7:23 AM
@egreg Thank you, I replaced my 'answer' by your suggestion

1 hour later…
yo'
8:45 AM
@JosephWright @egreg Please, have you got any idea how to implement %05d in l3int? I mean a cs such as \int_use_pad_zeros:Nn \l__my_int { 5 }? I fortunately need only two digits now, so that's one conditional, but still...

@yo' The int module is really focussed on more basic stuff: Bruno has done some work on fp formatting, but that's not been released thus-far

yo'
ok, thanks. As I say, I'll manage (it's dates, so no big deal)

9:31 AM
@yo' for positive integers use \prg_replicate:nn {#2-\tl_count:f{\int_to_arabic:n{#1}}{0}. For negative integers a couple of tests will suffice.

yo'
10:04 AM
@egreg oh clever!

10:31 AM
@yo' Here VVVV
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{xparse}

  \int_compare:nNnTF { #1 } < { 0 }
   { - \__yo_int_use_pad:nn { -#1 } { #2 } }
   { \__yo_int_use_pad:nn { #1 } { #2 } }
 }
\cs_new:Nn \__yo_int_use_pad:nn
 {
  \int_compare:nNnF { \__yo_pad_aux:n { #1 } } > { #2 }
   { \prg_replicate:nn { #2 - \__yo_pad_aux:n { #1 } } { 0 } }
  \int_to_arabic:n { #1 }
 }
\cs_new:Nn \__yo_pad_aux:n { \tl_count:f { \int_to_arabic:n { #1 } } }

@CarLaTeX shouldn't that be sebastianoizing rather? ;-)

@ChristianHupfer In Italian it'd be sebastianizzando I don't know the correct English translation :):):)

@ChristianHupfer, @CarLaTeX: why are we discussing rules about a nonexisting word? :)

@PauloCereda Because we are wacky?

@UlrikeFischer Both Frank and Markus are getting on my nerves on gL.

@CarLaTeX ooh :)
@Johannes_B are the answers posted in German?

10:58 AM
@PauloCereda Yes. And it isn't worth reading tbh.

@Johannes_B Ich bin ein Erpel!
2

@PauloCereda Just trying to get my old Huawei phone running again. I turned it off to load some music on the memory card and switching back on -> bootloop.
@PauloCereda :-)

@Johannes_B oh no
@Johannes_B: you wanted to hear Shakira. :)

@PauloCereda Shakira already was on the card :-p

11:02 AM
@egreg looks like your services failed me again:(
2

@DavidCarlisle This is getting out of control.
@DavidCarlisle Typeset while in a rollercoaster. :)

@PauloCereda too much of that wine in first class rail, I suspect

@DavidCarlisle ooh

@DavidCarlisle In the wacky hit parade, typewriter is the new tickducks

@DavidCarlisle Source?

11:12 AM
@egreg well it's typewriter.sty but since someone was trying to use it on real documents with archaic fonts to add a slight variation I added some flags so you could optionally not do the over-printing and just have one character offset/rotated, but I guess I have interleaved the pdf push/pop of the graphics state with the optional overprinting in an "interesting" way....

@CarLaTeX pretty much. :)
@DavidCarlisle Can we play Occam's razor and blame the user for trying too much? :)

@PauloCereda no the good thing about typewriter is all the test files have a colophon that specifies who to blame

@DavidCarlisle aaah
@DavidCarlisle: should I have one in my thesis?

@PauloCereda definitely, except you can't have a colophon unless there is something before it

@DavidCarlisle oh no

11:18 AM
@DavidCarlisle \begin{document}\title{Catchy title that explains everything}\author{Paulo}\maketitle\vfill Colophon\end{document}

@egreg ooh

@PauloCereda I learned minimalism from musical advice by @AlanMunn.

@egreg :D

It seems I don't understand matrix transformations this morning:-)

@PauloCereda @CarLaTeX We are discussing a non-existing thesis as well, so what? ;-)

11:39 AM
@ChristianHupfer @egreg typewriter.sty using Press Gutenberg font, no overprinting and random rotation turned down to sensible(ish) levels.

@DavidCarlisle Math is hard. Barbie said so, so it must be true.

@Johannes_B I added an answer to get the heat a bit out. Perhaps it helps.

