@PauloCereda yes. For a certain type of books it is perfect: thrillers, novels and so on. It doesn't weight much, doesn't take much place, you can take many books with you, handle it with one hand and you can enlarge the chars if your eyes get tired. It is no so good for technical stuff. I also have newer tolino, which on one side is better as it can handle epub and has a background light, but on the other side has a touchscreen which is not so good.

I currently have about 1600 science fiction books at home plus 500 math books, the latter mostly in my office. As I am nearing retirement, the thought of having to take those 500 books home scares me. So I don't want to fill up my life and my home with even more paper books!

@marmot For science fiction, that is not an issue. Nor for any other kind of fiction, really. For math books, that's different, but if I get a digital one it's always a PDF anyhow. I read those on my iPad, and can make all sorts of notes on them. And still I get to keep the unchanged original! On the other hand, it is much easier to read mathematics on paper.

@Sebastiano texworks is just an editor you want the pdftex log, not any log made by texworks. pdftex will make in the same folder as your document unless your editor moves it somewhere, but if your main file is foo.tex windows search for foo.log it can't be far away.

@ChristianHupfer No, TeX was not pricky, but the file cannot be printed. TeX does not check whether the pdf file is corrupt, but when you try to print the file, you will see that there is something wrong with the graphics.

I wrote the book myself and I learned a lot from all of you. I've been discouraged so many times and I've even cried and I'm not ashamed to write it.

@Sebastiano no fix the warnings, first, it's not impossible that that is the cause of your problem, it's causing duplicated id errors in the generated pdf, and it's trivial to fix, just don't use the same label on different sections.

@marmot I can't say anything about pgf-pie -- I never used it, never looked at the code, but I assume it is about pie-charts, which are pretty common in economics, but are weird from designer's viewpoint...

@Sebastiano The statement on the corrupted pdf is an unverified hypothesis. I feel it is a plausible explanation, but it is not the only explanation.

What is the normal way to define a nested ordered list?

Because if we use the default, then \begin{enumerate}\begin{enumerate}\begin{enumerate}...\end{enumerate}\end{enume‌​rate}\end{enumerate} will produce 1. (a) i. which is not good by you, and which I agree

@manooooh It is actually good typography to use different enumeration schemes in nested lists... Using 1. 2. 3. (next level 1. 2. 3.) ... is confusing, especially when referring to enumeration items

@manooooh You can always use 1.1. or 1.1.1, 1.1.2. This is pretty easy with enumitem for example, a little bit more troublesome by redefining labelenumi etc.

@manooooh In my field, we label the top level (1), the next level a. and the next level if needed (i) or i. To refer to them we would use (in the text) (1) (1a) (1a-i) respectively. This is clean and understandable.

@manooooh Yes, we use parentheses around the labels when we refer to them. As we discussed before, there's no need for the formatting of the list to match the formatting of the reference in the text (other than getting the relevant counters correct).
