@cfr I deleted my answer right away when I saw yours, so benedito may not even have seen it.
Meanwhile, elsewhere on the internet: comedywildlifephoto.com/gallery/2016_finalists.php (No ducks though ...)

@JosephWright luatex is actually same as pdftex here but my base tlg are against etex, i'm wondering about switching to use pdftex as base format (in amsmath and other non-base settings) unless you think we can lose that linebreak? I can use \END instead of \end{document} then the test finishes earlier but sometimes it's then harder to check typeset output by eye as the document doesn't finish off properly....
@DavidCarlisle Sounds fine to me
@DavidCarlisle Not like DVI v PDF is important here
@JosephWright trouble is that makes luatex more like the base but xelatex less so (no map file again:-) not sure I'll play around a bit with it (but currently almost all my amsmath tests fail on at least one engine:-)
@DavidCarlisle The map line is awkward
@DavidCarlisle You could simply force a page inside an OMIT block
@JosephWright it's tempting to do
[1{./pdftex.map}] (./tlb-utex-005.aux)
(copy of map file in build dir:-)
10:34
@GideonEbelebe Good day to you too Gideon
@DavidCarlisle Can't you do something like \pdfmapfile{cm.map} in your test files and so suppress the loading of pdfmap.map completly?
@UlrikeFischer Not a bad idea
@UlrikeFischer I was just going to ask if there was a way to preload a map file (I'm sure you must have read a manual or something to know these things....:-)
@UlrikeFischer Oooh, that's a nice tip.
@DavidCarlisle Do we want to consider this more generally? (pdfmap line is a pain.)
10:44
@DavidCarlisle Well I have only one gold tag badge but I got this one for good reasons ... the whole things about map loading is described in the pdftex manual (and the use of modifiers like + and =).
10:57
@JosephWright well we can probably put something to test2e.tex/regression-test.tex to force pre loading common map files?
@JosephWright alternatively keep testing with etex and xetex and for lua it's probably possible to use a callback for the log writing so it doesn't log map files...
for testing: anyone know how to disable font substitution from dvips or similar? I'm trying to help someone that has issues with missing embedded fonts. I apparently does not have the issue on my system
11:14
Quack!
@DavidCarlisle Yes, that would be the sensible place (wouldn't want to make it entirely general)

    \pdfmapfile{pdftex.map}
    \TIMO

@DavidCarlisle Perhaps we could add a 'full fat' version to l3build itself: done properly should be safe

Q: Notation for Lie algebra Actions?

DionHow can I do something like this: This is to denote an action of G on H by means of D. I don't want the arrow to be too long. Thanks.

@DavidCarlisle ^^ picture mode to the rescue
Which package provides the most Helvetica-like fonts for math-mode? I need this for pdflatex, not xelatex.
I already know this page, so if there's no better advice, I'll try to choose from there by subjective judgement: tug.dk/FontCatalogue/sansseriffonts.html
@Szabolcs Maybe newtxsf
13:47
Thanks!
14:15
I learned a new word: portmanteau
@PauloCereda Is portmanteau a portmanteau word?
@egreg oooh that's a good one! I have no idea!
@egreg Enjoying my siunitx v3 checkins?
@JosephWright Didn't look at them. I'll do later: lecture in 15 minutes on l'Hôpital theorem, which I friendly call “the Paris gun”
15:01
@JosephWright could do
@PietvanOostrum at least you got the tick, not egreg, so all is not lost! — David Carlisle 50 secs ago
@egreg ^^
@DavidCarlisle I'll test after work (and see if it allows some simplification in the Lua code) - of course we end up assuming pdftex.map is available, but that is testable and probably nowadays to-be expected
@JosephWright possibly (apart from the two \elses:-) I'd have to remind myself what (u)ptex do here:-)
15:17
Anyone around who could vote to reopen tex.stackexchange.com/questions/339459/… ?
@samcarter just need 1 more now
@DavidCarlisle Thanks a lot!
@DiaaAbidou In case your editor has a search&replace functionality, you just have to use "replace all" twelve times.
@DavidCarlisle Ah, no \pdfoutput at all
@samcarter Me ;-)
@DavidCarlisle Perhaps wait until I've had a go at doing it in the core test set up?
15:33
@JosephWright Thank you, too!
@JosephWright yes
@DavidCarlisle OK, definitely will look at this today
@JosephWright went to a talk on chemical microscopy today (not much chemistry in it though:-)
15:47
@samcarter Thanks, I already did that :)
@JosephWright I saw d44b233 :)
16:06
@DavidCarlisle OK, logic something like 'Is pdfoutput/outputmode defined -> look for pdftex.map -> add map file line'?
@JosephWright sounds right
@egreg :)

