12:00 AM
@nbro you can use \rule[1cm]{0pt}{0pt} or some such

where do I need to put it exactly?

2 hours later…
1:53 AM
@nbro \[\approx\underset{\theta\in\Theta}{\operatorname{arg max}}\underbrace{\frac{1}{S}\frac{1}{K}\sum_{s=1}^S\sum_{k=1}^K\log p(\mathbf{x}_k\mid\mathbf{w}_s)}_{\text{likelihood}}-\rule[1cm]{0pt}{0pt}\underbrace{\vphantom{\sum_{s=1}^S}\operatorname{KL}(q_\theta(w)\|p(w))}_{\text{regularization}}\]
@DavidCarlisle what was the command to write text in math? Not \text but kinda. Like $\textmath{def}$?

2:04 AM
@DavidCarlisle in lesson-15 the code block under ## Anatomy ... seems to use some special formatting for \textbold, but that seems to no longer work after ace.js

2 hours later…
4:30 AM
@DavidCarlisle Ignore my last message. I messed up something and git showed me an old version.
@DavidCarlisle @JosephWright Did I make it on time? github.com/learnlatex/learnlatex.github.io/pull/62 :-)

2 hours later…
6:53 AM
@DavidCarlisle would you like to have a Spanish translation of learnlatex?
@samcarter_left_tex.se best of luck today <3

@manooooh Thanks a lot!
@manooooh Are you still awake or already awake?
(I'm neither, my neighbours had a garden party until about 3 hours ago ...)

yo'
@samcarter_left_tex.se oh no! :(

@yo' Having a big cup of coffee right now. Let's see if this helps :)

7:13 AM
@PhelypeOleinik yes I can no longer higlight the error but (hopefully) I do move the cursor to the error point so the line is highlighted and the editor cursor is there
@manooooh Just get @PauloCereda to add some ~ to the Portuguese version? (I understand all these languages:-)

@samcarter_left_tex.se I don't fully understand the difference but I am still awake. I want to see your talk, waiting!
@samcarter_left_tex.se uh was the music loud?
@DavidCarlisle that's not enough, not enough... hahaha

@manooooh there may still be some minor changes to the English but yes if you want to try a pull request for Spanish would be welcome.

:D After this week I will be starting holidays. Maybe I can start to see how to translate and ask questions

@manooooh Oh wow! I feel honoured!
@manooooh Loud enough to wake up half a dozen times or so

@PhelypeOleinik cross ref lesson?

7:33 AM
@DavidCarlisle github.com/learnlatex/learnlatex.github.io/issues/35 and learnlatex.org/TRANSLATIONS are more helpful IMHO. I will take a look, thanks!

@manooooh yes the paragraph I linked to links to translations page so I thought I'd start there but seems you have all the info. If you look at the portuguese pages you will see they changed a couple of minutes ago:-)

@DavidCarlisle well, as you have commented if the English version is not in the final version, the translations will not be as powerful as they should be. I want to make sure to fully understand the process, post an issue in the correct place, post the proper code etc.

@manooooh we are getting to the end with the english version so we no longer actively stop people translating, but the course has not really been used by any actual learners yet, so we need to have flexibility to change things after user experience/comments, so there may need to be followup edts to the translations, but the good thing with git os that you can easily find all the English changes since the revision where you forked to start a translation

OK that's fine. The monitoring will be important

7:53 AM
@yo' do you have better bandwidth than Arthur for hosting?

yo'
@DavidCarlisle seems so

could you host Jonathan's? this isn't really working...

quack

@DavidCarlisle I'm on Zoom and the video is lagging...
Perhaps I am not welcome

same for everyone see my comments above

7:55 AM
JF

yo'
@DavidCarlisle yep I know
(not our fault this time...)

@yo' ooh

Too bad there are technical problems :(

@mickep :(

Zoom is complicated if it is the first time you use it

8:05 AM
@manooooh I've been teaching with zoom all Spring, but never streamed a video. It seems to be complicated.

