@DoubleAA Oh dear; bad pun.
Took me a minute to figure that one out

@DoubleAA I know; I figured it out ;-)
It's still a bad pun

8 hours later…
8:39 AM
@msh210 Y'yasher kochachem.

First gold badge!

@CharlesKoppelman Yeyasher kochacha, and thanks for exercising your franchise!
So, apparently, it is possible (but hard) to do cross-site queries on SEDE: data.stackexchange.com/codereview/query/256661/… @MonicaCellio @msh210

@IsaacMoses Anytime you want to visit my kosher Subway, let me know ;)

@CharlesKoppelman Just open it within walking distance of my office (or my subway), and I will!

At one point many years ago I wanted to open a bubble tea shop with wifi with a non-Jewish friend of mine. I wonder how our lives would have been had we gone down that path.
Several hundred thousand in the hole, I imagine, and much less spare time, but who knows!

3:33 PM
@IsaacMoses heh -- I was about to share that with you when I saw your link. I was talking with rolfl (the author) about that last night. It grew out my wondering if someone I just saw hit 10k before the initial 90-day window of a new beta had set any sort of record. :-)
(TimB, Worldbuilding, 82 days. Counting from launch of the private beta.)
And the answer is no, that's not a record. :-)
@CharlesKoppelman congratulations!

@MonicaCellio Oh, cool!

2 hours later…
5:16 PM
@MonicaCellio Thanks!

Tim
@Shokhet If you want to use it:
I just made it for a challenge, don't use if you don't want!

6:04 PM
This T. Rex question is fun.

Q: Is it acceptable under kashrut to eat tyrannosauridae meat?

EarwinTheoretically speaking, if tyrannosaurs were still present these days, or in some way or another brought back, would they be kosher? Let's assume that they are properly slaughtered and prepared.

6:40 PM
@Scimonster ... and HNQ. What a surprise.

7:02 PM
@IsaacMoses And tweeted by @mi_yodeya ;-)

@Shokhet ... what a surprise

I had to run so couldn't add all that detail to my answer right away, but wrote it anyway and just pasted it in.
@IsaacMoses :P
@Tim I think I might. Thanks!

Tim
I know part of the joke is the bad drawing so don't if it spoils that :) I won't be offended!

@Shokhet I like very much how you and NBZ made this into a tutorial on the chapter headings of the gamut of kosher animal identification. Great intro for the uninitiated.

@IsaacMoses I'm considering stealing those parts of my answer (specifically, the bird part) for a Q/A set if there isn't one already
@Tim I think the pictures can peacefully coexist :)

Tim
7:06 PM
good :)

A: Can a planet realistically have multiple suns?

Shokhet This answer was started by Pink's comment on the question. Kepler/NASA have discovered what they call "circumbinary" planets -- planets that orbit multiple suns (or "stars" or whatever you want to call them). The way it works is that there is a planet that orbits two suns, both of which orbi...

@Tim Now you'll just have to teach me how to use Inkscape ;-)

Tim
I would be happy to if you really wanted :)

I need someone to kick me off of SE for the day so I can finish a presentation I'm going to give tomorrow night ;-)
Maybe later? ;-)
.....if you have an account on GD.SE, lessons might take place there, and benefit the wider internet as well ;-)

Tim
Hmm I do have an account!
Okay, go and do that presentation... I have some homework so I should do that!
:)

:)

7:13 PM
@Shokhet ...," he said, and proceeded to post a parshanut question.

@IsaacMoses Yeah, well.....it was bothering me, and I had it written up anyway ;-)
@IsaacMoses And I also have a meta.LH question already typed up that I'm about to post.

7:26 PM
^^^ (Lifehacks)

7:43 PM
I'm confused. Isn't this the perfect answer to this question?
Why the DV?
DV removed and replaced with an upvote; never mind
......and replaced with a DV. Who is thinking what?
And now -2. I really do not understand what is wrong with that answer.

7:58 PM
Because you don't answer the question at all. You answer this question: "What are the requirements of a fish to be kosher." (And btw your answer is wrong: Only scales are required.) I asked for a definition. — NBZ 8 mins ago

@IsaacMoses I saw that, thanks.....working on that now.

@Shokhet Good thing you don't have a presentation due.

@IsaacMoses :: eyeroll ::
It's actually my chaburah on pikuach nefesh baShabbos.....I have all the material, I just need to arrange it.
I think I will print some of my Q/A sets here; vaccine, morphine, suicide (coming) for use at the chaburah

@Shokhet awesome

@DoubleAA I VTC'ed to protect other people from answering along the same lines before the question is clarified.

8:17 PM
@DoubleAA Question has been clarified, CV retracted.
@IsaacMoses I honestly thought that would be a very easy question to answer; its original iteration was very unclear.
At least I'll get a badge out of this whole experience :)

@Shokhet Hooray for rapid peer pressure review.

@Shokhet I still don't know what was unclear. I completely agree it is better now post edits, but I don't know how you thought that answered the question?

@DoubleAA The question "what is a fish in the context of kashrus" sounds like "what is a kosher fish," until you tell me exactly what you want the definition for.

@Shokhet For the purposes of Kashrut! The definition of fish as a korban could be completely different.
If I see a rule that "fish" can be eaten with meat/cheese/watermelons, what animals does that apply to?
@Shokhet They don't sound remotely similar.

@DoubleAA It doesn't matter in any event; question is now clear.
@DoubleAA If that's the intended context, shouldn't that be put into the question? ....why would I have to assume that?