@ChristianHupfer I'm wondering what we'll talk about when @PauloCereda's thesis is finished :):):)

@CarLaTeX that's probably not an event that we ever need to consider.

11:56 AM
@DavidCarlisle oi
@ChristianHupfer you are naughty

12:14 PM
@UlrikeFischer Thank you.

12:29 PM
@DavidCarlisle LOL

@DavidCarlisle Good to know. Otherwise, we could end up like Wile E. Coyote in the cartoon where he has actually caught the road runner and had it for dinner. His life now has no meaning anymore, so he hangs out in bars and drinks himself into oblivion. A terrible fate!
2

12:49 PM
@CarLaTeX @PauloCereda: Ah, you are an utopian ... well, in case you will be right and Paulo will ever finish his 'thesis' we will recall the times like: 'Do you remember the time when we mocked Paulo about his thesis?' ... Those jokes never run out ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Good idea!

1:39 PM
@UlrikeFischer @ChristianHupfer github version of typewriter now produces this (no overprinting and not monospace)

@DavidCarlisle Wow. Now you only need to include some coffee stains and ink bloats and can start a new career as manuscript forger ;-)
5

@UlrikeFischer I leave that sort of silliness to the tikz people

2:08 PM
@DavidCarlisle They would probably add ducks and so spoil the forgery scheme.

@UlrikeFischer Arcs sorted in l3draw, working on more complex curves ...

user image

@UlrikeFischer ^^

@UlrikeFischer, @DavidCarlisle, @egreg On l3draw, I wonder about polar co-ordinates. Following pgf, I've allowed {<angle-1>}{<angle-2>}{ <axis> } and {<angle-1>}{<angle-2>}{ <axis-a> and <axis-b> }, but I wonder if I should go for two forms, one for the 'circle' and one for the 'ellipse' cases.

@JosephWright I'd avoid keywords in the basic layer.

@JosephWright must admit I know nothing about pgf polar coordinates, I'd expect one angle and one length, which doesn't match anything you show there?

2:18 PM
@egreg That's what was passing through my mind
@DavidCarlisle The 'axes' are lengths: for a polar co-ordinate on a circle, you only need one, for a polar co-ordinate on an ellipse you need two

@JosephWright yes I got that but what are angle-1 and angle-2 (I could look at the pgf manual I suppose:-)

@DavidCarlisle Oh, sorry: that's because I'd doing \pgfpatharc, which goes from one angle to a second :)
@DavidCarlisle The basic \pgfpointpolar just has an angle and one or two lengths
@egreg, @DavidCarlisle I think I'll adjust the handling

@JosephWright ah OK that is more understandable

@DavidCarlisle ;-) The colophon for someones thesis @PauloCereda

@egreg, @DavidCarlisle But first I'll check in the arc code: it's taken a while but it now works (just finishing the tests)

2:23 PM
@UlrikeFischer didn't I see mention of luatex supporting colour fonts somewhere? (that was with segui emoji font but comes out black and white

A: How use colored cow fonts with pdflatex?

Ulrike FischerI managed the following. Requirements LuaTeX, Version 1.06.0. The binary I got from w32tex.org, happily I already had a setup to use it without disturbing my normal tex system. A new fontloader: get luatex-fonts-merged-lua from a current context minimals and tell luaotfload to use it as fontl...

@UlrikeFischer ah thanks

@DavidCarlisle ooh
@UlrikeFischer yaaay
@ChristianHupfer you are naughty

@DavidCarlisle When I try `\newcommand\ttbasefont{seguiemj.ttf:mode=node;colr=yes}
` it turns the ducks completly black ;-(. `\font\test={file:\ttbasefont}\test` in itself (without the typewriter package) works fine (I used the github version for the test).

@PauloCereda The Huawei is back working. I had to download a shady firmware image from a cloud in NZ, and update my Linux because no unrar was installed. Would have been a bit more easy if Huawei would provide what is needed for their phones. :-/

2:39 PM
oh

Just noticed, i haven't had anything to eat today.

@UlrikeFischer it may be that the grey scaling in the package is interfering, I'll try in a bit

@DavidCarlisle Grayscale is not completly wrong for a typewriter ;-)

@UlrikeFischer perhaps if the max greylevel is set to 0 I should omit the pdf colour altogether rather than force black
@UlrikeFischer what happens if you delete the lines {'special','pdf: ' .. greynormalb .. ' g'}, and {'special','pdf: 0 g'} (lines 110 and 112)

2:57 PM
No one will typeset their papers like a typewriter. :) /wink wink

@DavidCarlisle still black (I removed also all the other lines with grey didn't change the output).