Speakers were invited to use pre-recorded videos as a means to mitigate some issues, but it seems there are still problems... :(

@PauloCereda I wonder if live presentation wouldn't have been smother :)

@mickep completely agree :(

@samcarter_left_tex.se You will find out with my talk, I will be presenting live...

@MarcelKrüger Oh, cool! I'm looking forward to it!

8:08 AM
@samcarter_left_tex.se have you recorded the talk?

@manooooh Yes and wondering if this was a good decision :)

@samcarter_left_tex.se if you uploaded the video on a website you can share the link, that would be awesome if there are problems with Zoom sharing screen

@samcarter_left_tex.se Good morning, I am <redacted> (talk is broadcast late in the night in here) :)
@MarcelKrüger ooh looking forward to it
Marcel is awesome :)

@PauloCereda Hi! Nice talks from you yesterday!

@samcarter_left_tex.se Thanks. Sadly the design of my slides isn't as great as yours. Really looking forward to the TopTeX talk!

8:15 AM
@MarcelKrüger Thanks, but the content is much more important and I'm sure yours will be very interesting!

@samcarter_left_tex.se Oh I meant from a talk yesterday. :)
@samcarter_left_tex.se and hi! Looking forward for your talk! <3

Oh, @JosephWright is up next! Yay!

It's an interesting contrast currently: First the talk about teaching TeX in the humanities, now a talk which seems to exclusively consider math mode.

@MarcelKrüger :)

8:18 AM
BTW, did anyone forward the links to the YouTube videos to the YouTube stream of the conference or can they somehow see the chat too?

@MarcelKrüger: in TUG 2018, on behalf of @samcarter_left_tex.se, I talked bout tikzducks. Will Robertson was the next to talk. He loved the duck package that, during my talk, he added a hook (oh no, hooks) to each slide of his talk (a fontspec one, I guess) to include a random duck. :)

I feel sorry for Mr. Fine. Maybe the organisers should give him another chance later, if possible?

@mickep good idea

@manooooh Good idea! My backup is here: gigamove.rz.rwth-aachen.de/d/id/…

@samcarter_left_tex.se Germans are awesome :)

8:23 AM
@PauloCereda :)

@JosephWright @DavidCarlisle I look a bit at the middle video, he is complaining that you have to click on a button to get the math back and that you get a full page instead of only the math, and he got it wrong who is now providing latex online.

@samcarter_left_tex.se is not online? :( I mean I downloaded it, it's not so heavy considering it is 11:18 long. I meant to be uploaded to be watched online so that participants do not have to deal with the problem of downloading and opening it on their machines
Btw I like it when you thank the organization! (spoiler alert whoops)

@manooooh I don't have a video platform handy right now. For backup this has to do

@samcarter_left_tex.se don't you have YouTube account? 7MB can be uploaded in a few minutes!

@manooooh No, I try to stay away from these things

8:27 AM
@UlrikeFischer yes I watched:-)

@UlrikeFischer I've had a few PC issues: what did I miss?

@UlrikeFischer I have wondered about making the result frame bigger so it needs scrolling less often but then its... bigger

OK. I'm fine with the link you provided, for me was quite easy, I hope the same happens with the rest of the participants

@DavidCarlisle ooh

@JosephWright You missed pc issues

8:28 AM
@JosephWright oh no

@JosephWright technically something of a disaster, the videos didn't work from zoom we had to watch on youtuibe

@DavidCarlisle oh no

yo'
@PauloCereda well, the issue is that only during the talk we realized that the audio and video were misaligned, and then there was some difficult discussion about the solution. There was an easy way how to make it working, but the speaker refused to go that way.

@yo' oh no :(
It's not my fault, right?

@PauloCereda blame @UlrikeFischer

8:29 AM
@JosephWright he spoke about learnlatex and showed a screenshot. he thinks it is not for beginner because the most important thing for beginner is to be able to type 2+2=4.

If the problems don't come to you, you go to them. @yo'

yo'
@PauloCereda no, this is the current speaker's fault (and I don't mean Joseph)

My second talk yesterday had some video quality issues in some parts, but the YouTube broadcast was fine.
@DavidCarlisle ooh
@yo' oh :)

yo'
but it means we're probably delayed now for @JosephWright 's talk (~5-10 minutes hopefully)

@UlrikeFischer Huh??

