@yo' Time to file a document bug?

yo'
@FaheemMitha no. Time to again complain that the examples in the manual don't have a list of necessary libraries. Especially since the PGF error messages are broken (wrong expansion), it's difficult to guess which library is needed for some functionalities.

Hi. In LyX, when I am citing a source, say source number 8, should I just insert [8] or is there a better way to do this? I've seen something differently done on LaTeX, but I don't recall.

Hi all, I have a question about submitting to a journal. I am using AMS (amsart) document class as they request, but when I use this mode and make a pdf my documents don't look like the ones in the journal (unless I add a bunch of new codes). Is this normal?

4:44 AM
@Sean Allred I’d probably write an answer but this judgemental site claims I’m a robot and won’t let me disprove that by means of a captcha. That issue persists for half a year or so now and I’m not interested in wasting any more time on it. — phg 6 hours ago
@JosephWright Any ideas on how to move forward with the above?

7:23 AM
@PauloCereda It's weird, but I have some rep looses due to "voting corrected" what do you think about that? :-P

7:42 AM
@TheSubstitute It's not that unusual. Journals often don't use tex at all internally (or use a different class, with proprietary fonts) all they want is source with known markup they can put into their conversion system.

8:53 AM
@RomainPicot I know, but that was to claim the title of “most vote-corrected user in StackExchange”

9:32 AM
@RomainPicot Welcome to my world. :) Sorry about that. :)

9:49 AM
@PauloCereda Don't worry, I won 7 Bronze badges and 1 silver thank your serial upvote :-P

@RomainPicot The Voting Squad!
/plays awesome cue music

!!/song

@RomainPicot Psmith is disabled now. :)

@PauloCereda of course :-) . By the way when vote are reversed you can upvote them a new time or not? (it's not a question to ask the voting squad for some upvote! It's only for information)
@PauloCereda So I can't know what is the awsome music :-P

@RomainPicot ooh we should definitely test that hypothesis! :)
Have fun. :P

9:54 AM
@PauloCereda just look at it for one answer no need to trigger the script a new time ;-)

@RomainPicot :)

@PauloCereda It's sounds like "le poussin piou" in french (can't link youtube video with this computer you'll have to find it :-P)

@PauloCereda Basically There was an old lady who swallowed a fly but with sound effects :-)

@RomainPicot ooh
@JosephWright LOL

@PauloCereda :-)

yo'
11:00 AM
@RomainPicot In Paris for 1 day.

@yo' today?

yo'
@RomainPicot yes. Trying to finally get myself registered for the 4th year of PhD studies

@yo' if you are in Paris this evening we can meet with some beer(s) ;-)

yo'
@RomainPicot possibly. But at this moment, I need to find the form I have to fill it. The lady one floor up said it's "hidden there" but she wasn't willing to simply mail it to me
found it!

@yo' I know this kind of person :/

yo'
11:16 AM
@RomainPicot I may go for a beer with a Czech friend, but I'll keep you posted, we can go all together :)

11:38 AM
In case people here are interested, I just put in a community ad for a Mathematica package that integrates with LaTeX
(Note about the size: it's only for the sake of retina screens)

@Szabolcs ooh I upvoted it
MaTeX :)

@Szabolcs I'm not a Mathematica user, but it seems impressive!

11:57 AM
@egreg You scared me for a minute, I thought I read I am not a LaTeX user... :)

yo'
@DavidCarlisle Is there any way how to make rich black with xcolor? It doesn't seem to be discussed in the manuall
@PauloCereda @egreg is not wipet, I know they both are 5-letter squares, but one is green and one is violet

@yo' ooh. :)

yo'
btw, I've got a 2nd offer for a LaTeX position recently (this one would be part-time).

@yo' How nice, Tom!

@yo' What's “rich black”?

yo'
12:04 PM
@Szabolcs How have you created the italic text Mathematica in the ad? It seems like it's math-mode... :-(
@egreg the CMYK code is (1 1 1 1), for poor black it's (0 0 0 1) (of course, this expects the CMYK color coding...)

@yo' \definecolor{richblack}{cmyk}{1,1,1,1}

yo'
@egreg I'd bet I've tried this, but probably I also messed with the cmyk option to the package. Thanks!

A quick guide to LaTeX -- great cheat sheet from @divbyzero :) https://www.overleaf.com/read/fghqpfgnxggz#.VlWevyGfms5.twitter

Will OL offer arara support someday?

yo'
@PauloCereda who knows?
Will there ever be a simple way how to control the black mode in colorspace conversion? ... ImageMagick sucks at it; GIMP does not support CMYK at all :-(

12:14 PM
@yo' Royalties royalties royalties ooooh I will buy hundreds of ducks, ooh maybe thousands! AN ENTIRE POPULATION OF DUCKS YAAAY

@yo' I'm not sure I'll be able to come (lot of work to do). So if you are already with someone, we could meet another time when I'll have more time

yo'
1:02 PM
@RomainPicot ok, that's fine with me

yo'
1:13 PM
at least one success today!

