than losing time suspending someone because he/she shared a link on the chat.
<shrug>
Blue in the Face and 8,243,721 seem like they are backwards in the GDoc...
I got 8,243,721 for removing comments, and Blue in the Face for adding comments (a convo)... the GDoc has that reversed.
Not sure... I think I got it for adding, and 6 for removing
Never mind.
14:59
This is a test message
@AndrewLi It worked

Q: Winter Bash 011 hat

JoacerToday I got my 11th hat but I have not received the hat 011, whose requirement is to get 11 hats, I found it a bit strange since it has been a few hours since I got the 11th and I have not been given. Are there any extra requirements for this hat? Or is it a bug? Or all the hats have to get them...

15:36
test link do not click lol
@EmilyM Stop posting your links plz
Its been an hour and a half since I posted that link

Q: Can we make the 011 hat clearer?

PythonMasterThe description for the hat, "011" is not that clear: Collect 11 hats Even I was confused with this. I realized that when it says collect 11 hats, it means collect 11 hats on a single site. For example, you must earn 11 hats in Stack Overflow. Its current description really says that all yo...

Q: Can we translate the description of Epiphany back to English?

PythonMasterThe hat, "Epiphany", currently has a description in a language other than English (not Italian): La Befana vien di notte con le scarpe tutte rotte I can't read that and a lot of other users will not be able to read that. Sure, we could read the short summary which says, "post or vote on Jan...

So we can see the first time you posted it. Don't post it again.
you think people scroll up and read things from an hour and a half ago
I posted one different link recently, and one same link now and also an hour and a half ago
are you telling me im not allowed to post links? are you a mod or something?
15:42
14 hours ago, by Eric Wofsey
I just got Blue in the Face shortly after receiving an upvote on a comment. It seems that the trigger was "10 upvoted comments posted during winter bash".
is this correct?
Anonymous
Please don't be annoying or disruptive. That's just common courtesy.
@EasterlyIrk the google doc says it is something very similar to that
no, it says something pretty different
@Mego im just asking the person who they are to tell me what to do and what the problem is. if hed asked me nicely I wouldnt have a problem with it Hes trying to order me around and I don't like that.
15:45
it says something like "a series of 8 comments by 2 people on a question, asker and somebody else, the somebody else gets the hat"
Im refering to :
"In a “synthetic test” this seems to work:
On a question posed during Winter Bash, where
There are 10 comments with up votes, and
The comment stream involves the OP and at least two others, and
The others are tagged, and
The question gets revised, then
The OP gets the hat.
"
i was just commenting on the "10 comments" part
yeah, that's not it though
(I get why you said that)
I obviously have it
I can tell you it has something to do with making a bunch of comments
cause thats what i was doing when i got it
I made a bunch of comments and flags on ~15 different questions.
15:47
it needs just 10 upvoted comments
not all at once, just during winterbash
or <some high number 5-10>
Anonymous
@EmilyM He did ask you nicely. Don't try to shift the blame.
@Mego I looked back. I didn't see the "plz" at the end. My bad. For the record though, if I hypothetically don't want to do something someone else wants in chat that doesn't mean I am being rude or breaking any rules.
@EmilyM You were already warned against doing it, though.
Anonymous
"Don't be annoying" is the golden rule of chat. You were being annoying. End of story.
3
15:53
@mbomb007 no some random person who is not a mod also said they thought it was against the rules and they were told by multiple other people they were wrong. Two people saying they think the rule means X does not a rule make.
@EmilyM I've seen people chat banned for it.
1 min ago, by Mego
"Don't be annoying" is the golden rule of chat. You were being annoying. End of story.
you cant just ask someone to do something that isnt a rule and say they are breaking the rules because not doing what you want is against the rules cause its rude
can we just forget it >_< it's clogging the chat more to argue about it then the actual event and I'm trying to search for secrit hats here guys
You were breaking the golden rule.
Anonymous
I can see now that further discussions with you will not be fruitful. Goodbye.
15:54
@EricWofsey was it just 1 vote on the last comment? Or did they all have like 3 votes?
guys, do you think there is life after Winter Bash?
oops
epiphany is the epiphany that life cannot continue without hats
@alecxe we'll, you just have to photoshop your hat onto your avatar. then you're ok