8:30 AM
@JosephWright you should be starting your talk right now, but Jonathan keeps waiting for us to finish watching the video (which I don't know how he knows who finished watching it and who didn't lol)

@JosephWright "if you need to type a whole document you are not a beginner"

@DavidCarlisle Oh, right: in my talk I do say up-front I'm looking at LaTeX as a document preparate system
@DavidCarlisle Did he consider non-mathematicians?
2

@JosephWright he said that, really (not quite with this words), but in his opinion the first step is to type equations, not a hello world document.
@JosephWright no.

@JosephWright do they exist?! :)

@JosephWright no, explicitly excluded them

8:33 AM
@DavidCarlisle oh

ooh the dinosaur bloke is here
@jokerdino hi mr. dino!

hello
It took me some 6 hours to convert 28 page word document into LaTeX.
I knew I was doing many things wrong.
but at least I am no longer a beginner.

yo'
@jokerdino that would be quite expected, yeah :-)

@jokerdino Good thing you weren't in this room yesterday: we discussed meteors and as I understand they are dangerous for dinosaurs
3

@jokerdino <3

8:35 AM
oh nooo

@samcarter_left_tex.se LOL

@DavidCarlisle I seen you are on Zoom. Did Jonathan post the sites where he tested the codes? Except the last one (learnlatex.org)? I'm embarrassed to ask an obvious thing there

Nobody around me knows anything about LaTeX so I can't share anything about my learning process with them. Anyway, I learned about SyncTex (very useful) and figured how to add a snippet to bold and emphasize the selected text so it helped a great deal during the typesetting process.

@manooooh yes they are links in the zoom chat.

8:38 AM
@jokerdino You can always come here to talk about your learning process, we are all ears :)

@JosephWright Do you know when your talk will start?

@UlrikeFischer I came in late. I only see YouTube links

@manooooh ^^^
Do you just see a still of Ross Moore in zoom?

8:39 AM
@samcarter_left_tex.se ^^ let's see how many people will play Animal Crossing. :)

@DavidCarlisle yes

We lost a speaker...

He left...

@DavidCarlisle thanks!

@PauloCereda Well, one has to do something while waiting for the talks to resume :)

8:44 AM
@samcarter_left_tex.se Exactly :)
@samcarter_left_tex.se @JosephWright is a dissident, he plays Overcooked in Xbox One. :)

@PauloCereda I don't know this game, but it sounds like something @DavidCarlisle would play

@JosephWright they are looking for you
4

@samcarter_left_tex.se :)

Bermuda triangle of talks: speakers keep disappearing

@DavidCarlisle he is fighting against PC problems

yo'
8:48 AM
btw, @PauloCereda you got up like at 3am, no?

38 mins ago, by Paulo Cereda
@samcarter_left_tex.se Good morning, I am <redacted> (talk is broadcast late in the night in here) :)

@samcarter_left_tex.se I will watch your talk around 6:15 AM yaaay

@yo' yes. :)

@manooooh I hope you don't have to man any machines or drive afterwards :)

@samcarter_left_tex.se oh no, I was talking about David Walden's talk. :)

8:50 AM
This became more exciting than watching a football match of your national team in the FIFA cup

@PauloCereda opsie

@samcarter_left_tex.se #StayAtHome :)

@manooooh I don't believe you, you are Argentinian, this simply does not follow. :)

@manooooh good plan!

@PauloCereda Argentinians play football?

8:52 AM
Hahaha

@mickep Argentinians and Brazilians are passionate about football. :)

user image

@manooooh :)

@manooooh Oh cool!
@manooooh (you should propose this as new jerseys for your national football team)

yo'
@manooooh I can't share my current env, as my table is such a mess!

9:04 AM
@samcarter_left_tex.se I will be eternally grateful to you for showing me how to create the duckling. If we mass produce it, you will take most of the profit!

