@PauloCereda Lucy's fine. How are yours? (I was trying to remember your cats' names so I could ask, but haven't managed to yet. I think you had two?)
@yo' I've certainly had it measured. I don't remember if they were weighing them. I've also had them try to take it off me, but when I started asking if they'd be responsible for my laptop, they gave up. (We were on the tarmac at this point.) That had nothing to do with size or weight, though. Only where you were in the queue to board.
@FaheemMitha Exactly.

@cfr If you say "there's a couple lithium batteries in my electronics", they'll let you be, as that has to be in the cabin :)

@cfr Fubá is great, thanks! Naughty, lazy and cuddly -- quite the package! He's 20 but behaves like a kitten! Ciça has passed away a couple of years ago. She was 17.

@PauloCereda 20, OMG!
@CarLaTeX I know! Quite impressive!
@PauloCereda You take very good care of her!
@CarLaTeX <3
09:08
@PauloCereda of him, sorry
@CarLaTeX quack :)

2 hours later…
11:17
@PauloCereda Impressive! The Dante mailing list discusses since a week how difficult it is to get it in Germany - maybe we all should move to such a civilised country like yours :)
@samcarter ooh maybe I could sell these books during TUG
@PauloCereda given the many voices on the mailing list, there certainly would be a demand :) -- You could get rich!
@samcarter Hallo, das Buch ist auf den tisch
My German is so good
@PauloCereda Very good!
@samcarter on a serious note, I think I got the books way earlier than the original ETA. Amazon probably gave me mid August as a deadline.
11:22
@PauloCereda Express delivery for VID (very important duck)!
@samcarter ooh <3
@PauloCereda I just tackled a very difficult geometrical problem: how to pack ducks in a suitcase without taking up too much space :) I wonder if any mathematicians already solved this problem theoretically
@samcarter ooh maybe get a bigger backpack :)
Speaking of which, I need to start packing my stuff
@PauloCereda This could make for a good conversation in the store: "Excuse me, may I try this backpack? I need to make sure all my ducks fit in there."
@samcarter ooh see matrix
12:01
@samcarter If you look for duck packing in the index of any book, it will say "see stuffed turkey"...
@mickep oh no :)

Bonn weather report: The current heat wave (around 34 Celsius) is supposed to break in the night between Tuesday and Wednesday. From then on a week of moderate temperatures (23/24 Celsius) is predicted. The weather will be variable, the occasional shower possible. Some soothsayers see the greatest likelihood on Saturday, others on Sunday. No sweaters needed - if you are not from Brazil. We‘ll keep you informed about the latest developments.
The start of play on the third day of the Ashes Test is delayed because of rain at Headingley.
^^^ @PauloCereda
I will definitely need a sweater. :)
@UlrikeFischer ooh Bär forecast
@UlrikeFischer Wunderbar!
@PauloCereda Or Wunderbär, as you would put it.

1 hour later…
14:39
Hmmm I need something for these flights
@TeXnician ^^ :)
15:03
@PauloCereda There's this great activity called sleeping, you know. Especially when you depart at 23:50 ;)

15:43
@PauloCereda Very sorry to hear that, though 17 is impressive. 20 is fantastic!
@yo' That was probably it :).

@cfr <3 See Fubá almost two years ago: images.ctfassets.net/nrgyaltdicpt/7i2oZdXjK49bIEJBZ3w1r9/… :)

