12:00 AM
@AlanMunn No, I rather wear a Feud with Fedora ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Well he has enough reputation, but I suspect he's in your timezone and so it's getting somewhat late.

@AlanMunn His name is Florian, so sounds very German/Austrian/Swiss, yes.
Guys, it's late here -- I should sleep. Have a nice time

@ChristianHupfer Yes, that was my guess too.
@ChristianHupfer Good night.

12:13 AM
Ugliest TeX hack I've used I think
It involves the \ch environment and $\cdot$(\sim) 7 MeCN

@ChristianHupfer What distribution?

12:51 AM
Is LyX a frontend to LaTeX?

@crocket `it could be described that way, or perhaps better to say a document editing system that uses latex in the background to typeset.

good
Is it a good idea to use LyX for writing solutions to math problems?

@crocket never used (or seen) it myself, but some seem to like it

or any alternative to LyX

@crocket most tex users use a tex editor that does not hide the markup, such as texworks or use (as I do) genaral text/programming editors such as emacs

12:59 AM
I use emacs with AUCTeX.

@crocket excellent choice:-)

I'm an emacs junkie.
Nowadays, LightTable looks interesting for editing.

1:26 AM
Is there a better reference than tug.org/texinfohtml/latex2e.html ?

@crocket this site?, the latex manual and latex companion books? source2e.pdf ? (that one is probably OK, it's maintained by Karl who maintains texlive, although I haven't looked at it for years)
@crocket the latex book and latex companion books from Addison Wesley are the official reference manuals. source2e.pdf is the documented source code so has the full details (and is free, but not such a light read).

1:52 AM
Huh....
Do I have to pay for the books? Or, can I get them for free?

2:06 AM

@crocket The Addison Wesley books aren't free, as far as I know.

Usually, reference is free.
Does anyone know a free link to LaTeX reference?
I probably want to install doc package.... for offline reading.
I haven't found an authoritative reference for \string

2:37 AM
Where do I find an online comprehensive reference?

3:35 AM

Q: Where do I find an authoritative reference material containing \string, \quad, and so on?

crocketThe best documentation on \string that I found was https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/LaTeX/Plain_TeX#Special_control_sequence_name I searched the following materials, but they didn't explain \string. http://tug.org/texinfohtml/latex2e.html http://ctan.org/ https://tug.org/texlive/Contents/live/doc...

Do I need \usepackage{lmodern} to get high quality fonts with diacritics?

6:46 AM

Q: Is it still useful to load the lmodern package?

pprA few years ago, the lmodern package was a good way to have high quality fonts by simply adding : \usepackage{lmodern} Nowadays, lmodern seems less popular. I'm wondering if it is because LaTeX default fonts received some improvements which make lmodern useless? Or because the package is aband...

7:43 AM
@crocket That chooses the Latin Modern fonts. There are many quality fonts available.

@crocket no, sometimes it is free, not in this case. Odd that you should be happy to pay for a beginners guide but expect the reference to be free, I'd expect it to be the other way round. There is a mass of freely available information though so it's not necessary to buy the books unless you wish to.

@DavidCarlisle A good book is handy, whether or not you have to pay for it. Though some people (e.g. the FSF) don't approve of non-free documentation.

@DavidCarlisle Invite sent to QL
@DavidCarlisle Will adjust Unicode stuff further today
@DavidCarlisle See forwarded mail from KB
@DavidCarlisle I wonder if I should split load-unicode-casing.tex or rename: it does 'letters', 'casing' and sfcode (which I guess is sort-of casing)

10:24 AM
Good maen

@ChristianHupfer Hello

yo'
@egreg Gotta love the accepted answer for the abs(ln(abs(x))) problem

@JosephWright Ah, the Mod-Duck ;-)

yo'
10:40 AM
@egreg victory, the problematic answer was retracted.

@yo' :)
@yo' You can remove your comments, because the answer has been modified.

yo'
1:45 PM
@egreg And retract the downvote :)

2:06 PM
@yo' In the original form it surely deserved one.

2:20 PM
Does anyone here use SublimeText and latexing?

yo'
2:37 PM
@egreg indeed

@JosephWright I know it's sort of fast but it seems wrong to have to read unicodedata.txt multiple times which is presumably what happens if you split it up too much, unless you can set up hooks to capture data then just read it once.. by the way do you know if anything ever came from tex.stackexchange.com/questions/249820/…

2:50 PM
@DavidCarlisle My thoughts too. I'm not sure what Bruno did but I suspect it's best not to go that way here: the gain isn't worth the complexity.
@DavidCarlisle I've currently got the sfcode (punctuation) separate from the casing: that could be combined but perhaps is best done in two (Fast) parts

yo'
@egreg the "tons of rights and lefts" question is beautiful :)

@yo' I'm not sure what the purpose of the notation is.

yo'
3:17 PM
@egreg I smell quantum stuff

@yo' Did you see the straightforward code in my answer? ;-)

@egreg Hello

@EllaJay Hi!

I was trying to find how I may contact you directly
I saw you answered a Q around here, similar to the problem I have
and I saw you are in this chat room so I popped by

@EllaJay This is a good place for meeting.
@EllaJay Fire off!

3:23 PM
My question is on Latex - would I not be disturbing the chatroom if I take over with my prob?

@EllaJay Sometimes we also chat about TeX. ;-)

Ok cool thanks - i will be back in 10 mins - sorry !

yo'
@egreg the problem is, I'm 111% sure the OP does not understand the code.

@yo' I added some explanations

3:39 PM
@e
@egreg my question is similar to tex.stackexchange.com/questions/124340/…
Basically when I try to export my Latex as a PdF I get the error: ! LaTeX Error: Cannot determine size of graphic in

yo'
@EllaJay this means you probably use an unrecognized graphics type for the included file.