15:56
You are annoying me, the both of you. You are both breaking the "golden rule". What kind of subjective nonsesnse is that. I don't want to talk about this anymore. EasterlyIrk is right, its clogging chat. Don't try to force your beliefs about what is appropriate on other people unless you are writing the rules for the room. I wont break the rules and if asked nicely i will try to comply with what other people want, but no guarantees. Ill stop posting the link since you guys asked.
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ why? I think it fits my avatar perfectly :)
no, that's just it
@mbomb007 I don't think asking for voting on comments/making comments to test with permission from the OP is soul-selling
it's not confirmed, I'm not farming hats
I already have this hat anyway, I'm just trying to see how to get it on a different site
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ It's non-normal behavior, and it's spam comments.
I'm flagging them.
fine, I'll nuke them
looks like dennis did
where is andrew li at, hes the one who made the room. I have already had this exact discussion with him and he said he doesnt like it personally but it isn't against any rules. @EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ don't worry about these two, they are just on some silly crusade about "selling your soul for hats".
what the hell is this room for then anyway if we cant link to questions
we already have the google doc for writing criterea
16:00
@EmilyM one of them is a mod and he forcibly nuked my comments
so
I'm inclined to think they're right :P
@EmilyM Spamming comments is flaggable.
Posting a link to THIS SITE is spamming now?
That's not what he was doing
He posted 10 nearly identical comments to the same question.
Oh then we are talking about two different things
@EmilyM Calm down.
16:02
I thought you guys were mad caused he posted the link itself
to the question
Can't we all just get along.... for the sake of hats!
^
Or we should rename the room to Ye Old Rules Shoppe /s