@yo' registered?

@yo' yay!

yo'
@RomainPicot no. Succesfully converted a BW picture to rich black CMYK

@yo' It will be a surprise if you are able to register in some hours :-P

1:36 PM
Hi all, I'm back again!

yo'
@RomainPicot seems I have all I need: I wrote a letter, my supervisor will write a letter, then I only need a signature from a colleague in our labo. Then the officer will get the presiident's signature herself...

Is there an easy way to make the dashes on a dashed line smaller in TikZ?
I'm trying to draw some very short lines in dashed/dotted fashion...

yo'
@Danu it's somewhere in the manual, lemme find it
@Danu The key densely dashed is available. Or dash pattern for detailed tweaks, see §15.3.2 of the manual.

@yo' It's as in my university, you need lot of papers for only one signature...

yo'
@RomainPicot yep, and some ridiculous things, like "the photocopy of the carte d'etudiant"

1:39 PM
@DavidCarlisle -- disagree about tabbing. it's complicated to use correctly, yes, but it permits structures that are better behaved than tabular and actually easier to manage. i've used it a number of times to tidy up lists of notation. if interested, i'll dig up an example and send it by email.

yo'
@egreg Seems that there're still problems with the rich black :-(

@yo' what manual?

@yo' When I register, they ask a letter from me and my supervisor and at the end they said to me: "no need of this why did you bring them?"...

The PGF manual?

yo'
@Danu yes.
@RomainPicot well, a lot of things in France are important, for one very good reason: TO BE PUT IN A FOLDER!!!
2

1:43 PM
@yo' But no one knows where the folder is !

yo'
@RomainPicot so true! :D (one extra reason why I try to have every single paper electronically)

@yo' You should write TO BE PUT IN A FOLDER !!! :)
^^ mind the space! :)

yo'
@PauloCereda LOL!!!, pardon : LOL ! ! !

@yo' <3

@yo' Even if you have them electronically they can be refused (nothing is more important than paper ;-) )

yo'
1:45 PM
@RomainPicot yep, but if you insist that it's the original that was by some strange coincidence with you instead of with them, they can't know ;-)

@yo' of course ;-)

2 hours later…
3:34 PM
Good maen
Is anybody able to call his/her own profile page?

@ChristianHupfer The bee duck is accessible. :)

@PauloCereda I can access it by using 'Users', but not by clicking on my avatar in the right upper corner... Strange
What is the mM unit? — Bernard 15 hours ago
@JosephWright and @clemens: Do you know a mM unit in Chemistry? Milli mole?
@PauloCereda Any serial upvotings so far? ;-)

@barbarabeeton it's possible that it has some uses but stealing all the accent commands because they are never used much means it invades almost the entire latex source code, it's been the source of multiple bugs in 2.09 (especially) and 2e.

3:58 PM
@ChristianHupfer @RomainPicot suffered a little. :)

@PauloCereda That's ok -- he proposed \vspace{-something} yesterday ;-)

4:16 PM
@ChristianHupfer millimolar
@ChristianHupfer Not an SI unit but commonly used: 1 mM = 1 mmol dm^{-3}

@JosephWright Ah, for a solvent?

@ChristianHupfer Solute in a solvent :-)

@JosephWright Thanks -- my lectures in Chemistry are fading away ... I think way back in 1998 :D

@PauloCereda As the resident Lua expert, when you have a chance could you read over github.com/josephwright/unicode-data? I might yet adjust the output a bit but the basics should all be in place
@DavidCarlisle Or perhaps you might :-)

@JosephWright Ok will look this evening:-)

4:28 PM
@ChristianHupfer milli molar, i.e., milli mole per liter

4:44 PM
@JosephWright I will look as well. :)

5:32 PM
@JosephWright (or anyone else who knows Miktex (@UlrikeFischer :-) what's fmtutil-sys in miktex ? vvvv
@Meferdati That log file shows LaTeX2e <2015/01/01> there have been 5 latex releases since then 2015/0/01 patch levels 1 and 2, then 2015/10/01 and patch levels 1 and 2 of that. I don't know in miktex how to force teh formats to rebuild but I'll ask in chat..... — David Carlisle 1 min ago

@DavidCarlisle I'd do it from the Maintenance entry MiKTeX part of the Start Menu: there's a 'Rebuild formats' button

@egreg I'm sure you use miktex all the time ^^^^
@JosephWright don't tell me, tell the OP :-) (also how come again we are seeing an install stck at 2015/01/01, previously it's usually been mactex....)

@DavidCarlisle There are buttons in miktex settings (update formats). On the command line initexmf --admin --dump or ``initexmf --dump` if user formats exist.

@UlrikeFischer isn't an update supposed to rebuild the formats if latex changes, or is that not automatic?

@DavidCarlisle I always try running it, but it doesn't work: can it be a bug in TeX?

