At one point many years ago I wanted to open a bubble tea shop with wifi with a non-Jewish friend of mine. I wonder how our lives would have been had we gone down that path.
Several hundred thousand in the hole, I imagine, and much less spare time, but who knows!
@IsaacMoses heh -- I was about to share that with you when I saw your link. I was talking with rolfl (the author) about that last night. It grew out my wondering if someone I just saw hit 10k before the initial 90-day window of a new beta had set any sort of record. :-)
(TimB, Worldbuilding, 82 days. Counting from launch of the private beta.)
Theoretically speaking, if tyrannosaurs were still present these days, or in some way or another brought back, would they be kosher?
Let's assume that they are properly slaughtered and prepared.
@Shokhet I like very much how you and NBZ made this into a tutorial on the chapter headings of the gamut of kosher animal identification. Great intro for the uninitiated.
This answer was started by Pink's comment on the question.
Kepler/NASA have discovered what they call "circumbinary" planets -- planets that orbit multiple suns (or "stars" or whatever you want to call them).
The way it works is that there is a planet that orbits two suns, both of which orbi...
@Tim Now you'll just have to teach me how to use Inkscape ;-)
Because you don't answer the question at all. You answer this question: "What are the requirements of a fish to be kosher." (And btw your answer is wrong: Only scales are required.) I asked for a definition. — NBZ8 mins ago
@Shokhet I still don't know what was unclear. I completely agree it is better now post edits, but I don't know how you thought that answered the question?
@DoubleAA The question "what is a fish in the context of kashrus" sounds like "what is a kosher fish," until you tell me exactly what you want the definition for.
@Shokhet I never really expect to have to encounter a case where I am convinced it's clear and 5 users with VTC think it isn't. I probably would not override, but place a non-binding VTRO in a comment.
@IsaacMoses Is that a caricature of anyone specific?
@Shokhet That I called again today to ask about a different flavor, and they didn't even ask me what flavor I was asking about, and said they are all not actual dairy.
@Shokhet I have a "basic phone" (used to be called a "cell phone"), so calling is much more practical generally for me - my questions arise in the store, when I don't have email.
I am trying to post a new question that differs only in five words (the only significant ones) from a pre-existing one. I get a warning, but if I press "submit" again, the system gets stuck loading.
@ablaze I wouldn't be surprised if this isn't dealt with precisely in any sources.
But what is a bird? ....you have defined how to ID kosher birds, but how do you know to use the bird rules (as opposed to the animal, fish, or grasshopper rules) for a given species? — Shokhet8 mins ago
@IsaacMoses Really? It seems like such a pertinent issue. Maybe it’s something that was more intuitive or less pressing in times when community networks weren’t sprawled out across the planet.
@Scimonster IINM, [halacha-theory] isn't for theoretical halacha -- all [halacha] questions should then be so tagged. I think that tag is for questions about how halacha works. — Shokhet32 secs ago
@MonicaCellio Good call bringing up the mi sheberach list, but that actually seemed like a reason re’faenu would be different to me judaism.stackexchange.com/questions/49247/…
Is there a difference between the lomdus and halachah-theory tags? If so, what is it? As far as I can tell by browsing the list of questions tagged with each, they seem pretty similar.
@ablaze This seems like something that would be good to pose to your rabbi or, say, the likes of Rav Aviner (who answers all kinds of questions texted to him) and report back with what you learn.
As discussed in *Dag* (דָג) in kashrus halacha and *Tzomeach* (צוֹמֵחַ) in kashrus halacha, there are different rules used to determine the kashrus status of different animals, notably split hooves and chewing cud for animals (Devarim 14:6), fins and scales for fish (Devarim 14:9), special wings,...
Someone please proofread this answer and make sure that it makes English sense; I put too much work into it already. — Shokhet16 secs ago
@IsaacMoses This is the other MY article I think I'll print out for the chaburah, besides for vaccine and morphine.
Oh, and opting-out -- I never thought I would have to deal with that question (I didn't know anyone thought otherwise), but I surprised myself with a load of sources....and that became my top-voted answer on MY ;-)
