@Gnintendo Hello, I can suggest Dummit and Foote (an algebra text, as opposed to a text devoted to group theory), but you might also want to look at Rotman's group theory text. But I can be a bit more specific if you told me what you'd like the reference to cover ...

@Gnintendo ...(for physicists (and most chemists), group theory is synonymous with (what mathematicians call) representation theory while mathematicians study groups for themselves (of course, deep things in group theory are borrowed from the ideas in representation theory)).

My most recent TeX project was the conversion of the old amateur radio club constitution at our university (I'm the new President somehow)

we are in the lucky position of most of our officers knowing TeX to some degree, but I wrote up a little guide for those that didn't ( github.com/GBeauregard/osuarcconstitution if you care)

I'm actually pretty happy with how that constitution came out: I'm not sure I agree with the template I was given for formatting it, but the way I was able to follow it was pretty elegant (imo)

@egreg but alas, you are extraordinary cases! Until I get around to learning how to write a TeX package, the ability to decipher existing TeX code eludes me. I am currently restricted to dancing around macros.

@egreg No, now there is only one. But, I want to define it with two arguments. The second argument would be passed as \caption{#2}, I believe.

Anyway, \newcommand{\foo}[2][<default>]{...} defines \foo admitting the syntaxes \foo{<arg>} or \foo[<oarg>]{<arg>}. In the body of the definition you refer to the optional argument by #1 and to the mandatory one by #2.

@MarioS.E. The redefinition will be local to the table environment.

@MarioS.E. Every environment forms a group (in TeXnical sense); "normal" assignments are local to groups and will be undone at its end. The truth is much more complex than can be written here, but this is sufficient for most applications.