5:36 PM
@egreg probably, you should ask for a cheque

@DavidCarlisle Depends a bit. Multiuser setups can mix up admin and non-admin mode. If there are user formats they are not updated when the admin update manager is run. It is the same confusion texlive user ran into if they used updmap once. tex.stackexchange.com/questions/108447/…
Also sometimes miktex simply fails (but not so often) and forgets the formats.
And at last you can exclude some formats in miktex settings ...

6:18 PM
@UlrikeFischer thanks, you got the OP on the right track and a green tick for me:-)

@DavidCarlisle Glad to be of service ;-). Btw: Did I pushed and popped the catcode table as intended here: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/279922/…. The documentation of luatexbase is a bit short of examples.

6:50 PM
@UlrikeFischer yes although you might want to add \usepackage{luatexbase} as luaotfload just accepted my patch not to load luatexbase and just use the built in (from 2015/10/01) ltluatex, so catcode table stuff wouldn't be there by default once that rolls out

7:11 PM
@DavidCarlisle -- okay, i wasn't thinking about that aspect. guess i've just been lucky that i've never needed to use accents while using tabbing. agreed that's a really bad design flaw.

7:33 PM
@DavidCarlisle PL3?

@yo' Thanks for the note! I'll fix it tomorrow. That was not made with LaTeX, just with Latin Modern Roman OpenType fonts. I should create it with LaTeX instead!

@JosephWright guess so:(
@barbarabeeton but it affects the whole format, every minipage, every page heading has to reset the definition of \= etc to be an accent just in case a page has broken mid tabbing,
@JosephWright any thoughts on which fix to use?

7:49 PM
@David: do you have a name for a tool?

@PauloCereda "spade"

@DavidCarlisle I think your version is a bit more natural

@DavidCarlisle cool. :) And I saw what you did there. :)

@PauloCereda trebuchet

@JosephWright Tried something for UK-TUG FAQ, but it seems I will need to resort to a bigger cannon. :)
@JosephWright ooh

7:51 PM
@PauloCereda I've been playing a bit with that....

@PauloCereda kugelrohr

@DavidCarlisle -- i realize this is probably heresy, but is it possible to reimplement tabbing with other markers (not accent codes)? things i find superior in tabbing over tabular include (1) fewer restrictions on page breaking, (2) the ability to easily specify ragged right in a paragraphed element (using \parbox{...}[t] to keep good baselines) in any column, and (3) the ability to define a multi-argument command to fill in a row easily. (cont'd)

@DavidCarlisle ah cool, I tried to convert the .tex files to other formats using existing tools, but I think I will write my own converter. It looks more adeherent. :)
@JosephWright ooh tell me you have one of these in your lab!

(cont'd) perhaps these are easy to implement in some variation of tabular, but i haven't managed to put them all together. maybe i just haven't looked hard enough.

@David: it is either that or writing the FAQ in Markdown or AsciiDoc then convert to .tex. :)

7:53 PM
@barbarabeeton well yes you could just give sensible names for \nexttab etc, but the damage is done unless you make a breaking change and remove the redefinitions of \= etc then every other part of latex has to be aware of that even if tabbing has alternative names
@PauloCereda give me an hour and I'll send some mail...

@DavidCarlisle Sure! I was writing one, but it seems you are more advanced on this matter than I. :) I can help.

@PauloCereda Yes, cost about £2500

I CANNOT MAKE EL CAPITAN DISPLAY MY TURKEY!
Friends, I was trying to add an answer to the turkey thread with this unicode symbol for a turkey: 🦃. It seems available in Unicode 8.0 and there's this font named Apple Color Emoji which seems to hold this glyph. I tried to come up with a XeLaTeX document but it does not show my turkey!
\documentclass{article}

\usepackage{fontspec}
\newfontfamily\myemoji{Apple Color Emoji}

\newcommand{\turkey}{\myemoji 🦃}

\begin{document}

\Huge\turkey

\end{document}
For the Unicode experts, U+1F983. :)
@egreg, @David: would you guys like to save my turkey? :)

@PauloCereda It's not a real font

@egreg o.O
@egreg but... but... my turkey...
:)

@PauloCereda There should be something on the site. I'm watching the match.

@egreg No worries. :) I will post a question later, it might be a fun thread. :) I have my mass now.

9:27 PM
@PauloCereda On windows the emoji font don't have the symbol, but I can offer some alternatives.
\documentclass{article}

\usepackage{fontspec, xcolor}
\newfontfamily\myemoji{Segoe UI Emoji}
\begin{document}
\Huge\color{red}\myemoji ^^^^^1f423 ^^^^^1f424 ^^^^^1f409
\end{document}

Q: Emoji Characters

lemenI'm trying to display Emoji Characters inside my XeLaTeX Document. It seems to work for some glyphs like the numbers and pound sign but not for all. Here is a MWE: \documentclass{scrartcl} \usepackage{fontspec} \setmainfont{Apple Color Emoji} % The emoji Font \begin{document} \char"0030{} %...

@PauloCereda @StefanKottwitz @JosephWright had a play at making some uktug faq html davidcarlisle.github.io/uk-tex-faq (the convertor (in lua) is checked in to the master branch)
