@barbarabeeton Hopefully. I actually know all of them and I think they'll do their best. But things aren't at the best for the University at the moment. On top of covid restraints and extra hassle there was a flood which ruined many of the distance teaching rooms so things are pretty much upside down there at the moment. :|
@AlanMunn And the saddest thing is that nobody is going to take him up on his views and have a conversation with him about it. He's just fired and shamed which is simply going to make him sink deeper into his hole.

1 hour later…
08:46
quack
@AlanMunn Therefore, it's 90.
@AlanMunn ȍőḫ
09:44
@Plergux s/twelve year old/person, s/bash/any shell, s/i3/any tiling WM; works with the students and other PhD-students as well.
@PauloCereda Hmm, we missed the chat room's recent 11111 “ooh” palindrome. But did you know that you are only responsible for slightly less than 91% of the “ooh”s on this chat? [chat.stackexchange.com/… divided by [chat.stackexchange.com/search?q=ooh&room=41](11145)

@HaraldHanche-Olsen oh no
@HaraldHanche-Olsen ooh, statistics
Argh, I can't seem to get the markdown links right …
@HaraldHanche-Olsen [<stuff>](<url>)
09:49
@Skillmon Oh yeah, I get em backwards. And I missed the edit deadline by a few seconds. 🥲
@yo' not that I'm aware of, but as others have noted, that's a job for detexify or memory.
@HaraldHanche-Olsen yeah, the edit timeout in chat is way too short.
@HaraldHanche-Olsen ooh, working links. (now your numbers are wrong)
@Skillmon ooh
@HaraldHanche-Olsen ooh
@PauloCereda ooh
@PauloCereda ooh, now both numbers are wrong.
09:54
@Skillmon ooh
@Skillmon Yeah, you ruined them. And lowered @PauloCereda's ratio in the process. But he is catching up!
@HaraldHanche-Olsen ooh rabbits are naughty
@PauloCereda wabbits? I don't see any wabbits here. Do you?
@HaraldHanche-Olsen ooh wabbit season
@PauloCereda There's a season on wabbits? Like for ducks?
09:56
@HaraldHanche-Olsen oh no
/quacks in despair
@DavidCarlisle help
@PauloCereda I am sure he will help with the cooking.
@HaraldHanche-Olsen oh no
@HaraldHanche-Olsen Now I wonder how the statistik is for "zz" on the main site.

11:25
@PauloCereda don't worry, it'll soon be lunchtime
@DavidCarlisle oh no
@UlrikeFischer did you notice the recent question with an error in a zz macro? Shocking.
@DavidCarlisle interezzting
@DavidCarlisle that triggered my comment ;-)

1 hour later…
12:48
@Skillmon Yeah, being able to turn on the computer impressed the ladies I worked with at the preschool XD
13:22
@UlrikeFischer Could you let me know where the expansion issue is? I've taken a quick look and don't spot it in the PDF backend
@JosephWright The issue is that I'm not sure if there is an issue somewhere in my backend code and so wrote in the management docu that one shouldn't rely on the backend to expand (or not expand) something that should end as a pdf string or name, at least not for now. When we move the extra backend to l3backend the expansion behaviour should then be checked and perhaps corrected.
13:53
@Plergux I bet if you would have shown them ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/plain/contrib/xii they would have fainted :)
14:10
@samcarter_waiting_for_summer s/fainted/been even more impressed/ I am sure you meant to say.
@DavidCarlisle fainted because they are soooo impressed
14:30
@UlrikeFischer Ah, right: for the core l3backend-pdf I have suppressed expansion I hope
15:08
@samcarter_waiting_for_summer LOL They would have burned me for sorcery XD
@Plergux Oh, I do know that problem: red hair + black cat
@samcarter_waiting_for_summer Red hair here too, but no cat. But they'd probably get me on the same grounds as Joan of Arc. :p
15:49
@Plergux ooh sacred bleu
@PauloCereda isn't it "sacre"? :p
@Plergux no idea, no hablo español :)
oh wait, it's French
@PauloCereda heh heh heh... perkele...
@Plergux Sono inglese di Gerrard's Cross!
@PauloCereda Bitte mein herr! Wass ist dss Wort für Mittelschmertz?
15:57
@Plergux ooh a wild German appears. :) You want the German classes. :)
@PauloCereda Ah! Das Deutschenklassenzimmer! Danke!
@Plergux ooh heute esse ich Schokoladen!
@UlrikeFischer I'll have l3kernel off to CTAN today: finally no need to load l3pdf to \pdf_uncompress: :)
@JosephWright well as I already learned, you then need to load expl3 to get the backend code ...
@UlrikeFischer So \sys_load_backend: \pdf_uncompress: - perhaps we should arrange that some commands force backend loading
16:19
@JosephWright well the pdfmanagement will always force the loading, so I'm not sure if it is worth the trouble to do much. But for \pdf_uncompress: it would be handy ... I'm using that so often.