8:26 PM
@Shokhet I agree it should be put in (" I completely agree it is better now post edits"). Doesn't mean it was unclear beforehand.

@DoubleAA Okay. I'm still new(ish) here, still learning how this stuff works.
I guess just because I didn't understand something doesn't mean that it's unclear.
@DoubleAA .....if four other users would've VtCed, would you have unilaterally reopened due to clarity?

@IsaacMoses :)

I'll have to check the Encyclopedia Talmudit under דג; see if they have anything on this.
.....but not for a while, I've got stuff to do (cough @IsaacMoses cough)

@Shokhet I never really expect to have to encounter a case where I am convinced it's clear and 5 users with VTC think it isn't. I probably would not override, but place a non-binding VTRO in a comment.

8:30 PM
@DoubleAA Okay, just curious.
@YeZ Did you get my ping on your answer, just now?
I know you started that answer, but I'm not sure if OP gets pung for a CW post.

YeZ
@Shokhet Ya I did - I was observing the same thing (that I got the ping). I also can't upvote for the same reason. (which seems silly to me)

8:46 PM
@YeZ Well, it's your post at heart, isn't it? ......I wrote "@YEZ," on that comment, but the system auto-removed it.
And that comment got erased.....I'm not sure by who, or why.
Wasn't me.

YeZ
@Shokhet Well, you certainly couldn't have removed my response, so I knew it wasn't you.

@YeZ .....what'd you say? I never saw it.

YeZ
@IsaacMoses Is that a caricature of anyone specific?
@Shokhet That I called again today to ask about a different flavor, and they didn't even ask me what flavor I was asking about, and said they are all not actual dairy.

@YeZ just an idiom

@YeZ Oh; nice!
@YeZ You call? ....I just email them.

YeZ
8:54 PM
@Shokhet I have a "basic phone" (used to be called a "cell phone"), so calling is much more practical generally for me - my questions arise in the store, when I don't have email.

@YeZ I also have a basic phone. I email them from my computer ;-)
@YeZ Also, calling is better for in-store -- it sometimes takes a day or two till they answer.

YeZ
@Shokhet which I assume you don't have with you in the store.

(but you can send an email really lat at night)
@YeZ That is correct. Usually.

YeZ
@Shokhet righto. But I generally don't have premeditated kashrus questions.
except for the ones I ask on MY

Q: Posting a similar question

NBZI am trying to post a new question that differs only in five words (the only significant ones) from a pre-existing one. I get a warning, but if I press "submit" again, the system gets stuck loading.

@ablaze I wouldn't be surprised if this isn't dealt with precisely in any sources.
But what is a bird? ....you have defined how to ID kosher birds, but how do you know to use the bird rules (as opposed to the animal, fish, or grasshopper rules) for a given species? — Shokhet 8 mins ago

@IsaacMoses Really? It seems like such a pertinent issue. Maybe it’s something that was more intuitive or less pressing in times when community networks weren’t sprawled out across the planet.

@ablaze I think that's right. More intuitive.
@Shokhet, I guess there's a kal vechomer there that vindicates your earlier confusion.

10:10 PM
@IsaacMoses Yup.
@Scimonster IINM, [halacha-theory] isn't for theoretical halacha -- all [halacha] questions should then be so tagged. I think that tag is for questions about how halacha works. — Shokhet 32 secs ago
^^^ what do you (any, all) think of that?

@Shokhet I agree

@Shokhet That makes sense to me.
@MonicaCellio Good call bringing up the mi sheberach list, but that actually seemed like a reason re’faenu would be different to me judaism.stackexchange.com/questions/49247/…

@ablaze @IsaacMoses Fixed, with a comment. Thanks for the input!

@ablaze good point. I don't know -- I hope someone who does writes an answer.

Q: lomdus and halachah-theory

msh210Is there a difference between the lomdus and halachah-theory tags? If so, what is it? As far as I can tell by browsing the list of questions tagged with each, they seem pretty similar.

@Shokhet I only put HT on questions about halachik process, roughly. But most use it differently AFAICT so I don't go removing everything on my own.
I don't like how I worded my answer there now, but I think that's what I was getting at.

10:21 PM
@DoubleAA From your answer there: "while halacha-theory relates to questions about theoretical issues about psak and general halacha concepts."
@DoubleAA I didn't notice that you had already said that.

@ablaze This seems like something that would be good to pose to your rabbi or, say, the likes of Rav Aviner (who answers all kinds of questions texted to him) and report back with what you learn.

@IsaacMoses Yes, I’m gonna do that. There’s got to be an answer

Q: What defines a "בהמה"?

ShokhetAs discussed in *Dag* (דָג) in kashrus halacha and *Tzomeach* (צוֹמֵחַ) in kashrus halacha, there are different rules used to determine the kashrus status of different animals, notably split hooves and chewing cud for animals (Devarim 14:6), fins and scales for fish (Devarim 14:9), special wings,...

^^^ IMO, that question is worded much more clearly than the other ones, but this will be the last comment on that topic. ;-)

10:47 PM
Well, now it is, after @DoubleAA helped me out with it :)

1 hour later…
11:48 PM
Someone please proofread this answer and make sure that it makes English sense; I put too much work into it already. — Shokhet 16 secs ago
@IsaacMoses This is the other MY article I think I'll print out for the chaburah, besides for vaccine and morphine.
Oh, and opting-out -- I never thought I would have to deal with that question (I didn't know anyone thought otherwise), but I surprised myself with a load of sources....and that became my top-voted answer on MY ;-)