@yo can you let speak or do I need to login with a speaker link (which I don't have)

@manooooh :)

@DavidCarlisle ooh

@yo' don't worry! I have the same mess in my desktop on PC :)

@DavidCarlisle Any (co-)host can promote you to panelist or just grant speaking right directly.

9:07 AM
@MarcelKrüger ooh
@DavidCarlisle I will give you $10 if you say a duck joke live
6

yo'
@DavidCarlisle doing it just now (note that it will disconnect you for a split second)

@yo' we have already drained your credit card

@PauloCereda I'll add a beer to this
3

yo'
@DavidCarlisle not mine I think :)

@yo' thanks seems to have workd

9:09 AM
I didn't know that TeXFAQ was on GitHub!

yo'
@DavidCarlisle yep seems so

@samcarter_left_tex.se ooh

yo'
@PauloCereda you were just mentioned! :)

@yo' ooh <3
@yo' broadcasting quality is stellar, I even believe for a moment that was my actual screen!

@PauloCereda agree

9:13 AM
A nightmare of couse because it's Windows. :)
@manooooh :)

yo'
@PauloCereda that's good to hear :) I think the quality of the streamer's ISP and PC matters...

@PauloCereda Now is the time to answer all new si-unitx questions and gain reputation!
3

@mickep ooh harvest juicy rep points. :)
@yo' indeed!

yo'
@PauloCereda and mine seems pretty good :)

@yo' <3

9:16 AM
I am a bit interested in "learning zztex" :)

@DavidCarlisle Joseph should've used zzz instead on his examples.
@wtsnjp ooh @DavidCarlisle

yo'
I wonder if you can hear my PC fan spinning up just now... @PauloCereda

number of users at latexcgi.xyz is increasing, watching the live logs...
4

yo'
@DavidCarlisle I wonder when you reach the limits...

@yo' I have 1G memory and a 8G disk that is 90% full, so soon:-)

yo'
9:21 AM
@DavidCarlisle :-)

@yo' no, it's fine :)
@DavidCarlisle ooh

yo'
@PauloCereda great. It gets noisy now...

@DavidCarlisle apt remove emacs should help

@DavidCarlisle don't ruin Joseph's talk!

yo'
@manooooh it's pre-recorded :D

9:23 AM
@yo' shh it's a secret :)

Hahaha
Joseph mentions the magic translated buttons OMG

yo'
@DavidCarlisle A question in the chat (for after the talk): Should I translate at least the headlines into Japanese at the time being? Will that be helpful?

yo'
@manooooh thanks!

@yo' That's mine. I am online at both here and there

yo'
9:29 AM
@wtsnjp ah! :)

@wtsnjp to be honest the stub pages were mostly for me to test the switching code if we get more real translations I may remove the languages that don't have the main body translated, but am open to suggestiins

@DavidCarlisle YOU TURN ON THE CAM

hello

hello sir!

@DavidCarlisle Ok, then I will wait until all the contents in English are ready to be translated. I prefer to translate headlines at the same time, which will reduce your work to merge (only a tiny bit, though ;-))

9:37 AM
@wtsnjp watch:
2 hours ago, by David Carlisle
@manooooh we are getting to the end with the english version so we no longer actively stop people translating, but the course has not really been used by any actual learners yet, so we need to have flexibility to change things after user experience/comments, so there may need to be followup edts to the translations, but the good thing with git os that you can easily find all the English changes since the revision where you forked to start a translation

> There was a rude comment about emacs, we will of course ignore it.
THAT'S WHY DAVID IS AWESOME

David's beard is very elegant 👀

@manooooh Oh, thanks. I didn't know it. Then, I will look for the time to begin the work!

Oh, a stream!

@samcarter_left_tex.se we will watching you!

9:42 AM
@wtsnjp thank you!
@wilx ooh
@samcarter_left_tex.se ooh <3

It sounds and looks great!

Hey @Henri! :)

@PauloCereda What's up, mate?

@HenriMenke Nothing much, lazy Saturday. :) And you?

@PauloCereda Trying to figure out how to join the social room of TUG2020.

9:48 AM
@HenriMenke Ah I simply gave up. :)

@HenriMenke I managed to join it yesterday, but I had to use Chromium, it doesn't like Firefox. And there was literary nobody online. I hope it will be better today.