Any germans? Do I get it right that I can still use my old ticket? I only need to book a seat (if I want that) for another train?
@mickep If you booked a Flex Ticket, you can use this with any IC/EC train (that is not with ICE, but with any other DB or regional train) on the same day anyways
@JasperHabicht Thanks. Yes, but I probably did not book a flex ticket. But if they cancel the train I just assume I can use it. Otherwise they would have re-paid at least, I guess.
@mickep Yes. Your connection has changed but not your fault so you can use your ticket freely on the same day and same route.
@mickep According to traveller's rights, this rule also apples for non Flex Tickets if the train you booked has been cancelld
@mickep Yes, you can even without flex ticket.
17:40
Perfect, thanks guys!
@JasperHabicht It has as the image clearly says ;)
@mickep Perfect? Wait till you actually travel with DB :D
@TeXnician I just wanted to state the general rules. Sure, this also applies here =)
@TeXnician ooh the DPC excuse method
@mickep You can also nicely ask the DB staff on an ICE train whether they accept to transport you and just pretend that you don't understand anything. Then, they maybe also just let you choose the ICE train =)
@TeXnician oh no
@JasperHabicht ooh I love this plan :)
17:44
@PauloCereda It's a good plan but its chances of success vary greatly. German conductors are … interesting ;)
But we should be happy that there is no strike on the railway lines during TUG. Not to be taken for granted these days.
@TeXnician Hallo Herr Schaffner, du gehst mir auf den Keks.
@PauloCereda =D This is exactly the right way to approach them
@JasperHabicht ooh
Auch jetzt haben wir den Salat!
I am gonna do fine in Germany
@PauloCereda Salad with duck strips, yummy ;)
@TeXnician oh nein
17:48
@PauloCereda You will. As long as you stay clear of Germans :D
@TeXnician ooh ich verstehe nur Bahnhof!
3
@TeXnician I did yesterday, from Hamburg to Copenhagen (maybe joint project with DSB). Over 1 hour delay. Very warm. Packed. But well, I have Urlaub, so... :)
@mickep ooh chocolate
@JasperHabicht I did not find any better ICE connection, so I have booked some seat on a route where I have to change train two times. We'll see if we meet at TUG :)
@mickep Yes, DB makes you enjoy your vacation. As we say in German “in vollen Zügen genießen” (literally: enjoy in full trains; idiom: enjoy to the fullest) :D
17:52
(Kopenhagen is a famous chocolate parlour here)
@TeXnician Haha!
@mickep Depends on where you have to change ;)
@TeXnician ooh und das Leben ist kein Ponyhof. :)
I will stop now. :)
@PauloCereda No, wifi in DB trains is the wurstest! (especilaly in packed trains)
@JasperHabicht oh no :)
17:56
@TeXnician Hannover and Düsseldorf. But I now see that all three trains are ICE trains... They will throw me off. :)
@JasperHabicht You misspelled it: not “no, wifi” but rather “no wifi”, especially in regional trains ;)
@mickep Your original EC actually is going to depart regularly on all TUG days (6:45 from Hamburg Hbf). It just does not go to Bonn Hbf but Bonn-Beuel. You can take a bus from there.
@TeXnician Oh! Haha, I wonder why they did not just write that!? :)
(I go on Friday)
@mickep Because DB does not know anything about their own services.
@mickep Check for yourself but the EC9 from platform 14 is on schedule. And Bonn-Beuel is really well connected.
17:59
Then maybe the train back on Sunday 16:45 that I also received a notice that is is cancelled will go? From Bonn-Beuel.
@mickep the hotel we will stay is a mere 4 minute walk to the conference hotel
@mickep If you booked EC8 to Hamburg-Harburg, then yes, it departs from Bonn-Beuel on Sunday.
@PauloCereda That is perfect, indeed. Very close to the train station.
@mickep ooh
@mickep Yes, it is. Was my primary reason for choosing it. Drop out of the station, drop luggage off, proceed to TUG :)
18:00
@TeXnician I booked from Bonn Hbf to Hamburg Hbf.
@TeXnician ooh German efficiency
@TeXnician Oh, dodos travel lightly... I only need my Badehosen. ;)
@mickep No direct connection at the moment but this one looks close.
How many of us will stay there? @mickep, @TeXnician, @samcarter, me... who else?
@TeXnician Looks very good indeed, thanks!!
18:02
@mickep I would take one bus earlier (3 mins is impossible) but otherwise a pretty sound connection.
@PauloCereda Marei?