@TorbjørnT. Oh, I see. But you were quicker - you should have told me to delete mine! Very sorry.
@cfr Hwyadens like this time of year. :)
16:21
@PauloCereda yes for some reason the humans give them lots of extra food in November to fatten them up...
@cfr Why sorry, it was my choice. Plus, you've expanded your answer beyond what I would have done anyway ...
@paul
@PauloCereda Hello, I am sorry, but is it possible to tell me how to launch the default PDF viewer using arara?
@DavidCarlisle oy
@PauloCereda ?
@DiaaAbidou Hello! There's no official rule for opening the resulting PDF in a viewer, but it might not be so complicated at all. :)
@DavidCarlisle fatten ducks up. :)
16:31
@PauloCereda and?
@DavidCarlisle Well, I think turkeys should be more worried than us. :)
@DavidCarlisle oh no!
16:46
@PauloCereda lots of Czech people around here....
@DavidCarlisle OH NO!

to regression-test.tex seems to be OK (I can also remove the pdftex.map stuff from the Lua script)
@DavidCarlisle A bit more testing before I check in
@JosephWright much simpler than my version:-)
@DavidCarlisle :)
@JosephWright don't you need OMIT/TIMO or does this come somewhere that's already trimmed?
17:18
@DavidCarlisle I wanted to have a check that the file actually exists: in an isolated test system one never knows (although reading the pdfTeX manual it's the default so almost always will)
@DavidCarlisle It's part of the loading of regression-test itself, so has to come before \START
@DavidCarlisle I'll fiddle about a bit and find the simplest safe version :)
@JosephWright oh yes same would have been true of the version in test2e I suppose
@JosephWright after that's in we should probably check in 1.01 versions of any luatex.tlg that are needed (I get a few luatex failures I think, not run it recently)
17:33
@DavidCarlisle -- but remember, @PauloCereda is in the southern hemisphere, so seasons are reversed.
@barbarabeeton ooh
@barbarabeeton but apparently Christmas has global reach.... (or being American you probably had thanksgiving/harvest festival in mind:-)
I always get an error of graphicx package clash when passing draft option to it in case of using LuaLaTeX. Is there any working alternative?
17:52
@DiaaAbidou Example?
@DavidCarlisle Possibly: might bring up at the meeting tomorrow
@DavidCarlisle Speaking of 1.0.1 I've updated my copy from w32tex: seems to have the random number fix
@JosephWright I don't know how say it, but the file compiles flawlessly in case graphicx is loaded as \usepackage{graphicx}. However, when I want to suppress the figures by setting \usepackage[draft]{graphicx}, I got an error of clash. I don't know if my reply is what you need or not.
@DiaaAbidou We need more detail: possibly some package or your class is loading graphicx with another option
@DavidCarlisle Another new callback?
+ - call_edit
@DiaaAbidou If you really need the demo option, use it globally: \documentclass[demo]{article} Or draft.
@JosephWright I haven't asked a question yet, but applying a draft option of \documentclass saved me tentatively. If I asked this question, I would be happy to consider it.
@Johannes_B I am using scrreprt, so demo applies as well?
@DiaaAbidou I misread. No matter if it is demo or draft. If you give it with documentclass, all packages will see it.
18:03
applying draft option for scrreprt gave me this paper layout, is it normal?
@DiaaAbidou Something somewhere will be setting another option if you are getting a clash: it can be tracked down but we need details
@JosephWright I will minimally reproduce it and gave a link to my question here
@Johannes_B FYI, demo option worked well unlike draft for scrreprt
@DiaaAbidou scrlayer-scrpage. Good package, but i find the rulers a bit disturbing. You can turn that of. I think it is the final option for the package, not sure. The documentation will say it.
@JosephWright yes I rebuilt the other day and it looked Ok
@JosephWright looks like it customise the e response presumably ` FATAL1 ("call_edit: `%%d' appears twice in editor command: %s'", edit_value);
18:30
@Johannes_B The output is clean when using demo, so I didn't experiment enough.
@JosephWright oh it's even in the manual: luatex-callbacks.tex:\subsection{\type {call_edit}}
luatex-callbacks.tex:This callback replaces the call to an external editor when \quote{E} is pressed
@PauloCereda I am sorry for asking too much today, but after installing arara from TeXlive manager, it fails to compile the file and gives me this error: "C:\texlive\2016\bin\win32\runscript.tlu:679: command failed with exit code 1: java.exe -jar c:\texlive\2016\texmf-dist\scripts\arara\arara.jar ThesisLuaLaTeX"