@PauloCereda The mailspring link from the official email doesn't work. “This site can't be reached”
@michal.h21 I watched some lectures earlier but it was technical problems galore
@michal.h21 Living in the South Pacific really sucks. All the talks are in the middle of the night.

@HenriMenke I can relate to that. :) I woke up 3:30AM to watch stuff. :)

@PauloCereda Very dedicated. I just hope they make the recoding available eventually.

@HenriMenke yes, especially first two talks today were qute hard to follow because of technical quality

9:52 AM
@HenriMenke I just sent mine to you, just in case. :)

@PauloCereda Cheers, mate!

It started at 9am in my timezone, so I just finished breakfast :)

@PauloCereda Your Island of TeX talk was at 5:45AM for me.
@PauloCereda Obviously, I haven't watched it, but I already have a question.
@PauloCereda Are you interested in the hub.docker.com/u/contextgarden and hub.docker.com/u/texlive user profiles? They are both under my control.

@HenriMenke ooh thank you! I will poke our Docker expert about it, thank you very, very much!
@samcarter_left_tex.se you are awesome!

@DavidCarlisle do you plan to Dockerize latexcgi? It would make it easier to install it on more servers.

10:01 AM
@samcarter_left_tex.se you answered my question <3 Thank you for being patient!

@michal.h21 I am poking him about it :)

@samcarter_left_tex.se nice talk (I thought you were a duck though, seems you are human)
3

@PauloCereda keep poking :)

@DavidCarlisle She used a human disguise, clearly
@michal.h21 ooh poking

@michal.h21 not currently but it's a possibility. While it runs in a virtual machine that does nothing else but run that, there doesn't seem a lot of need.

10:03 AM
@DavidCarlisle ooh our Docker expert has a plan already (@michal.h21)

@DavidCarlisle I thought you were a human being who lived through the 19th century when I saw your profile picture, you can't complain :P

@PauloCereda I hope I am not your Docker expert :D

@michal.h21 oh no worries, it's @TeXnician :)

@DavidCarlisle :) Zoom can add virtual backgrounds, why shouldn't it be able to show a duck as human?

@PauloCereda uff :) even if I created few Docker images myself.

10:05 AM
@manooooh @PauloCereda Thanks :)

@samcarter_left_tex.se and no beer for our English bloke :)

@PauloCereda What a pity!

@samcarter_left_tex.se :) thankfully emacs was mentioned. :)

@PauloCereda :)

I wish that @marmot was here and listened to you @samcarter_left_tex.se (although he probably mentioned it in topanswers.xyz/tex) :( I miss him

10:08 AM

@DavidCarlisle ooh

@samcarter_left_tex.se was 5 users at start of the talk

Fantastic!!

@samcarter_left_tex.se nice duck on the shirt ;-)
3

10:09 AM
Speaking of ducks, where's @JosephWright? I miss him
oh here he comes

@DavidCarlisle oh, seems the talk was effective!
@UlrikeFischer :D thanks!

@samcarter_left_tex.se very!
@samcarter_left_tex.se You Germans are awesome! <3

Slow talking made us understand you better. Nice job!

@samcarter_left_tex.se I think you meant to say that the talk was rubbish but the Q&A part was brilliant?

@DavidCarlisle your beard dazzled the webcam lens

10:11 AM
@DavidCarlisle specially the emacs bit

@DavidCarlisle the talk can't be rubbish - it said more than once how good latex online works ...

@JosephWright What a pity not being able to watch you personally! Great site, congratulations to all the team, when I retire, I'll do the Italian translation :)
4

@CarLaTeX hello! Will you offer a talk soon?