can we just forget it >_< it's clogging the chat more to argue about it then the actual event and I'm trying to search for secrit hats here guys
@KritixiLithos AHA! THAT DID WORK
the bluefeet trigger is 10 upvoted comments, posted during winterbash
The main reason I was posting my link is because I am sure I have gotten 5 clicks on that link but I still can't get Amped Up.
16:03
yeah, that happens to lots of people >_>
I got one comment with over 10 upvotes though...
@TheSharpieOne nope. That isn't something humans are capable of.
@KritixiLithos no, 10 distinct ones
:P
@KritixiLithos maybe the criteria is 10 comment upvotes and not 10 upvoted comments
@Derpy Humans?
16:05
@KritixiLithos did you get the hat from that?
Im not on my best behavior cause I'm disguised as a moderator /s
People were spamming and getting upvotes to get that... but it seemed like the OP got the hat
@KritixiLithos then yeah, that confirms it's 10 distinct comments upvoted at least once each
@TheSharpieOne where?
sweet
ill add to the google doc
16:06
I did participate a little... but didn't get the hat until I was the OP
it doens't matter who's the OP idt, it just matters whoever got 10 upvotes
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ I'm going to try this strategy in a few days: chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/34238903#34238903
@KritixiLithos yeah, me too
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ This is the post that bluefeet was referring to in chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/34270752#34270752
@TheSharpieOne yeah, my thinking is that if you didn't get enough upvoted comments during previous tests then the later one will trigger that
16:07
all the spam comments have been removed, but everyone was upvoting everyone and it seemed like only the OP got the hat
and it's hard to test if you aren't going for 10 comments though
Bye, hats = angry mods, so I'm leaving :P
see ya! thanks for the test help though
I can (almost) confirm that Blue in the Face requires 10 distinct upvoted comments during the Winterbash period. Number of upvotes doesn't matter.
The comments can be deleted.
@orthocresol why almost?
16:10
Testing it out with one more user.
Will report back in ~10 minutes ;)
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Hmm, how come you have the hat on SFF? Are there upvoted deleted comments?
@orthocresol Do they have to be on the same post?
16:13
@orthocresol no, just normal ones
No. Of the two users who got the hat on Chemistry (myself included), they are spread out.
@orthocresol if you mean are there comments that are upvoted that have since been deleted, oh yeah
Would a question asked at 2016-12-23 16:00:05Z qualify for the time theory part of the mad hatter?
Yeah
16:14
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Ah, I see. That makes sense, then.
@TheSharpieOne I don't think that's it though, conor didn't have any activity on the hour
@orthocresol me and Mithrandir tested, I got it from a really long sequence of comments that had upvoted
I just did it again on PPCG, 10 upvoted comments and it worked
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ It's been shown that on the 15-minute mark works, too
@orthocresol Do you think the comment upvotes have to be from different users?
@mbomb007 hm, okay
maybe cause of those timezones that are offset by 30/45?
@Loong Hmm, that's possible. I guess we will see soon enough.
16:15
@Loong no, confirmed they don't
@orthocresol nope, doesn't matter
kritixi upvoted all of mine, I got it
@mbomb007 I see the other criteria, I'm sure that will happen naturally (thus me not posting a link and asking for UV), but I want to make sure the timing is legit (or at least believed to be)
Do we know if the UV needs to be within a certain time as well?
Probably just during the winterbash
and the answer too I think
@orthocresol I have enough comments: chemistry.stackexchange.com/users/7951/loong?tab=activity Start slowly upvoting step by step. ;-)
16:17
That part is not on the GDoc :(
@Loong One every 10 minutes? :D
also this is very important: is the silver badge hat a spork?
@Loong asking for upvotes....
@orthocresol With documentation and quality assurance. This is science.
@TheSharpieOne Don't worry, we will suspend each other when we are done.
16:18
@orthocresol who watches the watchmen?
@TheSharpieOne Jon Skeet
who watches jon skeet? jon skeet
John Cena
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Looks to be... probably a play on silver spoon
Just a quick poll, do people understand what my avatar is referencing?
16:20
oh, true
@mbomb007 the last crusade
If nobody gets it, I'd change my avatar.
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ K, good.
everybody should watch all 3 films
we do not mention the 4th one here
I've seen The Last Crusade lots, I watched Temple of Doom recently, and I don't remember the other one at all.
Is it the one with the Ark of the Covenant?
or is that in Last Crusade?
no, the ark is raiders of the lost ark
Ah, right. Okay I remember them all.
it's the crystal skull one thats annoying, even with shia labeouf
Stupid aliens, messing up the series.
They're making a 5th one... I think
16:24
@orthocresol My last 9 comments have at least one upvote. My last comment before that has no upvote. And I have got no hat. Thus, your hypothesis could be correct.
are they all during interbash?
when do I get this hat: `trendsetter
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ yes
@Vikrant hey thats a new hat
^
Cue playing of Zelda "secret found" music.
16:26
@Loong I checked the other users on the top of the monthly reputation list (you included), and so far they support my hypothesis.
but for what
nobody knows yet
@Vikrant Nobody knows
@Loong are they all during winterbash
16:27
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Yes, Dec 19 onwards.
Of course, it is not quite "my" hypothesis, because someone suggested it before on the doc.
1 min ago, by Loong
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ yes
oh, didn't see that >_>
@orthocresol o/ hello
hat now @Loong?
waiting
OK. The only constraint that I have found is that, comments suggesting duplicates do not count.
oh, really?
could it just be hat lag?
16:29
It could be, but I waited 15 minutes.
@mbomb007 I got that hat...
can someone link me the hat leaderboard for SO
@Vikrant yeah, checking your activity basically shows you didn't do anything since earlier today

Q: Winter Bash 2016 - All Hats

DavidI decided to start the traditional secret hats post, but instead of just another "here is how you get the secret hats" post, to also add in all the hats. There are two answers: one for the secret hats, and one for the regular hats. Some notes about secret hats: A secret hat for correctly gue...

