The gatherings of family and friends, the giving and receiving of gifts, the making and/or breaking of New Year’s resolutions – however you and yours celebrate, the end of a calendar year heralds many traditions.

Here at Stack Exchange, we wanted to get each of you an awesome, personal gift, and mail it to you as our way of saying “thanks.” But our accountant pointed out that there are 4.5 million of you, which promptly reminded us that the holidays aren’t about gifts. The real spirit of the holidays can only be captured with… …

Welp, @WAF, we may not be mods anymore, but at least we got these swell Mod hats!
@IsaacMoses Ping!

@HodofHod cool! I didn't realize that.

:D
I also love how someone was kind enough to put a menorah on @Community's head.

@HodofHod heh, I wonder who did that. Since hats can now be worn everywhere (not just on the site where you earned 'em), it could have been anybody. Well, whoever it was, nice choice!

@HodofHod Nice! Thanks for letting me know.

5:42 AM
I gotta say, it being the season and all, that I'm proud to have this hat, too:

Q: Drinking water and tefilin

Avram LevittIf I am wearing Tefilin, and I feel very thirsty, should I take off my Tefllin to drink, (if I am even allowed to interrupt) or am I allowed to drink water while wearing Tefilin?

^^^ I keep seeing this title and parsing it wrong in my head.

@mods - Why no promotion of this week's parsha in the community bulletin this week?

@MonicaCellio, very astute observations in your blog post on Vayechi. Along similar lines, see this on the singling out of Menashe and Efraim in blessing children and my comment there.

3:14 PM
@IsaacMoses thank you, for both the compliment and the interesting insight from R' Rakeffet.

3:45 PM
@IsaacMoses Wow!

3:59 PM
@HodofHod Yup, Exhibit A that longevity does not always imply knowledge. :)

=D

4:56 PM
That Reanimated "hat" is really creepy. :-)

@MonicaCellio I gave it a spirally eye!

5:13 PM
@IsaacMoses heh!

Why are some hats (e.g. the ones here and here) really big?

7:53 PM

@TRiG "limb" is an imprecise translation of a word that's probably better translated as "body parts"

@TRiG Limbs is a bad translation - אבר means part of the body.
@IsaacMoses Snap!

Q: May one name a child Muhammad, Mahmud, or Mehmet?

MalperThere is a halacha that one may not name a child after an evildoer, a principle known as shem reshaim yirkav. This comes from Yoma 38b: ועל בן קמצר וחביריו נאמר ושם רשעים ירקב מאי ושם רשעים ירקב אמר ר' אלעזר דקביבות תעלה בשמותן דלא מסקינן בשמייהו Regarding Ben Kamtzar and his companions ...

@MosheP. Where I come from, the correct term is "Jinx!"

@IsaacMoses I think this question is potentially explosive.

@MosheP. We've dealt with such potential before. It is problematic in that there's nothing in it that clearly motivates it. Why does he want to know about these names, in particular? (Yes, I could guess, but who knows if I'm right?)

@MosheP. Ah. That makes a bit more sense, yes.
Well, that was an interesting read, anyway.

10:36 PM
@TRiG @MosheP. ... makes me wonder how that oft-used translation to "limb" became so popular. Do we owe this to King James somehow?

@IsaacMoses Nach Yomi Learner - this may interest you: shlomokluger.com/Other-Books/Chanukas-HaTorah/…
@IsaacMoses Speaking of mistranslations of body parts - Chazal teach in the gemara Megillah that Vashti had a זנב, and people commonly translate it as a tail. In fact because of this there is a question on this website about this. But the correct translation is an appendage, which of course includes a tail...
@IsaacMoses Here in Israel the kids come home with a picture of Vashti with a massive growth on her head, because this is the understanding of the gemara according to some - IIRC the Alshich says this pshat.
