@Johannes_B -- when i first got involved with the tex project at stanford, i was given a user name "bb" for use @sail. now, the fact that "bb" also meant "bulletin board" at that time never occurred to anyone. but it sure resulted in a lot of very peculiar e-mail.

@yo' We just had a question at AC.SE about signatures on letters of reference. I probably would include a signature, but I do not think it matters. I wouldn't go so far as to digitally sign it, just a scanned image of your signature.

@StrongBad ok, so the same as what I thought of. However, if someone clicks in the PDF file, they'll know that it's not a scanned PDF file, but that's probably fine :-)

@yo' Some European universities and the US government sometimes get touchy about the legality of signatures. In all those cases, they have been very clear about what painful hoops they wanted me to jump through. I wouldn't worry about it.

@barbarabeeton every once in a while we get a PhD application where we need to get the transcript translated. Usually we have someone in the department who can make out the names of the courses and grades.