@DavidCarlisle You are mean

@CarLaTeX Couldn't you translate into Latin? It would make Spanish, Portuguese and other Latin-based language translations unnecessary. :)

10:13 AM
@manooooh No, I don't, sorry
@PauloCereda No, sorry, I'm an accountant, I didn't do classical studies :)

@CarLaTeX no you are thinking of the other speaker:
Jul 10 at 16:23, by Paulo Cereda
@JosephWright you are mean :)

@CarLaTeX if @samcarter_left_tex.se could do it, you can too! (It is not pressure but a way to encourage good conferences)

@manooooh Maybe net year :)

@CarLaTeX @David would go for assum anatis ad prandium

@CarLaTeX <3

10:14 AM
oh no
@DavidCarlisle ooh

@CarLaTeX You could always convince the Professor to give a talk :)

@PauloCereda Oh no

@DavidCarlisle LOL
@CarLaTeX oh no

@samcarter_left_tex.se Yes, it could be more likely

10:15 AM
@PauloCereda eeerrrrmmm, what?
No Latin :)

@DavidPurton :)
user image
2

However I think it's the content rather than the language that catches me unawares with that
Oh

@DavidPurton :)

Ooh I see

It's late here. I'm going to sleep Thank you very much to all the speakers of the TUG 2020 online! I have enjoyed the morning

10:19 AM
@manooooh Buenos dias!

@manooooh Sleep well! Thanks for staying up for our talks!

The day you meet in Argentina I will show you how to drink mate :)

I can't attend the meeting in the afternoon, see you tonight!

See you and enjoy the rest!

@wtsnjp what could be useful would be to fill out the Japanese specific lessons, I stole an example from Overleaf (so I could test setting up the submission latexmkrc required there) and just copied it to demonstrate uplatex and lualatex and then tate vertical version but I don't really know what needs saying for beginner Japanese users so the lessons just have 6 examples and no text

10:21 AM
@CarLaTeX Enjoy your day! See you

@CarLaTeX Ciao!

10:33 AM
topskip up next

@DavidCarlisle yes, wanted too look it too, but I will have to get something to eat ... I wished I would understand all this chats, there seem to be one in youtube too, with other people
grr too late for editing, I wanted to write that I will look and then get something to eat.

@UlrikeFischer yes I decided to ignore zulip and youtube here plus the two chat channels in zoom is enough

@UlrikeFischer it seems that chat here is the most active, there is not much happening in Zulip or Zoom

@michal.h21 zoom was quite active during Joseph's talk.

@UlrikeFischer yes, it will hopefully get better now

10:43 AM
who/what decides who one see in the small window? currently I'm seeing Ross.

@UlrikeFischer I think the last person that made any noise

@samcarter_left_tex.se ah. This system always bings and then nothing happens ;-(

@UlrikeFischer I was wondering about the bings too. My theory is that it bings whenever a new user joins?

11:13 AM
@DavidCarlisle I have no idea how that translation got lost (I used a loop in the shell to make the commits...). It's there now :-)

11:23 AM
@PhelypeOleinik where's where I don't see more commits on the pull request page?
@PhelypeOleinik oh new PR I see
@PhelypeOleinik done, thanks

@DavidCarlisle Hm... I didn't know I could add commits to a PR

@PhelypeOleinik it's bonkers, isn't it :)

@PauloCereda Too early to think straight :-)

@PhelypeOleinik You can even add commits to other peoples PRs if you have commit permissions on any of the involved repos.

@MarcelKrüger I figured I couldn't because David had already merged that one. Good to know, though, thanks!

12:00 PM
How do you mute zoom without muting the whole computer?

@UlrikeFischer There is a little arrow for extended options next to the mute button. You can use it to access extended options like "Leave computer audio"

@UlrikeFischer The best (only) way I have found is to disconnect sound. But I cannot find that method in Seminar mode. Just hitting the volume botton so that it gets an "x" did not work. It put the sound almost to zero. Moreover, it looks different on different computers/phones, so it is a mess.

@MarcelKrüger hm, I tried that but it still make sounds (at least some minutes ago, currently nobody is speaking, so I can't test).

FRANK'S TALK

@PauloCereda I hope you are looking ...

12:04 PM
@UlrikeFischer ooh

@PauloCereda Oh, indeed!

12:21 PM
@DavidCarlisle nice photo :)
WHAT?!
@DavidCarlisle Ulrike's fault? :)

No image of the bär?

awww <3
We are down again