@UlrikeFischer I wonder if I need more properties set in the virtual font (or its underlying base font) corresponding to mode=node;colr=yes although you would think that that was being copied in at the right place.

@DavidCarlisle Are other properties, e.g. +liga, copied into the virtual fonts?

@UlrikeFischer er, pass. I'm not sure nor do I really know how much you need to copy, if you make a virtual font that does nothing but wrap a real font, whether you need to copy properties from the base to the virtual font or if they will be picked up from the base as needed
@UlrikeFischer the luatex manual isn't exactly clear on such issues

3:23 PM
@PauloCereda Never claimed to be different than naughty ;-)

Q: How to use MiKTeX on MacOS Sierra?

gloschtla You can’t use this version of the application “MiKTeX Console.app” with this version of macOS. You have macOS 10.12.6. The application requires macOS 10.13 or later.

More problems on the horizon. MikTeX for Mac. With binaries in ~/bin/.

@Johannes_B A Linux distribution without unrar by default... hm, Ubuntu? /Shaking Fist at ubuntu ;-)

@DavidCarlisle No not really. But imho it can't be so easy to transport all the lookups etc. Even with the higher level combo fonts they get lost. Btw: On the luatex list there just was a discussion about virtual fonts and Hans wrote that the type=virtual is not really needed (anymore?).

4:05 PM
@AlanMunn No way I'm going to install it! But it allows for a shared install.

@egreg Actually the comment about binaries is a bit wrong. It let's you install a non-admin version in ~/bin.
@egreg Yes, because it will probably clobber the wonderful ability of MacTeX to have multiple switchable years. (Not going to try...)

1 hour later…
5:15 PM
@ChristianHupfer It is a must have tool. Even though I didn't need it since the reinstall half a year ago.

finally! another palindrome!

6:55 PM
@barbarabeeton I need about 70000 points to hope for one. :-(
@barbarabeeton Working on it, though.

@egreg -- i'm having enough trouble getting to 70,000 points. don't complain!

@barbarabeeton ETA: November 14

@egreg Is that because then the last marmot will start hibernation?

7:10 PM
@marmot They'll all be sleeping tight by then.

@egreg Are you aware of global warming?

7:26 PM
I am trying to reproduce the nice looking pseudocode in the document "Tree-Based Algorithms for Computing k-Combinations and k-Compositions", to be found in digitalcommons.unl.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?referer=https://…
I am currently using the algorithmicx package. I am having difficulties getting the caption to look like in the example I provided above

@Kiro I guess you have better chances of getting an answer by asking a question on the main site. This is just a place where humans, ducks and marmots chat.

Guess so

7:46 PM
In case a passing by duck or marmot can help me here: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/415844/…

@egreg I know that you're a mathematician and I am just a marmot, but if I add 739 to your score (OK, probably something ~500 when I finish typing), I get 633,336.
... and you can always adjust your score by downvoting David ;-) (Not that I am suggesting or endorsing that ;-)

8:01 PM
@UlrikeFischer IM poking about a super secret project teaser. :)

8:29 PM
@barbarabeeton Make sure also to take notice at 65536. Powers of 2 are much rarer than palindromes, and hence much more precious.
@marmot Ah, maybe that explains why @LoopSpace got downvoted recently: Someone needed to adjust their rep.

@Johannes_B Usually it should be installed anyway out of the box...

@HaraldHanche-Olsen Please do not suspect me. I only downvoted twice in my life, and certainly would not downvote @LoopSpace. (This is the first time I hear about this.)

@marmot If you need a palindrome etc it is better to unaccept some answers for a short period and thereby faking the rep count ;-) Of course, you should re-accept them later on...
@marmot: I prefer to downvote questions by @egreg and @DavidCarlisle, however ... ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Not sure if that really helps ;-)

@marmot I am pretty sure that @egreg and @DavidCarlisle have additional accounts being used to ask questions in disguise ;-)

8:43 PM
@ChristianHupfer tricky for egreg to use that method

@DavidCarlisle Perhaps @egreg is confused about the typewriter package and will finally post a question: Why was the typewriter package written and who is to blame for it ... ;-)

@marmot I suspect nobody in particular. (Meaning I suspect everybody equally.) You'll find mention of the downvote in yesterday's chat, if you care to search for it.

