@FaheemMitha no. Time to again complain that the examples in the manual don't have a list of necessary libraries. Especially since the PGF error messages are broken (wrong expansion), it's difficult to guess which library is needed for some functionalities.

Hi. In LyX, when I am citing a source, say source number 8, should I just insert [8] or is there a better way to do this? I've seen something differently done on LaTeX, but I don't recall.

Hi all, I have a question about submitting to a journal. I am using AMS (amsart) document class as they request, but when I use this mode and make a pdf my documents don't look like the ones in the journal (unless I add a bunch of new codes). Is this normal?

@TheSubstitute It's not that unusual. Journals often don't use tex at all internally (or use a different class, with proprietary fonts) all they want is source with known markup they can put into their conversion system.

@Szabolcs How have you created the italic text Mathematica in the ad? It seems like it's math-mode... :-(

@egreg the CMYK code is (1 1 1 1), for poor black it's (0 0 0 1) (of course, this expects the CMYK color coding...)

Hi all, I'm back again!

@RomainPicot seems I have all I need: I wrote a letter, my supervisor will write a letter, then I only need a signature from a colleague in our labo. Then the officer will get the presiident's signature herself...

Is there an easy way to make the dashes on a dashed line smaller in TikZ?

I'm trying to draw some very short lines in dashed/dotted fashion...

@Danu The key densely dashed is available. Or dash pattern for detailed tweaks, see §15.3.2 of the manual.

@DavidCarlisle -- disagree about tabbing. it's complicated to use correctly, yes, but it permits structures that are better behaved than tabular and actually easier to manage. i've used it a number of times to tidy up lists of notation. if interested, i'll dig up an example and send it by email.

@egreg Seems that there're still problems with the rich black :-(

@barbarabeeton it's possible that it has some uses but stealing all the accent commands because they are never used much means it invades almost the entire latex source code, it's been the source of multiple bugs in 2.09 (especially) and 2e.

@Meferdati That log file shows LaTeX2e <2015/01/01> there have been 5 latex releases since then 2015/0/01 patch levels 1 and 2, then 2015/10/01 and patch levels 1 and 2 of that. I don't know in miktex how to force teh formats to rebuild but I'll ask in chat..... — David Carlisle 1 min ago

@DavidCarlisle There are buttons in miktex settings (update formats). On the command line initexmf --admin --dump or ``initexmf --dump` if user formats exist.

@UlrikeFischer isn't an update supposed to rebuild the formats if latex changes, or is that not automatic?

@DavidCarlisle I always try running it, but it doesn't work: can it be a bug in TeX?

@DavidCarlisle Depends a bit. Multiuser setups can mix up admin and non-admin mode. If there are user formats they are not updated when the admin update manager is run. It is the same confusion texlive user ran into if they used updmap once. tex.stackexchange.com/questions/108447/…

Also sometimes miktex simply fails (but not so often) and forgets the formats.

And at last you can exclude some formats in miktex settings ...

@UlrikeFischer yes although you might want to add \usepackage{luatexbase} as luaotfload just accepted my patch not to load luatexbase and just use the built in (from 2015/10/01) ltluatex, so catcode table stuff wouldn't be there by default once that rolls out

@yo' Thanks for the note! I'll fix it tomorrow. That was not made with LaTeX, just with Latin Modern Roman OpenType fonts. I should create it with LaTeX instead!

@DavidCarlisle -- i realize this is probably heresy, but is it possible to reimplement tabbing with other markers (not accent codes)? things i find superior in tabbing over tabular include (1) fewer restrictions on page breaking, (2) the ability to easily specify ragged right in a paragraphed element (using \parbox{...}[t] to keep good baselines) in any column, and (3) the ability to define a multi-argument command to fill in a row easily. (cont'd)

@DavidCarlisle ah cool, I tried to convert the .tex files to other formats using existing tools, but I think I will write my own converter. It looks more adeherent. :)

@barbarabeeton well yes you could just give sensible names for \nexttab etc, but the damage is done unless you make a breaking change and remove the redefinitions of \= etc then every other part of latex has to be aware of that even if tabbing has alternative names

I CANNOT MAKE EL CAPITAN DISPLAY MY TURKEY!

Friends, I was trying to add an answer to the turkey thread with this unicode symbol for a turkey: 🦃. It seems available in Unicode 8.0 and there's this font named Apple Color Emoji which seems to hold this glyph. I tried to come up with a XeLaTeX document but it does not show my turkey!
