@msh210 BTW, the sefer I was quoting - אלף המגן - is a most amazing and unique sefer. It discusses every Haftorah and ממילא provides wonderful explanations to different sections of נביאים. Unfortunately, it’s not available online (yet).

Q: Did Rashi wear a yarmulke?

Shimon bMTractate Sofrim (14:14) records two opinions that concern the wearing of a head covering during the Shema: there are those who say that it is not necessary, and there are those who say that it is necessary, since one whose head is uncovered may not pronounce the name of God. According to the Bet ...

"com evitar que una persona del sexe contrari et doni la ma?" http://judaism.stackexchange.com/questions/7531/how-to-tactfully-circumvent-opposite-gender-handshake el Yahoo! Respuestas per jueus
Anyone want to translate this? GTranslate doesn't give me a complete translation.

YEZ
@IsaacMoses how to avoid shaking hands with the opposite sex? (my sources say it looks like italian)

@YEZ Google thinks its Spanish and translates more of it as that. I guess your translation makes sense, since that's the title of the linked question. "sexe contrari" = "opposite sex" makes sense.

YEZ
7:49 PM
@IsaacMoses My two spanish-speaking immediate family members both say it looks Italian (although one said maybe even latin)

@YEZ Alright. Thanks. Any Italian-speakers in the house?

YEZ
@IsaacMoses no, but my brother just "concluded" that it is a language called Catalan, spoken in northeast Spain.

@YEZ Ha! GTranslate likes that idea
>"how to stop a person from the opposite sex give you the hand?" judaism.stackexchange.com / ... Yahoo! respuestas Jews
I assume the last part is something like "the Jewish Yahoo! Answers"

YEZ
@IsaacMoses You're hoping "respuestas" isn't Catalan for "stinky"

@YEZ It's Spanish for "answers."
@YEZ Y"K to your brother for awesome language skills.

YEZ
7:58 PM
@IsaacMoses although the original translation I gave you was from mi madre.

@YEZ Y"K to her as well
@YEZ OK, @mi_yodeya tweeted back "Gràcies per l'enllaç!" I hope that makese sense in Catalan.
I do believe that's the first time I've ever tweeted in Catalan.

YEZ
@IsaacMoses Hi ha una primera vegada per a tot
^^^ also courtesy of Gtranslate

@YEZ Before I go there and check, I'm gonna guess: "There's a first time for everything."
Bingo!

YEZ

@DoubleAA wow, seriously? I'm missing it too, I'm afraid.
@IsaacMoses wow, Catalan -- nice job all on identifying it. (I was stuck at "doesn't look Italian", so if it wasn't Spanish...)

@MonicaCellio ID was thanks to @YEZ' brother

Thanks, YEZ's brother!

Well, the original tweeter favorited @mi_yodeya's reply, so I guess it was intelligible. :)

@IsaacMoses or Catalan speakers are very polite.

@YEZ Or, there is at least one Catalan speaker who was feeling very polite for some amount of time earlier today.

@IsaacMoses on at least one side... no wait, never mind. :-)