9:00 PM
@ChristianHupfer Are you David or egreg? And I'm sure that they, i.e. you, are using these accounts to upvote their own answers like crazy and downvote those of the others.

@marmot You got me. I am both of them, i.e. I am both @DavidCarlisle and @egreg. And sometimes I say my laptop is running out of power and sometimes I am writing a thesis (but in 99.9 % of my time I procrastinate... speaking of ducks and other, equally fictitious, animals) ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Yes, that's what I figured. That's why ducks are so popular here. In reality, there is, apart from me, only one user, who is enthusiastic about ducks.

@marmot That's why @ChristianHupfer likes cookies. How else could he have so many SE login sessions alive ;)

@TeXnician Huh?

@TeXnician Why do you speak about yourself in the third person?

9:07 PM
@marmot :)

@TeXnician: My diet consists of Schwarzwälder Schinken, that's enough ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Delicious, but maybe you should try a see-food-diet ("whenever I see food, I have to eat it"). Then you could also eat those cookies which some duck user in this chat room likes to consume.

@TeXnician You are referring to the \phantomthesis user, I assume? ;-)

@ChristianHupfer :)

@TeXnician: How about grilled @marmot in orange sauce? ;-) Very tasty, so they say...

9:17 PM
@ChristianHupfer That may go well, but as you are @DavidCarlisle you probably need some British mint sauce and pineapple.

@TeXnician pineapple only if we're having pizza of course

@DavidCarlisle Ah, so @marmot on pizza would go well with pineapple?

@TeXnician yes sliced up, might make a reasonable ham substitute

Well the above "conversation" in which only one person talks to itself has started to become bizarre.

@marmot Well, I have grown accustomed to the many voices in my head...
@marmot bizarre only in connection with pineapples, for sure

10:15 PM
@marmot Only one? Did you look at my avatar?

@CarLaTeX Whose puppet are you? ;-)

@marmot I'm prof. van Duck's assistant

10:42 PM
@CarLaTeX Meaning you are your own assistant? How convenient, you do not worry to get fired ;-)

@marmot Don't you know prof van Duck? youtube.com/watch?v=V93P7s9ZehY

@CarLaTeX Now you are pretending to be @UlrikeFischer, but in reality you are @ChristianHupfer ? Very confusing?

@marmot while they are good relations between Milan and Mönchengladbach our duck branch is living on its own! chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/42275343#42275343

@UlrikeFischer Yet another confirmation of my above theory. Mönchengladbach is not far from Bielefeld, which is known not to exist.

11:04 PM
@marmot how can Mönchengladbach be not far away from a not existing town?

@UlrikeFischer can it be far away from there?

@UlrikeFischer That's precisely the reason why I think that you also do not exist.
:-) :-)

@marmot As you may know, I have evidence that Bielefeld exists, or at least that sometimes it materializes somewhere. I'm not sure it is where maps place it, because the train cars where I was on arrival and on departure where empty except for me. And I happen to see cars with the BI plate in unexpected places: for instance, the first car I saw entering the town of Zadar.

@egreg Well, this just substantiates more my feeling that none of you exists.

11:21 PM
@marmot I made a video about marmots so I am.

@UlrikeFischer Sounds convincing, but since @egreg is listening I'd prefer a mathematical existence proof. And you need to be fast before @egreg proves the converse. ;-)

@marmot if i don't exist then the video doesn't exist then the marmot doesn't exist then you don't exist then you can doubt that I don't exist so I am.

@UlrikeFischer Nonono, it is all consistent with the assumption that nothing exists.

11:39 PM
@marmot nihilism is boring. We need at least the natural numbers.

@marmot Actually I'm an executive in the Bielefeld conspiracy, but don't tell anybody.

@egreg @UlrikeFischer This is all wonderfully consistent with the hypothesis that none of this exists, even though I must admit it is a bit boring. But wait a minute, I actually enjoyed the marmot movie and the pizza day movie, they were not at all boring, even though they do not exist.