However, when I used arara.exe file I downloaded from github, it worked smoothly. Any suggestions for this problem?
@DiaaAbidou It's a shot in the dark, I am afraid. Little is known at the moment. :( I'd need more info, like path priority, environment variables...
@PauloCereda It is OK, better to do it myself than researching it :)
@DiaaAbidou I can help. :) Sadly, I can only blame some sort of path problem, as you have one instance that fails and one that works. :) How does arara from TL behave if you invoke it without any files?
18:44
@PauloCereda It works when calling indent and clean, but fails when calling lualatex as shown in the error
@DiaaAbidou Hm what's the output of -v?
@PauloCereda ops, it is my bad. It seems that setting some directory options for lualatex made evil consequences. I ran plain lualatex/biber without setting options, and they worked nicely. Sorry for my confusion and disturbing you.
19:01
If anyone wants knitted gloves and a toque (hat) my girlfriend is auctioning some off for charity.
I hate it when I forget the name of a package I'm using when trying to look up its manual
chemcompounds? No, that is the outdated one....
chemnum, that is it
or is this just me?
@DiaaAbidou no worries, I am glad the issue was solved. :)
19:18
Does anyone know if there is a proper way of doing approximately symbol with \SIrange?
(\sim)\SIrange{5}{8}{\degree} ?
19:36
@JosephWright:
At the second round of Fedora 25 Final Go/No-Go Meeting, has just been
Fedora 25 Final compose 1.3 declared as GOLD.
GA of this release is planed on Tuesday 2016-November-22.
:)

2 hours later…
21:51
@DavidCarlisle All checked in
@JosephWright thanks I'll give it a whirl, should I copy the stuff to test2e.tex?
@DavidCarlisle I guess so
@DavidCarlisle I've taken out the map normalisation at the Lua end: if we deal with it from TeX it's a lot easier
@JosephWright seems that way
@JosephWright you dropped the testing for pdftex.map?
22:09
@DavidCarlisle Yes: if you know it's before \START you can simplify the Lua
@JosephWright no I meant the tex iffileexists test
@DavidCarlisle Yes: it's required by pdfTeX in PDF mode, really
@JosephWright fine by me, I'm running check in 2e base now...

@PauloCereda Bwrw glaw?
@cfr a lot. :)
23:32
@DavidCarlisle Actually I did ack luatex /usr/local/texlive/2016/texmf-dist/tex/lualatex/luabidi, but this could be too advanced.
@egreg hmph
@egreg I guess we ping Arthur...
I have printed my research paper yesterday. I'm almost done with Chapter Two.