1 hour later…

xkeyval Error: 'langbasque' undefined. No wonder, it's an isolate. :)

ooh
Hi everybody, good evening! Has the box name \scratchbox some special meaning?
It seems to be cleared at \begin{document}...
\documentclass[]{article}
\usepackage{tikz}
\newsavebox{\scratchbox}
% \newsavebox{\mybox}
\newcommand{\setmybox}{%
    \sbox{\scratchbox}{%
    % \sbox{\mybox}{%
    \begin{tikzpicture}
        \draw (0,0) -- ++(1,0) node{0};
    \end{tikzpicture}
    }%
}
\setmybox

\begin{document}
% this works only if you set \setmybox after the \begin{document}
\usebox{\scratchbox}
% this works always
% \usebox{\mybox}
\end{document}
If I use the name \scratchbox, at the \usebox point it is empty. If I change the name to \mybox, it is not...
@Rmano Weird. Doing a grep for scratchbox in texmf-dist/tex/latex yields only \@qscratchbox defined by qtree but nothing else.
18:34
@AlanMunn Yes --- it seems really strange to me. Maybe I should post a question on the main site... but I wanted to check I am not allucinating ;-) --- Thanks.
@Rmano And it's totally dependent on tikz, because if tikz is loaded, even putting plain text in the box doesn't work.
@Rmano It's defined by the graphics backend. (The backend loads a ConTeXt file supp-pdf.mkii for MPS to PDF conversion which defines multiple \scratch... commands.)
@MarcelKrüger That would explain why I didn't find it in my grep. I was too low in the file hierarchy.
@MarcelKrüger ...mistery solved. Thanks. Will use \myscratch... in the future.
But you really shouldn't depend on the value of any register/macro with a name including scratch/temp/tmp/etc. after running significant amounts of code you didn't write yourself. (And ''\begin{document}` definitly counts as significant amounts of code you didn't write yourself.)
18:38
@MarcelKrüger If only we had a proper name space system. :)
@AlanMunn \scr@tch ;-P
@MarcelKrüger But more seriously, it would be more sensible if core functionality did use a reasonable namespace for itself.
@AlanMunn We kind of have in expl3 and we have the @ convention in 2e, but since this comes from ConTeXt and therefore has to work with multiple formats it must use a name as compatible as possible.
@MarcelKrüger Yes, I realize the problem is really the fact that it comes from ConTeXt otherwise it would likely be more protected than it is.
@AlanMunn We have talked about importing that support file from ConTeXt. It has lots of things that we don't need, so a LaTeX-specific version would be better
18:43
@MarcelKrüger I see you managed to impersonate H. O. at ctan:-)
@DavidCarlisle ooh-berdiek
6
@MarcelKrüger I doubt anyone has ever used that though, I wonder if we can get brave enough to drop it. I just included the context file as is to save spending an afternoon writing it in 2e style and its still there decades later ....
@DavidCarlisle Hallo, ich bin Herr Oberdiek, gimme access to ze Code
@DavidCarlisle I have many identities. Last month I called myself Ulrike.
@MarcelKrüger You had an urge to be blamed for something?
18:47
@MarcelKrüger ooh-lrike
6
@PauloCereda @Paulooh it's dinner time
@DavidCarlisle oh no

1 hour later…
20:20
@egreg do you have somewhere an answer how to fake a \d (dot below) accent?
20:59
@UlrikeFischer I think so, one for XeLaTeX, I believe.
@egreg thanks that was what I was looking for ...
