any one can see what silly error I am making here? I do not think it is worth posting question on this. But I have been starring at this for 20 minutes and do not see my error

\documentclass[crop,tikz]{standalone}
\usepackage{amsmath}
\usepackage{forest}
\useforestlibrary{edges}
\begin{document}

\begin{forest}
[
  {\begin{align*}
      x&=1
  \end{align*}}
]
\end{forest}
\end{document}
Compiling gives  (/usr/local/texlive/2022/texmf-dist/tex/latex/latexconfig/epstopdf-sys.cfg))
! Missing \endgroup inserted.
<inserted text>
\endgroup
l.13 \end{forest}

if I remove align environment and change it with normal math {$x=1$} then the error goes away.
If you think I should post this as question, I can do this. But I am sure I am making some silly syntax error but do not see what it is.

Will ask about this on main site. can't figure it out.

@Nasser Just a guess without running: Does $\begin{aligned} x & = 1 \end{aligned}$ work?

6:44 AM
@mickep yes!!

\documentclass[crop,tikz]{standalone}
\usepackage{amsmath}

\usepackage{forest}
\useforestlibrary{edges}
\begin{document}

\begin{forest}
[
  {$\begin{aligned}
      x &= 1
  \end{aligned}$}
]
\end{forest}
\end{document}

@Nasser OK, good.

7:30 AM
@mickep you can answer all the latex math questions, and I'll do context.

@DavidCarlisle Good exercise for both of us. But I let you answer the LaTeX ones as well, you need the points better than I do. :)

1 hour later…
8:38 AM
@mickep not even a bronze badge ^ I should aim for gold:-)

9:05 AM
@DavidCarlisle You will get that before me... 🤷🏻‍♂️

3 hours later…
12:26 PM
@DavidCarlisle You are not following your rules...

@mickep I only added tex primitives, it's conceptually a context answer

@DavidCarlisle Oh no...

\starttext

$[0,1\mathclose[ \cong
  [a,b\mathclose[ \hskip5ex
  \mathopen]0,1] \cong
  \mathopen]a,b] \hskip5ex
  \mathopen]0,1\mathclose[ \cong
  \mathopen]a,b\mathclose[$

\stoptext
@mickep ^

12:55 PM
@DavidCarlisle Yes, but that is not the way to do it. :P

1:07 PM
(Isn't the latex way to define (via mathtools) a paired delimiter to use for the intervals?)

1:39 PM
@mickep yes but I wanted to show why the spacing was as it was, not just a high level command that avoids the problem. but you are in charge of latex math answers

1 hour later…
2:46 PM
@mickep -- There's such a thing as hiding too much. It's extremely useful to understand the open/close principle, but, like many other things, Latex hides it, which can lead to confusion.

3:10 PM
@barbarabeeton Well, I agree completely with David's first part, but in the end I think the user is better of using the package solution, that really takes care of it and that makes input more natural.

@mickep yes I should add a note to the answer probably

@DavidCarlisle Well, not for my sake. Also, now you can show off here with your new toy. :)

@mickep closed before I had chance

@DavidCarlisle Oh, the question that it became duplicate of really shows off some rather horrible notation.

4 hours later…
7:03 PM
So, Typst hour in half an hour...

@mickep ER, no, started half an hour ago
@mickep Except apparently no live demo due to server issues, so just discussion of the public info

Ohh
The topic of the mail said "Thu 23 Mar: TeX Hour: Typst and Unlatex: 7:30pm GMT"