@TeXnician Yes, good to have some marginal. Can one buy bus tickets on the bus? Or shall I buy them also in advance?
@TeXnician Unfortunately no, she will stay in another one. Only if she could not get an extra night on Tuesday.
@mickep You can buy on the bus (iirc, have not been in Bonn for a few years).
@PauloCereda Ah, right, bad memory :D
@TeXnician I'll get that info on the way to TUG.
@mickep Right. Or you ask our Bonn residents here in chat ;)
18:05
@TeXnician Oh, good idea. @UlrikeFischer, is it possible to buy bus tickets on the bus in Bonn?
@PauloCereda where?
@StefanKottwitz ah sorry, forgot to mention... Motel One. :)
@mickep Yes, you can. In which hotel are you?
@mickep So, I seems this is due to construction works in/around Cologne Main Station and more or less all trains that go to Bonn via Cologne are not calling at Cologne (Köln) Hbf and Bonn Hbf, but at Cologne Tradefair/Deutz (Köln Messe/Deutz) and Bonn-Beuel instead.
@UlrikeFischer Same as Paulo and the others.
18:11
@mickep If you got City-Plus on your ticket, you should be able to just use the local tram/bus in Bonn for free (on this day as extension to your train ride, so to say)
@JasperHabicht Ha, thanks! Then I will use my original ticket for the parts where it still goes.
@PauloCereda near main train station?
@mickep The same is valid in the city of departure then, so if you need to use ÖPNV (tram/subway/bus) to get to the station, you can use the train ticket if it has this
@StefanKottwitz yes, that one! Let me get the full name
@StefanKottwitz this: Hotel Motel One Bonn-Hauptbahnhof
18:13
@mickep Normally, regardless whether you booked Flex or Spar, if the distance of your travel by train is more than 100 km, it is automatically booked to your ticket
@JasperHabicht Hm, OK. The ticket says something about NV. I will ask the personal on the train.
@JasperHabicht Except you get Supersparpreis.
@mickep Then tell the bus driver that you go to "Hauptbahnhof". That is Tarif 1b and costs imho 3.20€. The alternative is to get an app which supports eezy-ticket (eezy.nrw/de/hilfe/so-funktioniert-eezy-nrw). There you check in when you board and check out when you quick and it calculates the price by distance. Typically cheaper (but needs online connection and you naturally must register first).
@mickep Do this. I don't know where you booked it =D "NV" would mean Nahverkehr, so this is bus/tram/subway ... I thnk. But better ask
One can also argue that if one has a ticket to Bonn Hbf, then the ticket should be valid all way.
18:15
@StefanKottwitz ooh I've no idea of what that means, but I gather you will also stay in that hotel! Yay! <3
@JasperHabicht It will work out, thanks. (I used the DB app)
But who will guide the Brazilian duck from Frankfurt? :))
@mickep If you need to book a ticket for bus, book it via the Navigator App, it is a tad cheaper there 3,10 € =D
@JasperHabicht Oh, then I will owe you .10. Almost a beer in Germany.
@JasperHabicht it depends a bit. For example for some reason Siegburg/Bonn fell out of the city ticket.
@UlrikeFischer Hm, perhaps because it is not Bonn anymore ... But Beuel should be included in City-Plus for Bonn, I think
18:22
@barbarabeeton Oh don't worry, I like them, but I would never pet a wild one. We have a few living in our house (behind some wooden casing on the rear end of the house -- earlier this year we even found a baby one which apparently fell and tried to rescue it, but it was already too late for it).
@Skillmon where will you stay, Mr. Rabbit?
Flying from Hamburg, just because I work for an airline
@PauloCereda in the conference hotel, but I will only make it by Friday noon, I still have to work on Thursday, and the train ride takes me 5 hours.
@Skillmon oh no /duck hug
@Skillmon Oh, where do you go from?
@StefanKottwitz Do you live close to Hamburg?
18:34
@mickep near to Kassel, but the connection is just terrible.
@Skillmon Ah, schade.
@mickep yes, I live in Hamburg
@StefanKottwitz Aha, I had coffee yesterday at "Hertz und Sucker". Sehr gut!
Time to look at the slides... (again)
@cfr yes, exactly. If it weren't for TikZ I'd not use pgfkeys at all nowadays...
@mickep funniest thing is, if I pick any connection, including IC/ICE the results I get from the DB page are slower than when I exclude them...
I'm playing with the thought to travel by car...
@Skillmon Oh, that is weird indeed.
18:47
@Skillmon ooh the rabbitmobile :)