@EllaJay Are you using pdflatex or latex+dvips+ps2pdf?

pdflatex. Basically I not understand/know what dvips is - so I dont know what you ment on that Q&A in the link

@EllaJay Can you post a log file?

@EllaJay dvips converts a DVI file to a PS file.
DVI is the output format for LaTeX.

3:50 PM
@FaheemMitha a log file of what? :)

@EllaJay You're linking to the wrong person.

@FaheemMitha wrong reply - sorry - too new, confused and tired. thanks for your help
@JosephWright a log file of what?

@EllaJay From your (pdf)LaTeX run: TeX always creates a .log file, that's where the error message is.

@JosephWright I can't find where the errors log is saved for the life of me - can i copy paste?

@EllaJay Log is in same place as .tex file

3:59 PM
@JosephWright Maybe I found it - how do I post it here please

@EllaJay Are you perhaps using LyX?

@egreg Yes I am

@EllaJay Naughty boy! ;-) What kind of graphic are you trying to include?

@egreg :$ shameful

@EllaJay :)

4:01 PM
@egreg .jpg

@EllaJay Do other JPG files get included?
@EllaJay It may be a fault of the particular file; sometimes the size info gets lost.

@egreg If I understand your question. No, I get a large stack of error messages for all my images - I don't even know how many and if it includes all - my thesis is large. It used to export fine... 3 months ago when I last opened it. Not sure if I am forgetting something or changed somethinge else !
@egreg and what would the solution to that be please?

@EllaJay The best thing is to try with a simple document with just a couple of words and the inclusion of one JPG file.

@egreg .....if it is that the size info is lost

@EllaJay That was just a guess, but if all files don't get included, there must be something else.

4:06 PM
! LaTeX Error: Cannot determine size of graphic in C:/Users/Turbo-X/Desktop/Rec
onstructions/11juneB9ii/XSlice1.jpg (no size specified).

@EllaJay Hmm, can you make the JPG available somewhere?

@egreg for you ? Yes sure
@egreg I need to leave now, Could we continue tomorrow? I will be at my office at 8am - Central EU time, might you be in here again at some point - or how best to reach you? I am very very grateful!

@EllaJay I'll be at home (holiday here), a bit later than 8am. ;-)

@egreg great - thank you!!! and a happy holiday

@EllaJay You can find my email address in the home page listed in my profile tex.stackexchange.com/users/4427/egreg?tab=profile

@JosephWright I'm back:-)

9:15 PM
Hi all
I've got another TikZ question
If I have defined a curve with a complicated shape that is only easy to describe as a whole, but I want to do something special with only part of it (such as make part of it red), how can I do this?
I'd like to have something along the lines of \draw[only between 0.2 and 0.8] "full curve description"
As a concrete example, I'd like to do some special stuff with certain parts of this curve:
\draw (1,1.5) .. controls (1,2.25) and (-1,2.25) .. (-1,2)
.. controls (-1,1.75) and (1,1.75) .. (1,2.5)
.. controls (1,3.25) and (-1,3.25) .. (-1,3)
.. controls (-1,2.75) and (1,2.75) .. (1,3.5);

@Danu you can use the question site you know.... tikz supports clipping as far as i know so you can draw the whol e thing but clip to a specified rectangle

@DavidCarlisle I always feel like my questions are way too localized to be very useful.
@DavidCarlisle Hmm, okay, that seems like a step in the right direction; However, I'd like to draw part of the curve in this style: [(-),thick,red]: Will the end markings still be put on?

@Danu but code formatting in chat is (by design) very limited and it means that you are just asking questions of the one (in this case) other person in the room, rather than having it float on the site to be picked up when anyone has the time to answer

@DavidCarlisle Okay, I guess I will post a question on the site.

@Danu Apart from runing example programs for answers on site I have never used tikz:-)

9:33 PM
Now, we pray ;D

@Danu you've far more chance of someone who knows about tikz seeing it there:-)
@Danu of course it would be 1000000 times better and easier to answer if you fixed the example to be a complete document.

@DavidCarlisle It would? Okay...
Done.

@Danu according to my profile I've 5,730 answers, think how long it takes to write \documentclass that many times and (longer to) guess all the packages required to make each fragment work....
@Danu thanks

@DavidCarlisle I agree that I should've immediately included a MWE... Although I suspect you've got some ready-made test.tex file ;)

9:51 PM
@Danu it's guessing the packages that's hard especially (as I noticed egreg guessed today) fragment works for everyone who tries it unless you happen to know it breaks for \usepackage[czech]{babel} when the OP hadn't mentioned that any language package was involved. If I'm feeling tired I simply don't bother trying questions without a MWE.

@DavidCarlisle Fair enough!

@Danu but in this case it doesn't help as I know nothing:-)

yo'
@DavidCarlisle Oh yes, the popular Czech Babel, breaking TikZ and \crule since ever :-)

@yo' you should fix it as the representative of all things czech here!

yo'
@DavidCarlisle I'm open to this, but I'm not sure whether Javier is ;-)
When does Winter Bash start? Just so that I know when I can opt out... Or has it started already and the opt out from last year still works? :D

10:03 PM
@yo' I guess based on the meta votes @StefanKottwitz better ask for the site to be 'in' (I didn't get the mail)

yo'
@JosephWright yep I know, that's why I ask :-) The thing is, I like hats, but I find the SE WB neither amusing nor interesting.

@yo' Much the same here

11:00 PM
@JosephWright And here.
Badge hunters and rep collectors get new goals - hats.

11:32 PM
@yo' WB?

Greetings

After finishing the toc, how do you specify a section where you wanna start writing something? For instance, say you wanna begin writing in chapter X, section A.
Perhaps I did something wrong since I got new text added to the table of contents.
