with bibtex the citation style is chosen at bibliography creation time for named style the generated list looks like `\bibitem[{Ashburner and Friston(2005)}{Ashburner2005}` where the optional argument is used in the list display and by `\cite` for a numeric style the generated list looks like `\bibitem{abdelaziz2010distribution}
{\sc Abdelaziz, A.~Y., Mohamed, F., Mekhamer, S., and Badr, M.}
\newblock Di` so `\bibitem` has no optional argument so produces `[2]` or whatever and there is no information about title and author (unless you can read the text which latex can not do)