did you just get this hat?
16:30
dont know
but checked account after two hours
Did you edit Documentation at all today?
Or propose a new tag?
I did edited a doc today, and I got what's up doc for that
no new tag proposed
I have flagged 15 comments today, to delete them
and 50 posts
and all flags got approved :D
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Hat! It worked.
It's already been stated that no hats require flagging.
@Loong :D congrats!
16:39
@Loong Which one?
@mbomb007 Blue in the Face confirmed
@Loong 10 upvoted comments?
yes
Edit the google doc
And the "All Hats" answer, I suppose.
some kind ofTrend I have set here...! ( ≖.≖)
16:42
9 upvoted comments did nothing. 10 upvoted comments resulted in the hat.
@Loong, great ≧◠‿◠≦✌
Do you think there are any non-date-related hats that haven't yet been earned?
16:57
@mbomb007 I think, those are not released yet
I mean, do you think there are any secret hats that are unearned
Currently, there are 12 secret hats revealed and I think more will come out eventually...
Listen Buddies, This is Stackoverflow 2016 hats audio :D, you can star the comment to keep it...
Also testing They Live here.
17:13
@KazWolfe, it's clear that, you have to edit atleast 5 posts older than a year
@Vikrant For "They Live"? Because I thought that was a a different hat.
what else?
because I've done that and don't have it
elementary/taco
Taco or Elementary.
i got both from editing 5 3 year+ posts
17:14
Yes, I meant for They Live only.
I hv edited 2014 posts and got that
.... may be
I did older posts than that, no dice
They Live probably has to do with editing (or taking action on) an old post (with no activity for a while) which then has some activity.
That was my guess
17:21
Why you people discussing, which is already clear
What do you mean?
They Live, Blue on the Face, are known ,.. how to earn
blue in the face is known
They Live is not known.
we don't know the specifics of they live
17:25
Hi guys
Just got off a plane
we solved blue face
Editing 5 old questions doesn't auto-grant it, and it seems to have the most success after review queues.
What is it?
and is it tested thoroughly?
17:26
BITF: Make 10 comments with at least 1 upvote each during Winter Bash (ignoring deletion).
Sounds right
Blue in the face? Not 8243721?
Comments suggesting possible duplicates do not count.
Yes, blue in the face.
I suspect that comments describing custom close reasons also do not count, but I can't test it.
the 8.2and so on is for deleting comments, again likely 10 and at least one (maybe more) upvoted.
Guys can you help me get a silver medal for the 925 hat? Just need 91 views on this question: stackoverflow.com/questions/17225988/…
@Frakcool No. Please stop that.
yesterday, by bluefeet
Ok, folks this goes to everyone. The nonsense that just transpired on this post needs to end immediately. I know you want hats but if you continues to be disruptive, you'll be suspended until after winter bash ends.
17:33
@DavidPostill Fine, sorry
Does Mad Hatter still give if the question was closed?
?
mad hatter is unknown
There is a working theory for the hatter
Post on the hour or :15 after (because it's 6:00 somewhere in the world) on wednesday or friday
17:41
Post on the hour
And you have at least a whole minute to post.
then i'll keep waiting a bit, as this didn't throw a hat yet.
So prewrite it then copy+paste
(unless it needs to be written within the minute, which seems unlikely to me)
(Do check the tags, mine did not want to take as I made a mistake in writing the tag.)
I had mine written in the last 10 minutes before the new hour, posted (failed, corrected and posted again) on the hour.
@AndrewLi +/- 5 minutes, and that works
conor commented at 01:18 UTC
17:53
@KazWolfe Don't use the clock in the reputation tab to determine when to post. I did that, then found that the clock was a minute behind.
I ended up posting 9 seconds too late.
@mbomb007 (i still posted in the minute, used UTC on PC)
Yeah, I thought I should use SE's UTC clock. Guess not.
If as @EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ indicated it is +/- 5 minutes, that does not matter.
I mean, if that theory is correct it is
but if that is then it also has some serious lag
